MemberI used to have one of those older cameras that came with a little handheld monitor, and I got really used to just glancing at the screen without touching my phone. Now with the SpyFocus I’m using the app for everything and it’s fine, but I keep wondering if I’m the only one who misses having a separate screen. The live view loads okay and motion alerts pop up, so no big complaints really. Just curious if anyone else came from a monitor setup and how long it took to stop reaching for a screen that isn’t there.

MemberI came from the same setup and it took me a few weeks to stop looking for that little screen. The app alerts are handy, but I still keep my phone on the counter when I’m cooking just so I can glance at it.

MemberThe phone thing never bothered me much, but the battery is what got old. Having a dedicated monitor meant that thing just sat there plugged in and ready. Now I have to think about charging the camera itself, and it dies faster than I expect when motion picks up a lot.

Nina_gadgetMemberI actually don’t miss the separate monitor as much as I thought I would, but my situation is a bit different. I only check the SpyFocus app when I’m already on my phone doing something else, so it doesn’t feel like an extra step. The part I had to adjust to was remembering to actually open the app instead of just glancing at a screen sitting on the counter. That took maybe a week or two before it felt normal. I still catch myself looking at the old spot on the shelf sometimes though. What I like better now is that I can check from upstairs or when I’m out, which the little handheld monitor never did for me. So I guess I traded the quick glance for more flexibility and I’m mostly fine with that.

MemberI skipped the monitor phase entirely, so the app feels normal to me. My sister has the old handheld setup though, and whenever I’m at her place I catch myself staring at the little screen instead of my phone. Different habits, I guess.

MemberI still keep the old handheld monitor on my kitchen counter even though the camera itself died months ago. Weird how that works. It just became part of the routine, you know? Glance over while making coffee, that sort of thing. The phone app is perfectly fine for checking in, but there’s something about having a screen that just sits there and doesn’t need unlocking or swiping. I don’t think it’s really about the app being worse, it’s more that the habit is baked in. For me it was less about missing the monitor and more about realizing I was checking my phone way more often than I ever checked that little screen. So in a way it kind of balanced out. I still reach for the monitor sometimes when I walk past it, which is silly since nothing shows up on it anymore.

Mike in TXMemberTook me about a month to quit glancing at the counter where the old monitor sat. What finally did it was moving the SpyFocus to a different room entirely, so there was nothing there to look for. Phone only now and I don’t think about it much.

Oliver BrooksMemberI’ve been comparing both setups lately since I’m still deciding what to buy. The dedicated monitor sounds easier for quick glances, but the app means fewer gadgets on the counter, so I get the tradeoff. I don’t think I’d miss the separate screen much once the alerts are working.

MemberNever had that problem, my old monitor was garbage anyway.

MemberI went the other direction and ditched the separate monitor years ago, so the app never felt weird to me. Grabbing my phone is just what I do for everything now. Never had that reaching-for-a-screen thing.

MemberI came from a baby monitor setup, so the whole glance-at-a-screen habit was strong for me too. What actually broke it was using the SpyFocus while I’m already holding my phone anyway, like checking alerts during lunch at work. The home screen thing never fully went away, but I stopped expecting a separate screen after a couple weeks.

pixelnomadParticipantI don’t really buy the idea that a separate monitor is inherently easier for quick glances. I get why it feels that way if you’re used to it, but once you actually count the steps, pulling up an app isn’t that much slower unless you’re fumbling with a locked phone every time. Notifications on the lock screen do most of that job anyway.
I’m still comparing setups myself and the dedicated screen thing keeps coming up in reviews, but it also means another device to charge, another thing to mount, and another screen that only works with that one camera. That tradeoff doesn’t get mentioned enough. The app route is less clutter and honestly more flexible if you ever add a second camera.
The habit part I can’t speak to since I haven’t owned either long term, but I’d be more worried about whether the app stays supported than about retraining my reflexes.

MemberI actually prefer the app over a dedicated monitor now. The old monitor meant I had to be within range of the receiver, but with my phone I can check the camera from anywhere. Sure, it’s an extra step to open the app, but the flexibility wins for me.

MemberI had a similar setup years ago with a cheap camera that came with its own little screen, and I do think there’s something nice about just looking over at it without unlocking anything. My routine back then was checking it while making coffee in the morning, super easy. With the app I still check just as often, but it’s more of a deliberate thing where I grab my phone and open it. What surprised me was that after a couple months I stopped noticing the difference. The screen was convenient but also another thing sitting on my counter collecting dust. Now my phone is already in my hand half the time anyway, so it blends into everything else I’m doing. I don’t really miss the monitor anymore, though I get why the habit sticks around for a while. It’s more about routine than the actual camera.

MemberI’m in the same boat as a buyer, not an owner yet, so I’m curious about this too. My parents have an old monitor setup and I keep wondering if switching to an app-only cam would annoy me. Watching this thread for people who actually made the jump.
28 de September de 2026 at 15:42 #13368Mike38
MemberTook me about a week to stop looking for the old screen.

MemberGood to know it wore off for some of you. I think my brain just got wired to that old screen after years of use, so it’s taking longer than expected. Either way the app is what I’ve got now, so I’ll stop waiting for a monitor to magically appear.
