I have been using mine for about a month, and my experience has been that the app is not needed for basic phrases if the glasses are already connected. I tested this on a trip last week, I just tapped to start and said a few simple sentences in Spanish, and it translated right away without me opening anything on my phone. The phone was in my bag the entire time. That said, I did notice it only handles shorter stuff well in that state. Longer or more complicated sentences were hit or miss, and I ended up pulling out my phone for those. So for quick everyday things it works fine without opening the app every time, but I would not rely on it for anything more involved. It is convenient for basics, not a full replacement for having the app ready.
I get why you’re asking, since the manual is pretty bare bones. From what I’ve noticed with mine, it doesn’t really lock you into one app, but it’s not fully open either. I tried linking it to a running app I already had and it only pulled basic step data, nothing else came through. So if you want the sleep and heart rate stuff to actually show up somewhere, you’ll probably need to stick with the Aptofit app for that.
The thing that bothers me a bit is the battery drains noticeably faster when I keep it paired to a second app, so I ended up just using the one it came with. It’s not amazing but it does the job for daily use. If you only care about steps, then sure, another app might pick those up fine. Just don’t expect everything to carry over.
Mine is on a shelf behind the monitor, so the papers are already out of the way. I have not tested it sitting right next to loose sheets. I doubt it moves much at the lower speeds.

I would not assume the card comes with it. From what I have seen with cameras in this price range, the SD card is almost always the one thing they leave out of the box. Better to have one ready than to sit there staring at a camera you cannot turn on and record with.
I actually think the lack of a case is a bit overblown. Mine came in a small cardboard box with a molded insert that holds the pen and the tips in place, and that is where it lives when I am not using it. I keep the box on a shelf in my workspace, so I really do not see the need for a separate pouch.
I have had mine for a couple of months now and have used it on a few wood projects. The tips are still all accounted for because the insert keeps them snug. I would not want to carry it loose in a bag with other tools though. That seems like a good way to snap a tip or scratch the pen itself.
If you are the type to toss things into a drawer without their packaging, then you will probably want to find your own solution. But for me, the original box works fine for storage.
The older ones were a hassle, especially abroad. I don’t miss standing around trying to get a signal to register. The Ryoko is just easier to live with day to day, even if the connection itself isn’t magic. It’s the convenience that makes it feel better.
I’ve used mine with a mid-range Android for a few weeks now and it connects just like any ordinary Bluetooth earbud. No app drama, no constant re-pairing, nothing that made me regret the purchase. The translation side is another matter entirely, but for basic pairing, I wouldn’t worry about your phone model.

I would probably give it a shot in the garage, but I wouldn’t expect it to be a miracle fix. The cold shouldn’t be an issue, but I think the real problem is going to be how much you have stored in there. If it’s packed with boxes and stuff, the sound just won’t get around very well.
Placement probably matters less than the marketing suggests, but I would still lean toward plugging it in somewhere on a main floor outlet rather than a bedroom. The distance from the box is one thing, but the circuit it lands on seems more relevant to me. If you only have one unit, I would just put it where it is convenient and not lose sleep over it.
I have used mine in a few different rooms and the carpet definitely changes the numbers. I do not think it is you. Hard floor gives me consistent readings, carpet gives me readings that jump around for no reason. I would just keep it on the tile and not trust it anywhere else.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it honestly. A little play in the slot seems pretty common on these types of devices, as long as it clicks in and doesn’t pop out on its own. I haven’t had any issues with mine saving footage, so I just leave it alone.
