I think the constant-on question really depends on what you’re expecting from it. I had mine running for about three weeks straight and the smell situation in my fridge was noticeably better, but when I let the battery die and didn’t recharge it for a few days, things started going back to normal pretty quick. So for me it’s more of a maintenance thing than a one-time fix. It’s not like you can just toss it in there and forget about it forever. The no-filter part is nice though, I’ll give it that. I don’t miss hunting down replacement cartridges like I did with my old one. Is it a gimmick? I don’t think so, but I also don’t think it’s magic. If your fridge already has a serious odor problem from something spilled and never cleaned, this won’t fix that. It’s more for keeping things neutral day to day.
A drying rack is silent because nothing is moving, so once you add a fan the hum is basically unavoidable. Mine isn’t the same model but it has a fan too and I can hear it from the next room if everything else is off. It never bothered me enough to do anything about it though. I actually find it kind of soothing now, like white noise while the clothes dry. The part I had to get used to was the heat smell at first. That faded after a few uses. If the hum is steady and low it’s probably just the fan doing its job. If it ever starts rattling or clicking that’s when I’d start poking around.
I used the old basic guide for years and yeah it was fiddly. The SawShark is definitely easier for me to keep the angle steady, I don’t have to think about it as much. It’s not a huge life changer but I reach for it more often than the old one.
I’ve got one in my kitchen which has a pretty tall ceiling and I mainly notice it when I’m actually in the path of it. Once I step a few feet away it’s like it barely registers.
I’ve got a Flixy on the bedroom TV and it does grab the 5GHz band on its own, but only when I’m in the same room as the router basically. Once I moved it to the back bedroom it kept flipping over to 2.4 and that’s when I started noticing the little pauses during shows. Not huge, just a blip here and there. What surprised me was that it wasn’t really about speed, more that the 2.4 signal in my house gets crowded with everything else, doorbell, baby monitor, all that stuff. So even though the stick showed a decent connection it would still stutter now and then. I ended up just leaving it and living with the occasional hiccup since it’s only the spare room. If yours is doing the same thing I’d at least peek at which band it’s actually on before changing anything else.
My last apartment had the same issue and I just kept mine on top of a cabinet, worked fine for the main local stations. It’s not like it has to physically see outside or anything. I’d say just try it wherever you actually want it and see what you get.
I never really thought about the positioning when I got mine. The port in my car is hidden behind a little panel that I have to leave open, so the SynGas just kind of sits there in the dark. Been fine for months now. I’d say just make sure it’s not dangling right where your passengers might kick it.
I swapped mine in for a cheap pull-down that I kept in the garage for movie nights and honestly, the ScryneX handles daylight better than I thought it would. Not because it’s some magic gray material or anything, but it’s not just a plain white sheet either. The surface has a bit more structure to it, if that makes sense. It doesn’t wash out as fast as my old screen did when the sun hit the side of the room.
I was worried about the same thing since my living room has big windows and I don’t have curtains that fully block light. I’d say as long as you’re not pointing the projector straight at a window, you get a decent picture. The gray tint on my old screen gave it a slight edge with contrast, but the ScryneX makes up for it with how evenly the light spreads. I don’t get those hot spots or dim corners like I used to.
It’s not going to look like a TV in the middle of the afternoon, but if you’re comparing it to a pull-down that’s been through a few years of use, it’s a clear step up. Plus not having to deal with the hooks and the rolling mechanism every time I want to watch something is a win on its own. I just hang it up and go.
It is kind of funny how many people are assuming it doesn’t have one. I actually had the opposite experience with mine. I got it for my bathroom and left it plugged in overnight by mistake one time. In the morning it was off, which surprised me because I thought I had left it running. I just figured it had some safety thing kick in after a few hours, but I never saw anything in the manual about it either.
Maybe it is just the overheating protection that ended up turning it off because the room got warm enough? I honestly didn’t think about it much until I saw this thread. Either way, I would not rely on it to shut itself off. I just make sure to pull it out of the socket when I am done, especially now that I have read all these replies.
I got mine mostly to help with my own dog inside the house, but I did leave it on the back deck once while the neighbor’s dog was barking at their back fence. It seemed to catch most of it, but I also wasn’t really counting the misses. I think if the dog is facing away or there’s a lot of background noise, it’s probably hit or miss. For what it is, I wouldn’t expect it to be a long-range miracle.
I tend to run mine on the lower fan setting just because I find the noise more noticeable on the higher one, and I haven’t really noticed any dampness. Could be that the stronger airflow is the culprit though.
I switched from an older cam to SpyFocus mainly because of that same lag issue. For me the difference was pretty noticeable, live view feels a lot more responsive now. Still not perfect, but it’s good enough that I don’t get annoyed waiting for the feed to catch up anymore.
For me it kind of depends on what kind of noise it is. Music or people chatting in the background doesn’t seem to throw it off as much as random street sounds like honking or construction. I’ve had it miss a word here and there but not enough to make me stop using it in those spots.
I think the TENS comparison gets thrown around a lot but they really don’t feel alike. I had a friend let me try their TENS unit once and it was that weird tingly buzzing thing that made my skin jump. The Back Restore is more like a heavy thumping pressure, almost like someone is pushing their palm into your back and vibrating it. It’s slower and deeper if that makes sense. Not really a zap feeling at all. I actually found the TENS kind of uncomfortable because it felt too sharp, but the vibration on this is more of a dull, soothing pulse. I can see why people describe it as closer to a massage because it’s working the muscle rather than just annoying the surface. If you’re expecting that TENS tingle you’ll be surprised, but in a good way.
I’d just double check that the port actually outputs to the screen before buying. My in-laws have an old HDMI port that works fine for a DVD player but for some reason their TV just won’t recognize newer streaming sticks at all. Not saying that’ll happen here, but old TVs can be picky in weird ways.
I think the overheating thing gets blown out of proportion sometimes. I’ve had mine going for a good chunk of the afternoon before and it just felt slightly warm to the touch when I grabbed it. Not hot, not alarming. I didn’t notice any lag or weird behavior while it was recording either. I just made sure it was sitting on a shelf with some space around it, not shoved behind a pile of stuff. I’ve also had it running in a room that gets a lot of sun and it still did fine. The battery is honestly the bigger thing to think about if you’re doing a multi-hour stretch. I found that out the hard way. As long as it’s not crammed into a tight spot, I wouldn’t stress too much about it shutting down on you.
I haven’t tried it on a super tiny chain, but the clamp on mine felt pretty adjustable. It kind of just squeezes down until it’s tight, so I’d be surprised if it couldn’t handle a narrow one.
Thanks for all the input, everyone. Sounds like it’s not a complete dud with low pressure, which is good enough for me. I’ll probably just grab one and see how it goes.
I think 14 hours might be possible if you’re running it on a lower setting or something, but mine definitely didn’t hit that either. Not a huge deal for me since I usually charge it during the day anyway.
Hmm, that’s interesting. I feel like I’ve seen a few people mention the battery being a bit less than advertised. I wonder if it varies a lot depending on which features you’re actually using at the same time.
From my experience it seems pretty automatic. I’ve had it catch a couple of short naps without me touching the app at all. But yeah, it’s not gonna get every single one.
I think it’s worth a shot since it’s not that expensive. I know someone who tried it on a pretty stubborn dog and it actually helped a bit, just took a few days to kick in.
