I’m thinking about getting Repellio for our basement, but I’m not sure about placement. Does it matter if it’s plugged into a lower wall outlet instead of somewhere higher? I read that sound waves can get blocked by stuff, so I was curious if the height makes a big difference or if it’s not that picky.

I keep mine in a lower outlet near the floor and it’s been fine for the garage. The coverage is small enough that I figured the height wouldn’t matter much anyway. As long as nothing is crammed right in front of it, you should be good.

I think people overthink the height thing. Sound waves bounce around a room regardless. Mine is in a low outlet behind a couch and I haven’t seen any critters since I set it up. If the room is cluttered, that’s probably a bigger issue than where the outlet sits.

I would say just go with whatever outlet is convenient. I have one in a lower outlet in my laundry room and it seems to do its job fine down there. The coverage is small enough that I think height matters less than making sure nothing huge is sitting right in front of it. If you have a lot of clutter stacked against the walls in the basement, that’s probably the bigger thing to watch out for.

I had mine plugged into a lower outlet near some storage shelves and honestly couldn’t tell it was doing anything after a few weeks. Moved it to a higher spot on the opposite wall and noticed a difference within days. Could be coincidence, but I’d lean toward getting it off the floor if you can.

I get why you’d think height matters, but these things are pretty forgiving. I’ve got one sitting in a low outlet behind a bookcase and it still seems to do what it’s supposed to for that room. Honestly, walls and big furniture probably block more than the outlet height ever will.

Height probably matters less than what else is going on down there. If your basement has a lot of clutter, shelves, storage bins, or a drop ceiling, that stuff will eat up the signal no matter where you plug it in. A higher outlet won’t magically fix a crowded space. I would just make sure the area in front of it is fairly open and point it toward where you actually see pest activity. The 120 sq ft thing is optimistic, so if the basement is larger, one unit might not cut it and placement won’t save you. I would rather see someone buy two for the corners than obsess over whether the outlet is at waist height or floor level. Try the convenient spot first, give it a few weeks, and move it if you see no change. That is probably the most useful approach.

It’s interesting seeing everyone’s take on this. For me, the height thing wasn’t really the issue. I had mine plugged into an outlet near the floor in our unfinished part of the basement, right by the utility sink. It seemed to be working okay for a while, but then I noticed more spider activity than I was comfortable with, so I moved the unit to a higher outlet on the opposite wall just to change things up.

Honestly, I didn’t notice a huge difference in pest activity from the height change alone. What did seem to matter more was clearing out the area around it. We had a bunch of stacked boxes and old holiday decorations near the lower outlet, and once I moved those away from the wall, the coverage felt better. The sound waves probably had a clearer path.

If I were you, I’d just pick the outlet that’s most practical for your basement layout, but try to keep the immediate area around it somewhat clear. A basement is usually cluttered, so giving it a little breathing room probably does more than worrying about whether it’s high or low. I wouldn’t stress about getting a ladder to reach a high outlet unless that’s just where you have space.

I think lower outlets are probably fine most of the time, but I wouldn’t completely ignore the clutter factor. These things send sound waves out in a straight-ish line, so if you’ve got it down low and there’s a couch or a bunch of storage bins right in front of it, that’s going to block a lot of the coverage.

For me, the bigger issue was just making sure it wasn’t pointed at a solid wall. I had one in a spot where it was basically firing at the base of a staircase and I don’t think it did much until I moved it to an outlet that faced the open part of the room. Height seemed less important than what was directly in front of it.

If your basement is fairly open, I’d say just plug it in wherever and see. If it’s packed with stuff, maybe find a spot that’s not tucked behind everything, even if that means using a lower outlet. Probably worth testing for a few weeks before deciding it’s not working.

I’ve seen a lot of back and forth about this, but I think it’s more about the room itself than the outlet height. We had one in a laundry room that was pretty open and it did fine from a low plug. The basement might be trickier if you’ve got a lot of stuff stacked around, though. I’d just try it and see if you notice anything over a few weeks, then move it if you don’t.

I’ve had mine in a low outlet for months and it’s been fine. The basement isn’t super packed though, so there’s not much blocking the sound. I think if you’ve got open space down there, the height really doesn’t matter much.

Higher up probably gives it a cleaner shot across the room, but I wouldn’t overthink it. Basements usually have low ceilings anyway, so the difference between a floor outlet and one higher up is pretty small. I’d just make sure it’s not sitting directly behind a couch or a stack of boxes.

I feel like the height thing gets overblown. What actually made more of a difference for me was pointing it toward the area where I was seeing pests and making sure there wasn’t a couch or storage bins right in front of it. That seemed to matter way more than whether it was at floor level or near the ceiling.

If your basement is packed with stuff, I’d probably go higher just to get above some of the clutter. But if it’s fairly open, I wouldn’t stress about finding the perfect outlet. Just plug it in somewhere it’s not buried behind boxes and give it a few weeks to see if anything changes.

Good to know I’m not the only one who just plugged it in wherever. I’ll probably start with a lower outlet since it’s easier and see how it goes. If I don’t notice anything after a few weeks maybe I’ll move it. Thanks for the input everyone.
