Socks on is fine, it still works. I’ve used mine with thick socks plenty of times and never noticed a difference. The cord is the only thing that actually annoys me, it always ends up under my chair wheel.
The learning curve is the part I’d think about most. It’s not hard to get a line, but getting a *good* line takes a bit. I messed around with wood scraps for an evening before anything looked intentional. My preference is to practice on scrap leather first because it’s more forgiving and the tip glides easier than on harder stuff. Wood takes more patience since you have to go slower and the pen wants to wander if you rush. If you’re doing small projects like keychains or tags, you’ll probably get the hang of it faster than you expect. Just don’t judge it by your first few minutes. That said, I still think it’s more of a light hobby tool than something for serious detail work, so keep your expectations realistic there.
Putting it on a shelf worked for me but the picture was way less consistent than near glass. I’d rather deal with a cord running to the kitchen than have channels cutting out mid show.
Position really doesn’t matter. Mine is in a spot where it’s jammed at an angle behind the kick panel and I’ve never had an issue with it learning or staying put. It just reads the data it needs through the port, so orientation is irrelevant.
The battery backup isn’t just for the alarm noise, it keeps the sensors running. I had mine through a couple of outages and the unit kept monitoring the whole time. The screen does cut off pretty much right away, so you won’t be seeing any numbers, but that’s fine with me.
The way I see it, if the power’s out, I’m not sitting there staring at a CO reading anyway. What matters is whether the thing will still scream at me if there’s a problem while the electricity is down. Mine did what it was supposed to do. I think it lasted through a solid six or seven hour outage without any issue and never gave me a low battery warning afterward.
I wouldn’t expect it to run for days on end, but for the usual blackout where you’re just waiting for the power to come back, it does the job.
The beeps are just the end of cycle signal. Mine does the same thing every time it finishes and it’s been working fine for months now. I’d be more annoyed if it was silent and I had to keep checking on it.
The weight was never the issue for me. It’s the water setup that makes it feel awkward if you’re moving around a lot. If you’re just walking the yard pointing it at stuff, it’s fine. I would not want to carry it one-handed while also dragging a bucket around though.
I tried one for a couple months and honestly could never tell if it was doing anything beyond the physical comfort. The stress relief part felt more like a mindset thing, like I was expecting to relax so I did a bit. Never had it make a noticeable difference on a rough day though.
The “4K” part is just them slapping a label on it, but honestly the upscaling does more than I expected on my living room set. I’ve seen worse from dedicated upscaler boxes that cost more than this whole stick. It won’t fool anyone into thinking it’s a modern remaster, but it kills that harsh pixel shimmer you get on bigger screens. For the price, it’s a fair trade if you just want to plug in and play without obsessing over filters.
Mine came without a card, so yeah, you’re going to have to grab one before you head out. I picked up a spare 64GB and that’s been plenty for a day of clips. Just factor it into the price and you’re good.
Foam is the reaction working, not a show. The old hardware store powder I used was basically inert, sat there like sand, and did nothing for a slow drain. This stuff at least tells you it’s doing something. I’d rather see bubbles than nothing.
I’m curious about the same thing. One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is how the cover feels. If the foam is stiff at first, a slippery or rough cover can make it worse. Might be worth checking if you can wash it or if it softens up too.
If it’s still readable after it’s been running a while, I wouldn’t call it a problem. Moisture collects on the inside of those windows on basically anything with a water tank. Mine started doing it within the first week and it never got worse than just being a bit hazy. As long as you can tell where the line is, it’s fine.
I’d say the couch and bookshelf are probably not completely killing it, but I wouldn’t count on it being full strength behind solid stuff either. I had mine near a heavy curtain and a cabinet for a while, and I never really saw anything change until I moved it closer to the open floor. If you’re not seeing activity now, it might be worth just testing one spot without the furniture in the way before you go moving everything.
Storage only matters if you want to save photos or video. For just walking around at night, it works fine as a viewer. I wouldn’t let the missing card hold you up if that’s all you’re planning to do.
Different pattern on mine too, but I actually find it annoying. The short chirps are quiet enough that I’ve missed them from another room before. Old detector’s constant blast was easier to notice. Maybe that’s intentional, but I’d rather have the loud alarm right away.
I think there’s a difference between what it does around the light and what it does for your skin. I’d use it to keep the area near your tent or chair clear, but I wouldn’t skip the spray entirely. The barrier thing sounds good on paper, but I’d rather have the spray on me and use the light as a bonus.
I think the fence accuracy really depends on where you are. In open areas mine seemed pretty spot on, but around my house with trees and a metal roof it was noticeably slower to trigger. If you’re mostly in a clear neighborhood it’s probably fine, but don’t expect it to be perfect in every spot.
I bought mine expecting to fly with just the controller and it works, but you are basically guessing what the camera sees. I ended up using the phone more than I thought I would, mostly to frame shots before I take off. It is not a dealbreaker, just something to factor in.
Carpet is always going to mess with any scale, that’s not really a Herz thing. But the bigger thing is consistency. If you’re moving it between tile and carpet, you’re basically changing the setup every time, so of course the numbers are going to bounce around.
Tiled floor is fine, just make sure it’s not sitting on a grout line or anything. I keep mine in the hallway on hardwood and it’s been stable. I don’t think you need to overthink the surface as long as it’s firm and level. The carpet is probably just throwing off the initial weight reading before the sensors settle.
If you’re tracking trends, just pick one spot and stick with it. Use the same spot every morning and the data will make way more sense than chasing exact numbers on different floors.
I’m probably in the minority here, but I’d say the battery is fine for a day hike if you treat it like a camera, not a phone. I did a long coastal walk last month, maybe six hours, and shot maybe fifteen clips at 1080p plus a bunch of photos. I never once used the Wi-Fi and I kept the screen off unless I was framing a shot. Came back with about a third left.
The drain seems tied to how much you babysit the screen or keep the wireless on. I’ve had mine for a few months now and it’s pretty predictable. I don’t expect it to last forever if I’m recording constantly, but for grab-and-go stuff it holds up fine. I’d rather carry a small power bank anyway, just in case, but I haven’t needed it on a single-day trip yet.
