MemberI keep hearing how the Qinux Klampero is beginner friendly and all that, but I’m wondering if it actually brings back a chain that’s already pretty dull or if it’s more for keeping a decent chain in shape. Mine’s not totally shot but it’s definitely not fresh either. Not expecting miracles, just don’t want to waste time if it only works on newer chains.

pixelnomadParticipantI got mine mainly for a chain that was pretty far gone and it definitely improved it. Not like new chain sharp, but it went from chewing through wood to actually cutting again. Took a few passes though, it’s not a one and done thing on a dull chain.

MemberI mostly sharpened by hand before this, and I was expecting the Klampero to be kind of a gimmick that only helped if the chain was already in decent shape. Turned out to be the opposite for me. My chain was past the point where I’d normally just swap it out, and I got a solid session of cutting out of it after running the tool over every tooth a few times. Not a brand new chain by any means, but it stopped wandering in the cut and stopped throwing dust.
The thing that surprised me is how much it helped with consistency. When I sharpened freehand I’d always end up with a couple of teeth that were shorter than the rest, and the chain would cut crooked after a while. With the guide holding the angle I didn’t have that problem nearly as much. So for a chain that’s dull but not destroyed, I’d say it’s worth the time.
Where I’d be careful is if the teeth are really worn down to nubs or you’ve hit a rock or fence and chipped a bunch of them. No guided file is bringing those back, you need to take material off and that’s a different job. But for a chain that’s just been used a lot and lost its edge, mine came back fine.
I’ve run mine maybe four or five times now on two different chains and it’s held up okay. Still on the original file. Not sure how many sharpenings I’ll get before I need to swap that out, but so far so good.

MemberI don’t buy that it’s beginner friendly. The angle control only helps if you actually keep the file straight and don’t rush it, and a worn chain still needs a few solid passes before you notice much. Mine improved a tired chain but it wasn’t some magic reset.

MemberDull chains just stay dull with mine.

RyanTParticipantMine brought back a chain I figured was done.

MemberI picked one up last spring and used it on a chain that was more neglected than dull. It perked up for maybe two sessions and then went right back to struggling, so I ended up just replacing the chain anyway. Might work better if you stay on top of it from the start.

MemberMine did fine on a half worn chain.

Tom in NYCMemberDepends what you mean by not fresh. I’ve seen these guided sharpeners do okay on a chain that just needs a touch up, but once the cutters are actually rounded over, no clamp-on jig is bringing that back. That’s file and patience territory, and even then it’s a slog.

MemberDull chain isn’t automatically a lost cause. Mine had a few rough sharpenings on it and the Klampero got it cutting decent again after a few passes. Just know you’ll be filing longer than you would on a fresh chain.

SarahMParticipantMine didn’t really bring back a chain that was already past it, just made the teeth feel slightly less awful for a bit. If yours is just dull and not chewed up, it might be worth a shot, but I wouldn’t count on it acting like a full reset.

MemberI’ve only used mine on a chain that was still cutting okay, so I can’t say how it handles one that’s properly dull. But the difference on mine felt pretty minor, more like a quick tune up than a real rescue.

Tom BillMemberMine sat in a drawer for two months because I figured it was another gimmick. Eventually tried it on an old chain that had been through a couple seasons of firewood and honestly it did bring the edge back enough to get through a few more tanks. Not razor sharp, but it stopped throwing dust and started making chips again. The guide does most of the work, you just have to actually spend the time going tooth by tooth. If you rush it you get garbage results. I’d say if your chain still has decent teeth left it’s worth a shot. If the teeth are worn down to nubs, no sharpener is going to fix that.

HanSoloParticipantMine worked okay on a chain that was more “meh” than dead. Took more passes than I expected but it did bite again. Not magic, but it wasn’t a waste either.

MemberPrefer paying someone to grind mine properly.

MemberI don’t buy the “beginner friendly” angle. It’s a manual file guide with extra plastic, not some magic restorer. If the teeth are rounded over from a few seasons of cutting dirty wood, no clamp-on gadget is putting an edge back on them, that needs a real grind or a new chain.

MemberDull chain is dull, tool won’t fix that.
