Running it only at night makes sense to me. I’ve had mine plugged into a garage outlet for a few months and only switch it on when I’m out there in the evening. Haven’t noticed anything crawling around since, so the on and off thing hasn’t hurt anything for me.
Mine came with the adult and child masks and the adult one seals better on me than the old red cup ever did. The rim is thinner so it sort of molds instead of sitting flat. Worth testing the fit on yourself once before you stash it.
Mine works from the next room with the door shut, so I don’t think walls are the issue. The remote just needs a clear line, even a doorway counts. I’ve used it from my kitchen while the fan sits in the living room and it responds fine.
For me it was mostly a different feel, not a huge jump in ease. The twist handle was more work but I sort of liked controlling the pace. The WineCork Pro just does its thing, which is nice when I’m pouring for a group.
I don’t think the app is as mandatory as people make it sound. I’ve been using mine mostly for travel stuff and I’ve had decent luck just leaving the app open in the background and never touching it. It’s not really “no app” but it’s also not pulling my phone out every sentence either. The thing I’d say is that the experience feels inconsistent depending on where you are and what you’re saying. Short back and forth stuff is fine, but the moment someone talks fast or there’s background noise it just doesn’t keep up. I haven’t found any magic setting that fixes that. So I’d say if you want truly phone free translation, this probably isn’t going to deliver that, but if you’re okay having the app running quietly in the background it’s usable enough. Just don’t expect it to handle a full conversation without you checking the phone at some point.
Check the box contents photo on the listing. Some sellers show the case in the main pics but it’s actually a separate bundle you pay extra for. The price usually gives it away too.
I’d focus less on the socks and more on whether you actually remember to use the thing. That was my problem. I had a mat set up under my desk for about two months and the sock question never crossed my mind because I was wearing them the whole time anyway. What killed it for me was just forgetting it was even there. I’d sit down, get into work, and realize three hours later my feet were nowhere near it. So I started treating it like part of the setup, shoes off or not, and made a point of parking my feet on it when I sat down.
The cord bugged me more than anything. I get why it needs to reach an outlet, but it’s just another thing to deal with in a small space. I don’t think socks change much either way. Bare feet feel a bit more obvious I guess, but I never noticed a real difference in how I felt.
I picked one up for my kitchen counter and the plug has been fine. It gets slightly warm after a while, but nothing that made me nervous. The swivel part is what sold me since my outlet is behind a cabinet.
Mine screwed right onto the existing arm with no adapter. The only thing I’d check is whether your arm has that weird angled ball joint, because those can be hit or miss. Took me like two minutes total.
Depends what you mean by “less common.” I scrolled through the list when I got mine and it had stuff like Basque and Welsh listed, which surprised me. But I wouldn’t count on those being smooth in a real conversation. The mainstream ones are clearly the ones they actually tuned. If your language is somewhere in the middle, you might get basic phrases through, but don’t expect nuance.
If the nightstand is really narrow, I would just check where the heaviest part of the fan sits. Mine is on a fairly tight shelf and the weight is low enough that a light bump doesn’t do anything. I wouldn’t trust it right on the edge, but a few inches back and it feels solid.
If you left it running on Boost all night, yeah, it’s going to warm up. That’s just the ceramic core working harder than the Everyday Mode. Mine does it too, but it settles down pretty quick once you switch it over. I’d only get concerned if it feels actually hot to the touch, not just warm.
The speed thing gets overblown honestly. I switched over last winter and yeah it’s not like a tumble dryer, but I’m not standing there watching it. I set the timer before work and the stuff is done when I get back. That’s the real win for me, not comparing minutes against a rack.
I’d guess the mic does double duty so it’s not like they stripped out call quality to make room for translation. I haven’t used SonaBuds but with my old pair the mic was fine for calls and I’d expect these to be at least on par. If you’re already happy with your current earbuds for talking, the real question is whether the translation feature is worth the switch at all.
Fogging seems pretty hit or miss from what I’ve read. Mine was clear on the last beach trip, but I also made sure the case was dry inside before sealing it. Probably just comes down to the conditions you’re in and how careful you are with it.
The port itself has been the same shape and pinout since the late 90s, so a 2008 model is not an issue. The only thing I’d double-check is whether your specific car has the port powered at all times or only when the ignition is on, since that can affect how the device behaves when parked.
If you’re sitting at a desk, I wouldn’t worry about it. The strap is fine for that. It’s not like you’re going to be doing jumping jacks while it’s on.
I’ve seen a few people say the same thing about save states being unreliable, but that hasn’t been my experience. They’ve worked every time I’ve tried them, no crashes. Might just depend on the game.
