Honestly, I’d probably just try it and see. These clamp-on sharpeners mostly rely on the screw to tighten down, so as long as the chain isn’t something totally off-size, it should hold well enough to run a file through. I’d be more worried about the file size matching your chain than the clamp.
Honestly, I think the remote range complaints are blown out of proportion. I can change settings from across my living room without any issue, and it’s not like the unit has a clear line of sight. People probably just have theirs blocked by too much furniture or something metal.
It’s probably fine. The guide does require a little more downward force than freehanding, but that’s mostly because the file is being held at a consistent angle instead of letting it skate across the tooth. If the file isn’t new, that could add to it too.

I think part of it might be that the surface is just more rigid, so any slight vibration from the blade gets transmitted differently through the handle. On wood you feel that little bit of absorption, but on something harder the feedback is more direct. Could just be a matter of getting used to it though.
It probably depends on what you’re playing, but yeah, I’d just keep it plugged in for TV mode. Saves the hassle of watching the battery.
