So I finally swapped out my old plug-in detector for the CarbonOne Safe and I’m still getting used to it. The old one had this super loud continuous beep that I could hear from anywhere, but the new one seems to do a few short beeps first before the alarm actually kicks in. Is that normal for the CarbonOne Safe, or did I get a weird unit? Just curious if anyone else noticed the same thing.

Mine does the same thing. The short beeps are just the unit checking itself or whatever before it actually goes off. Took me a couple weeks to not jump every time it did that during a test. Sounds normal to me.

Mine does the short beeps too before the real alarm, but my issue is the beep itself. It’s not as loud as the old one. I can hear it from the next room, but if I’m in the basement or outside, I miss it entirely. That constant loud blast was annoying but at least it worked.

At first I thought something was wrong with mine too, but honestly now I kind of prefer the short beeps. It gives me a second to look at the screen and see what’s actually going on before the loud alarm starts. With my old detector, it was just instant chaos and I’d be running around the house trying to figure out what set it off. At least with this one, those few short beeps are enough for me to check if it’s a real issue or if I accidentally burned some toast and it’s just being dramatic about the smoke.

The loud alarm does still kick in though, so it’s not like you’re going to miss it. I’ve had mine for a couple months now and I’ve gotten used to the pattern. My old one was definitely louder and more jarring, but I think the tradeoff is worth it since this one actually tells me what it’s detecting. My old one just screamed and I had to guess if it was CO or smoke or whatever.

I wouldn’t say yours is weird or defective. It’s just a different style of alerting you. Once you’ve had it for a bit, you’ll probably stop noticing the difference. I know I did.

The short beeps before the alarm are normal, it does a quick self-check. My complaint is the alarm volume once it actually goes off. It’s not terrible, but it’s noticeably quieter than my old one. I keep mine in the hallway and I can still hear it, but barely from the bedroom with the door shut.

The short beeps are normal, mine does the same thing. It’s just the unit doing its little pre-flight check before it commits to the full alarm. I actually didn’t mind it once I figured out what was happening, but I get why it throws you off at first. The old detector was just instant chaos, so this feels like it’s hesitating.

What I did notice is that the actual alarm tone is different enough that it took me a while to react to it. The old one was this long continuous blast, and this one is more rhythmic. If I’m in the middle of something, I sometimes second-guess whether it’s the detector or some appliance beeping in the kitchen. That part still bugs me a little, but I’ve gotten used to the pattern now. I don’t think you got a weird unit. It’s just how the thing behaves.

I noticed the same thing when I swapped mine in. It does those short chirps first and then the full alarm kicks in if it’s still detecting something. I just figured that was the new normal for this model, so I wouldn’t stress about getting a weird unit.

I actually think the old beep was better for the kind of alarm I need. The short chirps on the CarbonOne blend in with my microwave and other kitchen sounds, so I’ve almost missed it a couple of times. The continuous loud one was annoying but at least it got my attention instantly. Maybe mine is just quieter than yours, but I wouldn’t mind a louder pattern.

It’s funny you mention that because I remember the exact same thing happening when I first swapped mine in. I was standing there waiting for the loud blast and instead got these little chirps first, like the thing was clearing its throat. I thought maybe I didn’t press it in all the way or something. But after a few weeks with it, I actually think the pattern makes sense for how I use it. With the old one, any little thing would set it off and it was all or nothing. The short beeps kind of let me glance at the display and see what it’s picking up before the room turns into a fire drill.

That said, I haven’t had a real emergency yet, so I can’t say if the actual alarm is as scary loud as the old one. I just hope it doesn’t decide to do the quiet chirps during something serious. I’d rather have the panic beep than a polite heads-up at 3am. Are you keeping it in the same spot as the old one?

Mine does the exact same thing and I actually like it. The short chirps give me a heads up before the full alarm, which is nice when I’m in the other room. I feel like I can tell the difference between a real alarm and just the detector doing its thing.

The chirps are normal, mine has done that since day one and it’s still working fine. I actually think it’s a decent compromise because the short beeps are enough to get my attention without the full blast going off right away. I’ll take that over the old detector that sounded like a fire truck every time I burned some toast.

Mine does the same thing, the short beeps come first and then the full alarm. I actually checked the manual when I first noticed it because I thought something was off, but it’s just how it warns you. The old detector I had before never did that, so it took a bit to get used to.

Yeah that’s the normal sequence for this one. Mine does the short chirps first, then if it keeps detecting whatever it’s detecting it escalates into the full alarm. Took me a while to get used to it too because the old detector I had would just go straight to screaming.

One thing I’ll say about the pre-chirps though, they’re not just a warning. I noticed the display shows the reading at the same time, so you get a quick look at what’s setting it off before the loud part starts. That’s actually saved me a couple times when cooking set off the smoke side, I could see the number climbing and just opened a window before the full alarm went off.

So yeah, your unit is fine. Different pattern than what you’re used to, but it’s not broken.
