I wouldn’t buy them just for movies. I’d rather keep using subtitles and save the earbuds for actual conversations, that’s where they make more sense to me.
I’ve used mine a few times right as the sun was going down and bats were out. The screen gets a bit washed out until it’s darker, so I usually just wait another ten minutes. Once the light drops enough the IR kicks in and they show up fine.
I mostly use mine indoors when the dog won’t settle, and even through two rooms it stays responsive. Out in the yard I haven’t pushed it anywhere near 400m, but for normal backyard distance it hasn’t dropped on me yet.
It’s marketed for gum sensitivity, so it’s not like you’d be using it completely off-label. Whether it actually delivers on that is another thing, but the intended use lines up with what you’re dealing with.
That low hum is just what you get with a fan moving air around. I had a similar switch last year, going from a plain rack to something with a motor, and the noise bugged me for maybe the first few days. Then my brain just filed it away as background noise, like a fridge running. What actually made me notice it less was where I put the thing. Mine sits in a corner near the bathroom, and the tile and walls kind of bounce the sound around more than I expected. When I moved it a couple feet away from the wall, the hum was way less noticeable. I don’t think you’re stuck with it being annoying forever, but I also don’t think you’ll ever get true silence back. That’s just the trade for not waiting two days for a shirt to dry.
I got the Vanotium mostly because my plastic board had those deep knife grooves that never seemed to get fully clean. Not just stains, actual cuts in the plastic where stuff could sit. The titanium surface doesn’t do that, so there’s nowhere for chicken juice to hide. That part is real, one wipe and it looks done.
But I’ll be straight with you, it’s not zero effort. You still have to deal with it right after cutting, same as any board. The difference is it takes maybe thirty seconds instead of me standing there with a sponge trying to dig gunk out of scratches. So it’s less gross, not less often.
The thing I didn’t expect is the noise. Not terrible, but it’s a different sound than plastic, more of a clink. Took me a week to stop noticing. My knives seem fine so far but I’ve only had it a couple months, so I can’t tell you anything about long term wear yet.
Makes sense, seems like it just depends on the desk setup. I moved mine a bit further back and stopped caring after a while. It still moves a receipt now and then but whatever, that’s a me problem.
Back pocket is fine for the card itself, but I stopped doing it because the blocking only works if it’s actually between the reader and your cards. Sitting on it all day shifts things around and mine kept ending up off to the side, so it wasn’t doing much. Front pocket or a dedicated slot just works better for me.
I’d skip it if smell is your only reason. You’re basically paying and charging a cap for something a quick rinse and air dry mostly handles already. The UV thing sounds nice in theory, but it’s not magic. It won’t clean grime or that film that builds up on the threads and gasket, and that stuff is usually what actually starts stinking. I’ve seen people baby these caps, keep them charged, and still get funk because they ignored the seal area. A regular bottle is simpler and has nothing to charge. If you already leave water sitting for days and forget to wash it, the cap won’t fix that habit. It might delay the smell a bit, but you’re adding another gadget to maintain. For daily water at home or work, that tradeoff sounds annoying. I’d rather buy a second cheap bottle and rotate them.
Having the ceiling fan on doesn’t mess with it in my experience. If anything it helps move the cooler air around instead of letting it just sit in one spot. I keep both running in my room and never had an issue.
If your fridge is packed full with tall bottles and bulky containers, yeah, it can be a bit of a squeeze to find a clear spot. I ended up moving mine onto the door shelf because it kept getting knocked over by stuff in the main compartment. It’s not a huge deal, but it does mean I lose a little space for condiments.
Seems backwards to me. I’d grab a card first, otherwise you’re just carrying around a fancy monocular.
Put it on the floor angled toward you. That draft will just blow the heat right back at you if it’s up high.
It flashes the whole time. I use mine mostly for peace of mind on late dog walks and the strobe is still going when I get home and put the pin back in. That part works as you want it to. I will say the battery drain is the thing I keep an eye on, but that is more of a maintenance thing than a flaw.
I get the worry about losing the tips, but I wouldn’t let that be the reason to skip it. The little box it arrives in is decent enough to keep everything together if you’re just tossing it in a drawer. I’ve had mine for a few months now and haven’t lost anything yet, though I couldn’t tell you if it’d survive being thrown loose into a bag with heavier tools.
Mine barely holds on if the watch is at a slight angle, so I just lay it flat and it gets through the night fine.
Mine sits about a foot from my elbow, sort of off to the left, and that’s where it actually feels like it’s doing something. I tried it further back once and it was basically just a tiny fan pretending to be useful. If you want the cool air, it has to be close enough to hit your skin directly.
The screen works without a card, that’s not the issue. But I’d think twice about skipping the card entirely. I figured I’d just use mine for viewing too, then realized I wanted to check something I saw the next morning and had no way to save it. A cheap card costs less than the regret of missing a good shot.
The short beeps are normal, mine does the same thing. It’s just the unit doing its little pre-flight check before it commits to the full alarm. I actually didn’t mind it once I figured out what was happening, but I get why it throws you off at first. The old detector was just instant chaos, so this feels like it’s hesitating.
What I did notice is that the actual alarm tone is different enough that it took me a while to react to it. The old one was this long continuous blast, and this one is more rhythmic. If I’m in the middle of something, I sometimes second-guess whether it’s the detector or some appliance beeping in the kitchen. That part still bugs me a little, but I’ve gotten used to the pattern now. I don’t think you got a weird unit. It’s just how the thing behaves.
It’s hard to say it’s purely the app. I think a lot of it depends on the phone you’re using too. My old phone made every camera feel laggy, but since I switched, everything feels snappier. I wouldn’t blame the camera itself until you mess with the network setup a bit more.
I’d still pack the spray. Took mine on a trip where the mosquitoes were relentless and the light didn’t do much beyond keeping things from hovering around the lamp itself. It’s a decent light, but I wouldn’t rely on it to keep me bite-free. For a weekend trip, just bring the spray and use the light as a light.
I used mine from a rain barrel once, not even a proper bucket, and it pulled fine. Pressure was okay for knocking dust off patio furniture, nothing crazy. The hose thing is definitely easier, but if you’re just doing a quick rinse it gets the job done. Just don’t expect it to blast off caked-on mud.
