I’m thinking about getting the Qinux Talkbuds mainly for watching foreign movies and shows. Does the translation work well for that, or is it more for face to face talking? I don’t need perfect accuracy, just enough to follow the plot.

Probably fine for subtitles-level understanding but I wouldn’t count on it for fast dialogue. The lag builds up when characters talk over each other, and that’s half of what makes foreign films watchable. It’s more of a conversation tool than a movie gadget.

I’ve actually used them for a few foreign shows and they held up better than I expected. The translation keeps up fine for normal scenes, and I could follow what was going on without subtitles most of the time. I’d go ahead and get them if that’s your main thing.

I mostly use mine for movies and shows and they work great for that. People keep saying they’re only good for face to face stuff but I’ve watched a bunch of Korean dramas with them and had no trouble following along.

I’ve been looking at these too, mostly for the same reason. From what I gather the translation side is really built around conversation, like two people talking back and forth. Movies are a different beast because the audio is mixed, there’s background music, and dialogue overlaps constantly. One thing I read is that the mic picks up whatever is playing around you, so if you’re watching on a laptop speaker it’s basically translating the whole soundtrack, not just the voices. Some people run the audio through the phone app instead, which might work better, but I haven’t seen that confirmed anywhere. For just following the plot I think it could be okay in slower scenes. The chaotic action stuff is where I’d expect it to fall apart. Still on the fence myself since the price isn’t nothing and I’d rather not gamble on it.

Movies are a different beast than talking to someone across a table. The app needs clean audio to translate, and movie soundtracks bury dialogue under music and effects, so expect gaps. If you keep the volume low and stick to dialogue-heavy scenes it might be passable, but I wouldn’t buy these expecting them to carry a whole film.

Watched a couple K-dramas with mine and it handled the quiet scenes fine. The minute someone whispers or there’s background music it just gives up though. For following the plot that’s usually enough.

You’ll probably get more out of them than people let on, but it depends on what you’re watching. I tried mine with a few subtitled foreign films and it was fine when the dialogue was clean, less so when things got busy. For just following the plot it’s doable.

Wouldn’t count on them for movies. I tried mine during a Spanish film and the translation lagged so far behind I gave up halfway through. Fine for chatting with someone, not for keeping up with dialogue on screen.

Still on the fence myself but for a different reason. I mostly watch stuff with subtitles already, so the earbuds would just be a backup when subs aren’t available. Curious if anyone’s tried them on older films where the audio isn’t as clean.

Mine have been fine for movies when there’s not a ton going on in the background. Watched a French series last month and the quiet dialogue scenes came through well enough to keep up. I still keep subs on when I can though.

I wouldn’t buy them just for movies. I’d rather keep using subtitles and save the earbuds for actual conversations, that’s where they make more sense to me.

I have a similar plan for mine actually, mostly for foreign films where subtitles aren’t an option. The few things I’ve tried so far came through well enough that I could follow what was happening. It’s not word for word perfect but I didn’t expect that anyway.

Tried mine on a Spanish thriller last week and it kept up fine for the plot, though the fast back and forth bits got muddled. I still had to rewind a couple times. It’s not going to replace subtitles if you actually care about every line.

For movies I’d say it’s a mixed bag. The dialogue scenes are fine but anything with overlapping voices or heavy background sound turns into mush. If you’re okay pausing and rewinding a bit it gets the job done.
