Hey everyone, quick question before I decide on getting a SynGas. I know it just plugs into the OBD2 port, but does it matter if the port is in an awkward spot or if the device hangs loose? I’m wondering if it needs to be positioned a certain way or if it’s fine just plugged in wherever. Anyone know if that affects how it learns or works?

If the port is in a stupid spot, just leave it plugged in and tuck the cable so it doesn’t dangle near your pedals. I would not go out of my way to reposition anything. It just sits there and does its thing. If you can close the port cover or push it behind the trim, do that. Otherwise don’t overthink it.

Mine’s been plugged in for about three months now and honestly I just wedge it in wherever the port is and forget about it. My OBD port is under the dash on the driver side, kind of facing down, so the device hangs at an angle. I didn’t bother trying to reposition it or secure it with anything. It’s still there, it’s still working, and the car runs the same as it did on day one.

I did worry at first that it might block something or get knocked loose when I get in and out, but it’s small enough that it doesn’t get in the way. I think people overthink the placement thing. It’s not like it has a sensor that needs to face a certain direction or anything. It just reads what the car is doing through the port, so as long as it’s connected it should be fine.

The only thing I’d say is if your port is in a spot where the device sticks out far and you’re worried about bumping it with your knee, maybe just tuck the cable or rotate it slightly if the port allows. But if you’re asking whether it needs some special angle to learn your driving, I really don’t think that matters. Mine’s been in an awkward spot the whole time and it learned fine after a couple weeks of commuting. I’d just plug it in and not stress about where it’s pointing.

Positioning really shouldn’t matter. It’s just reading data and sending its own signals back through the port. Mine sits sideways in a tight spot under the dash and it still adapted fine after the usual driving time. The only thing I’d avoid is letting it hang where your knee hits it constantly, but that’s more about the port breaking than the device working.

I have an OBD port that sits pretty much right next to my knee and the SynGas has never had an issue being wedged in there sideways. It learns what it needs to learn regardless of how the casing is oriented.

I can see why you’d ask. My port is under the dash sort of facing the floor, so the SynGas hangs down a bit. I was worried about it too, but after a few weeks I just stopped thinking about it. It’s been maybe two months now and it hasn’t moved or caused any issues.

The only thing I’d say is make sure it’s not in a spot where your foot or knee hits it when you get in and out. I had mine angled once where I kept bumping it getting in, and it eventually popped loose. Once I pushed it back in and let it hang the way it wanted to, it’s been fine since. The learning thing seems to just happen on its own, it doesn’t care which way it’s pointing. I wouldn’t stress about getting it positioned perfectly, just plug it in somewhere it won’t get knocked around.

I actually had mine come loose once because the port is in a spot where my foot brushes against it getting in and out. After that I just made sure it was pushed in snug and it’s been fine. I don’t think the angle matters at all, but if yours is somewhere it can get bumped, that might be more of an issue than how it’s positioned.

I never really thought about the positioning when I got mine. The port in my car is hidden behind a little panel that I have to leave open, so the SynGas just kind of sits there in the dark. Been fine for months now. I’d say just make sure it’s not dangling right where your passengers might kick it.

Position really doesn’t matter. Mine is in a spot where it’s jammed at an angle behind the kick panel and I’ve never had an issue with it learning or staying put. It just reads the data it needs through the port, so orientation is irrelevant.

I would just plug it in and see if it stays put. If the spot is awkward, a zip tie or something to keep it from dangling would be my move. The learning part happens through the port itself, not the position of the little box.
