Mine actually did better than I expected, and I say that as someone who thinks most of these range numbers are nonsense. I got the Dogitek back in March mainly for a stubborn rescue that bolts toward the driveway gate. My lot is about 150 feet deep, half of it wooded, plus a metal shed sitting right in the middle of the sightline. I figured the signal would die the second she went behind that shed.
It didn’t. She was down near the back fence, shed between us, and the beep and vibrate still went through. I know because she stopped and turned around, which she only does when the collar fires. I’ve since used it at that same distance maybe a dozen times and it’s been consistent, even with the trees. Not once has it cut out on me in the yard.
So for a normal backyard with some junk in the way, yeah, it seems to hold up. The 400m figure is still marketing garbage, nobody’s getting that with obstacles, but you don’t need 400m in a yard anyway. My honest take is the range anxiety on here is overblown. Whether yours behaves the same, no idea, but mine hasn’t given me a reason to complain yet.
It’s a screen, not a monitor. There’s nothing in it that can process a signal, so any delay you’re feeling is coming from your projector or your own head. I’d stop chasing the screen as the culprit.
Mine slid around on my 10 lb mix until I swapped it for a smaller strap. The tracker itself is the bulky part, not the collar, so “adjustable” only goes so far on a tiny neck.
The box contents are basically whatever the seller feels like putting in there that week. I bought mine off a listing that had the case right there in the main product photos, big old case sitting next to the camera, so I figured that was that. It showed up without one. No case, no mention of it being an add-on anywhere on the page. I had to go back and forth with the seller for about a week before they admitted it was sold separately on that particular listing.
So no, I wouldn’t trust the photos. Those main images are usually just stock shots the seller grabbed from somewhere, and half the time they don’t even match what actually ships. The only thing I’d go by is the actual box contents section at the bottom of the listing, and even then I’d screenshot it before paying in case you need to argue later.
For snorkeling specifically you do need the case, the camera itself isn’t going in the water without it. So if the listing is vague about it, just assume you’re buying one separately and factor that into the price. If it turns up in the box, fine, bonus. If not, you’re not stuck waiting on a return while your trip is coming up.
Mine actually did fine on car duty. The well pressure here isn’t much to brag about but the nozzle still put out a decent stream for rinsing soap off. It’s not going to strip dirt on its own, but I wasn’t scrubbing any more than usual.
No pouch, case, nothing. Mine came the same way, just loose in the box. For something meant to live in a car, that’s a dumb oversight. I ended up using a microfiber bag I had lying around, but you shouldn’t have to supply your own basic storage.
Height probably matters less than what else is going on down there. If your basement has a lot of clutter, shelves, storage bins, or a drop ceiling, that stuff will eat up the signal no matter where you plug it in. A higher outlet won’t magically fix a crowded space. I would just make sure the area in front of it is fairly open and point it toward where you actually see pest activity. The 120 sq ft thing is optimistic, so if the basement is larger, one unit might not cut it and placement won’t save you. I would rather see someone buy two for the corners than obsess over whether the outlet is at waist height or floor level. Try the convenient spot first, give it a few weeks, and move it if you see no change. That is probably the most useful approach.
Went on a road trip through the mountains last month and figured I’d test mine out rather than just trusting the marketing. We stopped at this overlook where my phone showed one bar of roaming at best, and honestly the Ryoko wasn’t much better. It connected, but the speed was basically useless. Could load a map if I waited forever, but streaming was a joke and even loading a simple webpage took ages.
The part nobody talks about enough is that it’s not doing anything special. It’s just picking whatever tower it can find, same as your phone. So if you’re in a spot where your phone struggles, this thing isn’t going to save you. The only real advantage I saw was that it seemed to hold onto a weak signal a little better than my phone did, so I got maybe a text out when my phone would’ve given up. But that’s about it.
People keep saying it’s not magic and they’re right. If you’re going somewhere with zero coverage, leave it at home. If you’re going somewhere where you might catch a faint signal here and there, it’s slightly better than nothing. That’s the whole story. I wouldn’t buy it expecting to be connected in the middle of nowhere, that’s for sure.
I would not expect a wall unit like this to completely undo a room that’s baking in direct afternoon sun. That’s a big ask for something that plugs into a normal outlet. I use mine in a west-facing office that gets hit hard around 4 PM, and it does take the worst of it off. The room stops feeling like a sauna, but I would not call it properly cool until the sun moves off the window.
For me, the wall mount is the whole point though. Keeps it out of the way and I do not have a fan or a floor unit tripping me up. If you are expecting it to make that room feel like a walk-in fridge during peak sun, you will probably be disappointed. If you just want it livable in there without melting, it can handle that.
I’ve been using mine with a heavy duty extension cord for a couple of months now because my outlet is behind a bookshelf. No issues at all. People act like these things are space heaters from the 90s that’ll melt anything they touch. It’s a small ceramic heater, not a construction site forced air unit. You’ll be fine.
The fit isn’t the issue. The real annoyance is having to remember to charge it and keep it clean. A dumb drugstore guard I can just rinse and toss in a case. This thing feels like another gadget I have to manage, and I already have enough of those.
Portable screens are handy until you actually hang them somewhere and see the fabric wrinkle or shift on you. My pull-down is a pain to mount too, but at least it stays flat once it’s up. The ScryneX might be convenient, but I would not expect it to beat a proper screen in a sunny room. Bright ambient light is still your real enemy.
It’s basically a personal cooler, not a room fan. If you push it too far away, you’re just getting a weak breeze and no real cooling. I’d keep it within arm’s reach and maybe angle it so it hits your face and chest instead of just blowing across the desk. That’s the only way I notice it doing anything useful.
I’ll be the odd one out here. I don’t think the window thing is the main issue. I’ve used mine in a room with a window and it still picked up maybe half the channels I expected. Placement mattered way less than the fact that my building is surrounded by taller ones on all sides. If you live somewhere with clear sightlines to the towers, a window probably helps. If you don’t, it won’t save you.
Honestly, I’d rather have a cable cord running across the floor to the one spot that works than rearrange my whole living room around an antenna. That’s just me though. I’m not moving my couch for free TV.
Mine fogs up too, but I also noticed it eventually gets a bit of grime in that same window. I think it’s just trapped moisture and whatever is in the tap water. As long as you’re not seeing mold or anything, it’s probably fine.
It’s not going to refuse to turn on or anything like that. You can still use it for viewing without an SD card, so for just walking around at night it’ll do what you need. The screen works fine on its own.
The thing people don’t always mention is that the menu or settings can be a bit annoying if you’re not saving anything. Some functions might gray out or just feel pointless when there’s no card in there, but the basic viewing mode works. It’s basically just like using a digital scope, you look through it and see the IR image.
I’d say grab a card eventually anyway, even a cheap small one, because once you do want to capture something you’ll have to stop and dig one out. But for your night walks, you can get by without it. Just be aware that the battery is the bigger thing to keep an eye on, using the IR constantly eats it up faster than you’d think.
Mine barely smelled at all until I ripped the pouch open, and even then it wasn’t exactly strong. People keep saying you can smell it through the packaging but I couldn’t get much from mine. I had to basically put my nose near it to notice anything.
Mine never really loosened much. It softened a little but the tightness in the morning stuck around until I just got used to it. If you’re waiting for it to feel loose, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
Cold water does give it a bit of a head start, but the difference is gone before you even finish settling in. I just use whatever comes out of the tap now. Way less hassle and the end result is basically the same.
If you can plug it in, it’ll work. OBD2 ports have been the same since the late 90s, so a 2008 is not an issue. Mine is older than yours and it connected without any hassle. The car just needs the port, the year doesn’t really matter.
