Mine has never died mid-session, so the battery part seems fine in practice. The wire is short though, so charging while wearing it is awkward. I just charge it on the counter between uses.
I had one of these in a rental a couple years back and the five-year thing bugged me too. The box said up to five years but there was nothing printed anywhere on the unit itself, which is annoying. My landlord had clearly just left it there from whoever lived there before, so I had no clue how old it actually was.
What I ended up doing was looking at the little screen one day and noticing the CO number wasn’t sitting at zero like it usually did. It was bouncing around 2 or 3 ppm in a room with no gas anything running. I opened a window, it went back down, so I figured it was just picking up something in the air. But then it kept doing it over the next few weeks even with nothing going on, and that made me start wondering if the sensor was just getting old and reading junk.
The self test never once flagged anything during that whole time. Beeped fine, lights did their thing. So from my experience the test is not catching a sensor that’s drifting. It just confirms the thing turns on and makes noise.
I ended up replacing it because I couldn’t verify the age and the readings looked off. If you know when you plugged yours in, counting from that date is probably the most honest number you’ve got.
Heat definitely works, but it’s more of a steady warmth than anything intense. I can feel it through a shirt, which surprised me. If you want actual heat therapy for a knot, this won’t replace that.
Mine sits on the desk and keeps my hands warm, but it doesn’t do much for the room overall. Fine for a quick fix, not something I’d rely on all winter.
The strobe itself doesn’t need to be visible to work, it will still flash either way. Whether anyone actually sees it is another story. I keep mine on my bag strap instead of a belt loop for that reason.
The shaking might not be the dealbreaker you think it is. It’s more about whether he can hold the device steady enough to get it positioned on the nail in the first place. My own hands aren’t that steady and the bigger issue was just keeping it flat against the nail without it slipping off at an angle. The CarbonOne is fine for short blips, but I wouldn’t treat it like a survival tool. It’s more about keeping the peace of mind for the first few hours, not a week without power.

I wouldn’t worry about it. If anything I’d rather have it a little stiff than risk it going off by mistake.
I’ve noticed the same faint smell with mine. I just run it and walk out, by the time I come back it’s pretty much gone. Not something I really worry about.
I noticed the same thing after a couple weeks. It wiped off pretty easy with a damp cloth so I didn’t think much of it. Still works fine for me.
I wouldn’t count on it being warm in a minute or two. It takes a bit longer than that in my experience.
