Do universal remotes actually work with old DVD players and VCRs?

    I’m trying to clean up the coffee table and have a mix of old stuff, like a DVD player from 2005 and a hand-me-down TV. I don’t want to spend a lot on a hub if it won’t talk to the older gear. Is it just a matter of finding the right code, or do some brands just not play nice? Mostly I just want to stop using three different remotes.
