I’ve been trying out the LumaGlasses for a couple weeks and the translation is actually pretty handy. But I’m wondering if I can just use them without opening the app every time. Sometimes I just want to say something and have it translate without pulling out my phone. Is that normal or am I missing a setting?

That’s just how it works, the app has to be running in the background for translation. Bluetooth alone won’t do it. I stopped expecting it to be fully standalone after the first week.

Mine actually does translate without me touching the app if I leave it running in the background. I tested it on a trip last month, glasses paired, app open but phone in my bag, and I just tapped the touch control to start a translation and it worked fine. So I wouldn’t say the app has to be in your face every single time. It does need to be alive back there though, that part is true.

The thing I noticed is that if I fully close the app or my phone kills it to save battery, then yeah, nothing happens and I look like an idiot talking to my glasses. But as long as it’s still sitting in the background, I can go a whole afternoon without actually opening it. I keep it pinned on my phone so it doesn’t get cleared out. So you’re not really missing some hidden setting, it’s more about how your phone manages the app in the background.

I’ve had mine about three weeks and I still open the app first out of habit. My understanding is the phone basically does the heavy lifting, so the glasses alone aren’t doing the translating. Curious if anyone’s gotten it to kick in hands-free reliably though.

I usually just leave the app open in the background and it picks up fine when I talk. If I swipe it away, translation stops working until I open it again, so that’s been my routine. Not sure if there’s a setting I’m missing either.

I’ve had mine about two months and I stopped using the app entirely for quick stuff. Mine translates fine as long as the glasses are on and paired, even with my phone in my pocket. Maybe the app matters more for subtitles, but for just talking back and forth I never open it.

I don’t think the app is optional for translation, at least not in my experience. Bluetooth by itself just handles audio, the actual translating happens on your phone. I still have to have the app open when I want to use it.

Mine picks up fine when the app is just sitting in the background, so I don’t open it before every sentence. But I did notice the subtitles stop showing on my phone once I close it out completely. So it’s less about opening it each time and more about just leaving it running.

I think the app kind of has to be running somewhere in the background for translation to work at all. The glasses themselves are mostly just mic and speaker as far as I can tell. When I first got mine I assumed the translation was happening on the glasses, but then one day I closed the app completely to save battery and tried talking and nothing came through. Opened it back up, worked again right away. So it seems like the phone is doing the actual translating and the glasses are just passing audio back and forth.

That said, you don’t have to actively open it every single time. Mine stays in the background pretty much all day and I just forget about it. The one thing I did change is I turned off battery optimization for the app in my phone settings, because at first my phone kept killing it after a while and I couldn’t figure out why translation randomly stopped working. After that it’s been way more consistent for me.

So basically you’re not missing a setting, it’s just how the thing is built. The app needs to be alive somewhere, but it doesn’t need to be on your screen. Curious if anyone else has noticed the battery thing though, because that was the confusing part for me at the start.

Mine still translates with the app closed, so the whole “app has to be running” thing doesn’t match what I see. I’ve done it plenty of times without opening anything first.

The app is doing the actual translation work, so no, you can’t just leave the phone in your pocket and expect it to fire up on its own. That’s the part people keep glossing over. Glasses are basically a mic and speaker.

I have been using mine for about a month, and my experience has been that the app is not needed for basic phrases if the glasses are already connected. I tested this on a trip last week, I just tapped to start and said a few simple sentences in Spanish, and it translated right away without me opening anything on my phone. The phone was in my bag the entire time. That said, I did notice it only handles shorter stuff well in that state. Longer or more complicated sentences were hit or miss, and I ended up pulling out my phone for those. So for quick everyday things it works fine without opening the app every time, but I would not rely on it for anything more involved. It is convenient for basics, not a full replacement for having the app ready.

Mine won’t translate at all unless the app is open on my phone. I’ve tried just tapping the glasses and talking, nothing happens. So for me at least, the phone is doing the work, not the glasses.

Mine will do short phrases if I tap and talk without opening anything, but anything longer than a sentence and it just sits there until I open the app. So you’re not missing some magic setting, it’s just inconsistent like that.

Mine only translates through the app, but I have noticed it sometimes picks up a phrase if I leave the app running in the background instead of fully closing it. Not sure if that’s a setting I changed or just how it behaves.

Everyone keeps saying the app is mandatory, but mine translates fine without it as long as I leave Bluetooth on and the glasses stay paired. I did a two hour walk last week and never opened the app once. Not saying it handles everything, but the whole “you have to pull out your phone” thing hasn’t been my experience.

I’d just keep the app closed and use the tap and talk thing for quick stuff. For anything longer I still pull out my phone, but that’s fine with me. Not really looking for it to replace full conversations anyway.

I don’t think the app is as mandatory as people make it sound. I’ve been using mine mostly for travel stuff and I’ve had decent luck just leaving the app open in the background and never touching it. It’s not really “no app” but it’s also not pulling my phone out every sentence either. The thing I’d say is that the experience feels inconsistent depending on where you are and what you’re saying. Short back and forth stuff is fine, but the moment someone talks fast or there’s background noise it just doesn’t keep up. I haven’t found any magic setting that fixes that. So I’d say if you want truly phone free translation, this probably isn’t going to deliver that, but if you’re okay having the app running quietly in the background it’s usable enough. Just don’t expect it to handle a full conversation without you checking the phone at some point.
