Okay so I’m thinking about getting Tagsley for my wallet, but I don’t use a case on my phone. Does it still connect to Find My if it’s just in my bag or pocket? I know it uses other Apple devices, but I’m not sure if it needs to be near my iPhone all the time or if it’s fine. Just wondering before I buy one.

I would still get it if I were you. The whole point of these Find My trackers is that they don’t need to be near your phone. It pings off any random Apple device that happens to pass by, so as long as you’re in a city or anywhere with people around, it’ll update. I keep mine in my backpack and my phone is usually in my hand or my pocket, but I’ve definitely tested it by leaving the bag at a friend’s place and I could still see it on the map from across town. The case thing doesn’t matter at all. It’s just a card sitting in your wallet, not like it needs to be touching your phone. I think people get confused because AirTags have that whole UWB precision finding thing, but this is just regular Find My network stuff. Works fine.

It just broadcasts a signal that any nearby Apple device picks up and relays to you. Toss it in a bag, a coat pocket, wherever, it really doesn’t care about the phone being in a case or not. The setup is the only part that needs your actual phone.

That’s not a Tagsley problem though, that’s just how Find My works with anything. If you’re in a city or a normal town, you’ll be fine.

I actually found this out by accident when I left my wallet at a restaurant a few months back. I was already a few blocks away before I realized it, and I pulled up Find My thinking it would just show me the last place I had it. Instead it showed the actual restaurant because some random person’s phone picked up the signal while they were eating there. I wasn’t even near my own phone at that moment, it was in my bag and I was looking at my watch.

The case thing really has nothing to do with how it functions day to day. Once you pair it with your Apple ID, it’s just out there doing its thing. It doesn’t need to be near your phone to work. It needs to be near any Apple device, which is basically everywhere these days.

I’ve had mine since around the holidays and it’s been through the wash once too, which I was not happy about, but it survived that too. If you’re just tossing it in a bag or a pocket, I really wouldn’t overthink the case angle at all.

I think people get hung up on that because the product photos always show it tucked into a fancy wallet or a MagSafe holder, but the actual Find My connection doesn’t care about the case at all. That said, there is a small catch. If you’re walking around with it loose in your pocket or bag, it’s still fine because your phone will pick it up constantly. But if you leave the wallet at home or in another room, the location updates depend on random Apple devices passing by. That’s true no matter what case you use though, so I wouldn’t let that be the deciding factor.

I use mine in a card holder that doesn’t even close properly, and I still get left-behind alerts whenever I forget it on my desk at work. The case is just a protective shell, really. If anything, keeping it loose might make it easier to charge since you can just toss it on any wireless pad without fiddling with a holder.

Only thing I’d say is make sure you set it up properly in the Find My app, because the first time I paired mine I didn’t realize it needed the firmware update to show up reliably. After that it’s been smooth.

When I’ve needed to locate it, it pops up on the map pretty quickly. The only time I’ve had a slight delay is in a really empty parking lot, but that’s just how the network works. I don’t think the case changes how the Bluetooth signal works at all, it just keeps it from getting scratched up. Mine has a few scuffs now but it still works the same as day one.
