I keep seeing people say the volume controls handle this, but that hasn’t matched my experience at all. On mine, tapping the volume down button stops around the second or third step and then just sits there. It never actually reaches silence no matter how many times I press it. I’ve tried holding it down too and nothing changes. So for me there’s no real mute option through the buttons, and I don’t see any dedicated mute switch anywhere on the casing either. Maybe there’s a setting buried somewhere I haven’t found, but out of the box it just doesn’t go quiet. I usually end up just pulling my headphones out of the jack when I need it silent, which is a bit clunky but gets the job done. Curious if anyone else has run into the volume floor thing or if it’s just my unit.

I tried the translation mode on a show once and it was rough. Dialogue moves way faster than a normal conversation, so it kept clipping sentences and lagging behind. Fine for a slow documentary maybe, but for movies I’d rather just read the subtitles.

I’ve had mine since spring and there’s no monthly thing attached. The app did nag me to sign in once but nothing about paying again.

I went through this same thing last summer and I’ll be straight with you, I wouldn’t buy one unless the listing photos clearly show the case sitting next to the camera. Mine came from a page that only showed the camera and a couple mounts, and there was no case anywhere in that box. I ended up ordering one after the fact and it cost me almost a third of what I paid for the camera itself, which honestly annoyed me more than it probably should have. My sister bought hers a month later from a seller who had the case right in the main photo and hers showed up with it, same camera and everything. So it really does seem to come down to which listing you click on rather than anything consistent. If snorkeling is your whole reason for getting it, I’d just find a listing that pictures the case before you hand over any money.

in reply to: SawShark vs old file guide, anyone compared? #10973

I switched to the SawShark about a year ago and the biggest difference for me wasn’t so much the angle itself, it was that I actually bother to sharpen now. Sounds silly but with the old file guide I’d put it off because it felt like a chore, and then I’d end up running a dull chain way longer than I should have. With the SawShark I can just do a few passes whenever I notice the chain getting a bit slow, and it’s done in a couple minutes without me dreading it.

The consistency part is real though. I never had a problem getting a sharp tooth with the basic guide, my issue was that by the time I got to the end of the chain my angles had drifted a bit from where I started. Nothing dramatic but you could feel it in the cut. The SawShark keeps me honest on that front because I’m not relying on my own hand staying steady for twenty-something teeth in a row.

That said, it’s not like my old guide was garbage. I got years out of it and the chains still cut fine. If you’re already getting good results and you don’t mind the fiddling, there’s no urgent reason to rush out and buy one. For me it was more about the whole thing feeling less annoying, which meant I stayed on top of maintenance instead of letting it slide. That alone made it worth it.

How often are you sharpening these days anyway? If it’s only a couple times a season you might not notice as much of a difference as someone like me who’s out there most weekends.

Thanks for all the replies, good to know it’s not as fiddly as I was worried about. I might give it a go this weekend when I’ve got a bit of time. If it turns into a mess I’ll just start over, no big deal.

I actually went the other way and stopped keeping mine in my main wallet. Not because of signal, that part was always fine even squished in there. It was more that I got tired of digging it out every time I wanted to charge it, and my wallet was already stuffed. So now it lives in a little card holder I use for travel stuff and it’s been way less annoying. The thickness thing is real though, it does add a bit even if it doesn’t look like much on paper. If your wallet is already tight I’d honestly think about where else you could put it. Passport holder worked great for me.

I actually noticed the shadows looking better after I switched my card to a faster one, which sounds weird but that’s what happened. Maybe it was just the lighting that day, but the dark patches under trees weren’t as crushed on that ride. Could be worth trying if you have a spare card lying around.

I move around a ton too and mine has been fine for the last four months or so. I wake up on my back, side, whatever, and it just kind of works for me. Maybe I’m not as picky as some folks on here, but I don’t feel like I’m fighting it.

Mine actually stuck fine on a rounded case, though I did wipe it down first since those little cases get greasy in a pocket. It’s been on about two months now and hasn’t peeled at all. The size wasn’t an issue for me, it’s a small sticker.

in reply to: AerioQ wall mount okay for a room that gets afternoon sun? #10081

I had the same concern before getting mine, but honestly the sun hasn’t been an issue. The room still gets warm near the window, but the rest of it stays comfortable enough that I don’t dread going in there anymore. I just point the airflow toward where I’m sitting and it does the job.

in reply to: TrimZa for someone with shaky hands? #9975

I think the people saying it’s not magic are right, but I’d also say it’s one of those things where you kind of have to try it to see how your dad handles it. My husband has a bit of a tremor and regular clippers are a no go in our house. He’s cut himself too many times to count. We got the TrimZa mostly for that reason, not because I thought it would fix the shaky hands issue entirely.

What I noticed is that the way you hold it makes a difference. It’s not like you’re trying to pinch something small and precise. You’re just pressing a button and moving it along the nail. That bigger grip and the fact you don’t have to squeeze hard seems to help him a lot. He still needs to rest his elbow on the table sometimes, but he can do it on his own. That alone was a win for us. I’d say it’s worth trying, but just know it might take a couple of tries to get the hang of the angle.

in reply to: CoolCove vs my old space heater, is the heat similar? #9842
    Susan Keller

I’m probably in the minority here but I actually switched from an oil radiator to the CoolCove and never looked back. The radiator heat felt nice and heavy but it took so long to get going that I’d just sit there shivering through the first hour. This thing gets warm fast, and yeah it’s more directional, but for sitting at my desk that’s exactly what I want. I don’t miss waiting around for that old thing at all.

in reply to: Wood Ranger Power Leaf Blower okay for cleaning out a garage? #9460

I think it really depends on how messy your garage gets. Mine is mostly just dust and the occasional stray leaf that blows in, and it handles that fine. But if you’re trying to clear out a bunch of heavier stuff like dirt clumps or wood shavings after a project, you might find yourself going over the same spot a few times.

I actually like that it doesn’t have a timer, I just plug it in when I need it and forget about it.

I’m going to be the odd one out here. I had mine in the bedroom for a couple of nights and ended up moving it to the living room. The fan itself is fine, but there was a low hum that just got under my skin no matter what. I couldn’t tune it out.

in reply to: SleepZee for side sleepers, anyone tried it? #8832

I’m a side sleeper too and honestly mine ended up being more of a hassle than anything. It stayed in place fine, but I couldn’t get comfortable with it no matter how I adjusted the mold. I think I just prefer something less bulky when I’m on my side. Hope it works out better for you if you decide to try it.

in reply to: does the Hewelth UVClean work with tap water or only bottled? #8764

I think you’re overcomplicating it a bit. The UV part is just doing its own thing inside the bottle, it doesn’t know or care where the water came from. I’ve filled mine from all sorts of places, random fountains at the park, the weird sink at my gym, whatever, and it still does the job.

in reply to: CarbonOne Safe vs old detector: is the beep pattern different? #8279

I actually think the old beep was better for the kind of alarm I need. The short chirps on the CarbonOne blend in with my microwave and other kitchen sounds, so I’ve almost missed it a couple of times. The continuous loud one was annoying but at least it got my attention instantly. Maybe mine is just quieter than yours, but I wouldn’t mind a louder pattern.

I still get a week or more out of mine and I’ve had it since last winter. I do keep the heat off most of the time though, so that might be why mine hasn’t dropped off as much.

in reply to: Heater Pro X vs. my old plug-in radiator, any real difference? #8035
    Susan Keller
    Member

I moved from a big oil filled radiator to one of these plug in ceramic heaters last winter and honestly the biggest difference for me wasnt the heat itself, it was how I used it. With the radiator I would set it in the corner and basically treat it like a mini furnace for the whole room. This one I kind of learned to keep near me instead. If I’m at my desk it sits on the floor next to my chair and I feel it right away. If I’m on the couch I move it over by my feet. It’s more like wearing a warm blanket than heating the space, if that makes sense.

I do miss the way the radiator would keep the room warm after it clicked off though. This one stops blasting and the warmth fades pretty fast. But the tradeoff is I’m not waiting twenty minutes for the room to feel livable. I plug it in and within a minute or two I’m comfortable. For me that was worth it because I only really need heat in the spots where I’m sitting anyway.

One thing I didn’t expect is that I actually run it less than I thought I would. Since the warmth is so direct, I turn it off when I get up to do stuff and I dont feel like I lost anything. With the radiator I always felt like I had to keep it running all evening. So my bill evened out a bit compared to what I was doing before.

If you already have a working radiator I wouldnt toss it. Maybe keep it for the really cold nights and use the smaller one for everyday. Thats kind of what I ended up doing.

I’d just open the box before ordering anything extra. Mine came with a couple spare tips tucked in the packaging, so it’s probably fine to hold off.

I have a pair of prescription frames that are honestly on the bigger side, mostly because I prefer that look, and they do fit but it’s not like there’s tons of extra room. The arms on my glasses are fairly standard though, not those thick chunky ones. I had to get used to putting the PolorVision on a certain way, kind of tilting it so the arms slide over without catching on my frames. Once they’re on, they sit fine and don’t feel like they’re squeezing my head or anything.

I don’t think I’d want to go much bigger than what I have, but for my day to day driving they work well enough. I mainly use them for longer trips and they stay put pretty good. If your glasses have really chunky arms, that might be where you run into trouble.

in reply to: Does SynGas need a specific type of OBD2 port? #6668
    Susan Keller

My 2007 has the older style port and SynGas has been working fine in it for a couple of months now. The port itself is pretty much the same across all cars from that era, so I wouldn’t worry about the year. The only thing I noticed is that once it’s plugged in, it sits pretty flush, so it’s not like you have to fight with it or anything. The connector clicked right in and that was that. I think the bigger thing is just making sure it’s pushed in all the way, because the port can be in an awkward spot on some cars and it’s easy to think it’s seated when it’s not. But you’ll know pretty quick once you start driving, it just works or it doesn’t. Mine adapted to my driving style after a few weeks and I’ve been happy with it since.
