I have a closet that has no outlet nearby. The ClairLite is portable but needs to be plugged in to run, right? I get that it’s not battery powered. So what’s the point of calling it portable if you have to drag an extension cord into the room? Just curious if anyone actually uses it in a space like a closet or if that’s a waste of time.

We actually do use ours in a closet, so I get the confusion but the “portable” thing isn’t totally pointless. Ours lives in the hall closet most of the time and I just run an extension cord under the door when I want to use it. It’s not elegant, but the cord stays plugged in behind a shelf so I’m not dragging it out every single time.

The reason I bother is that this particular closet is where we keep the dog’s blankets and a couple of jackets, and it always had that closed up musty smell no matter how often I aired it out. I run the lamp in there for a cycle maybe once a week with the door shut and nobody around, and after a few weeks the smell was noticeably less. Not gone completely, but better. So for me it does something in a small space, even with the cord situation.

The part I’d say is that if you’re picturing yourself carrying it around like a little lantern, that’s not really how it works. It’s portable in the sense that you can move it between rooms, not that you can use it anywhere without power. For a closet specifically, you need to be able to shut the door and keep everyone out while it runs anyway, so the cord is kind of the least of the hassle. If you can’t do that, it’s probably not worth fighting with.

No outlet, no point for me.

Portable just means you can move it from room to room, not that it runs on batteries. For a closet with zero outlets it’s still not going to work unless you’re fine running a cord in there. I’d rather just use it in the rooms that already have power.

Portable just means it’s easy to carry from room to room, not that it works without power. If your closet has no outlet at all, then yeah, that’s just not the right spot for it.

We just run ours in the bathroom and laundry room where there are outlets, and I’ve never once felt the need to haul it into a closet. If there’s no plug in there, that’s just how it is, and I don’t think that makes the whole thing pointless.

I think the portability label gets oversold for anyone dealing with a truly outlet-free spot. My setup is a bit different because I do have one outlet in the hallway right outside the closet, so I can plug it in there and the cord reaches just fine. That’s the only reason it works for me. If I had zero outlets anywhere near, I wouldn’t bother.

What I’ve learned is that for me the real value isn’t moving it around the house constantly. It’s that I can leave it sitting in one spot and just run it when the closet is closed up. I don’t need to babysit it or stand there. That part actually fits how I like to handle chores, quiet and low effort.

But I’m also picky about where I put things. I don’t like tripping over cords or having a gadget that only works if I rearrange furniture. So when a product says portable, I expect it to mean I can grab it and go, not that I need to hunt for an outlet first. That’s where the marketing and my real life don’t match up.

If the closet is the main place you want to use it, I’d say figure out the outlet situation before buying. For me it’s been fine because of that hallway plug, but I wouldn’t have bought it if the closest power source was in another room.

Closet use is mostly pointless anyway. UV needs a clear line to the surface, and a packed closet blocks half of it. I’d rather point it at an empty bathroom.

Portable just means it has a handle, not that it runs on magic. No outlet, no lamp. I’d stop trying to make closet sanitizing a thing.

I have one in a small entryway area and it does help with that musty smell, but I still plug it in where there’s an outlet. For a closet with nothing nearby, I’d probably skip it unless you’re okay running a cord. The portability is nice for moving between rooms that already have power.

I think the “portable” label is getting read way too literally here. It’s not really meant to be carried into every random corner of the house. It’s portable in the sense that you can move it between rooms that actually have power, not that it’s supposed to work in a closet with zero outlets.

But I’d push back on the idea that closet use is automatically pointless. If the closet is small and mostly empty, a short run probably does something. The issue is that most closets are packed with clothes, boxes, and whatever else, so the light only hits what’s directly in front of it. That’s not a ClairLite problem, that’s just how UV works in general. Same reason a lamp in a cluttered room won’t do much for the stuff behind a couch.

So for me the real question isn’t “does it work in a closet,” it’s “is your closet clear enough for it to matter.” If it’s not, the outlet problem is kind of secondary anyway.

If the closet has no outlet then no, it’s useless there. I don’t get why people keep trying to force these things into every corner of the house. Plug it in somewhere it actually fits and leave it at that.

I actually don’t think a closet is a waste of time if the lamp can sit in there on its own for a cycle. Sure, no outlet means you’d need an extension cord, but that’s true for basically anything you plug in. Portable just means you can move it around and tuck it in different spots, not that it runs on batteries.

Portable just means you can move it, not that cords disappeared.

I’d just run an extension cord and be done with it. Not elegant, but I already do that for a little desk fan when I want it somewhere specific. If the closet is the spot you care about, the cord is a minor thing.

Portable is just marketing speak for “you can move it somewhere else that also has an outlet.” That’s it. If a closet has no power, it’s not going in there no matter what the box says.

I wouldn’t bother with a closet. If there’s no outlet, that’s the end of it for me. I’d just use it in the rooms that already have power and skip the extension cord mess.

I’d just use it in rooms that actually have outlets.

I’d be more worried about the closet itself than the cord. UV-C needs direct line of sight to actually do anything, so a cramped closet packed with clothes and boxes is basically a maze of shadows. Anything tucked behind a jacket or in a corner isn’t getting hit no matter how long the timer runs.

I used a similar lamp in a small spare room and it did help with that musty smell after a few cycles, but that room was mostly empty and open. A cluttered closet is a different situation. You’d have to clear it out completely every time you run the thing, which kind of defeats the convenience angle.

So no, I don’t think it’s automatically a waste, but the outlet is the smaller problem. If you can empty the closet and run a cord for 20 minutes here and there, fine. If not, the lamp is just going to sanitize the air and whatever happens to be facing it.

Portable just means you can carry it room to room, not that it works without power. If the closet has no outlet, it’s basically a paperweight in there. I’d use it somewhere that already has power.

Portable just means it has a handle and isn’t bolted to a wall. I’d still call it a waste in a closet since you can’t be in there while it runs anyway. I’ve only ever used mine in open rooms.

Mine just lives in the bathroom, closet cord hassle isn’t worth it.
