Hey everyone, I’m thinking about getting the Epicooler for my bedroom but I keep going back and forth on it. Since I’m renting, I can’t install anything permanent, and I just want something simple for summer nights and maybe a bit of warmth in winter. Does it actually do okay in a small room, or is it more of a spot cooler kind of thing? I’ve seen some mixed stuff online, so I’d love to hear from people who’ve used it a bit.

I skimmed through this and honestly it sounds like one of those things that works okay if you keep your expectations low. For a small bedroom in a rental it’s probably fine since you just plug it in and move on. I would not expect it to freeze you out or anything, but as a basic summer night thing it does the job.

I grabbed one mainly because my landlord won’t let me touch the walls either. It definitely does not cool the whole room like an AC, but if I sit close to it on the hottest nights it takes the edge off enough to sleep. I mostly use it for the heat in winter, which honestly feels stronger to me. For the price and the fact that I can just move it when I leave, I think it is fine.

If I were in your shoes I would not bother. Renters always think they need some gadget to survive the seasons and half the time it ends up in a closet by September. You already got a window and a fan, right? That covers summer. For winter just get a cheap space heater with a timer. Less money, less clutter, and you do not have to read another manual.

I got one for pretty much the same reason, no way I was drilling into my walls lol. It’s fine for my tiny bedroom, but it is the kind of thing you’re better off sitting close to. The heating side is what actually surprised me though.

I had one last summer and I think people expect too much from it. It’s not an AC replacement, but for a small bedroom it does take the edge off enough to sleep. I used mine mostly on the lower settings and it was fine for me. The heating side I never really tested much, so I can’t speak to that.

If you’re renting, I get it, but I’d still skip it. It’s just a fancy fan with a heater bolted on. It’ll take the edge off if you’re sitting right next to it, but the rest of the room will stay stuffy. Not worth the floor space.

It was fine for the first month, then it started sounding like a rattly desk fan every time the compressor kicked in. I wouldn’t call it whisper quiet, that’s for sure. For a rental it’s convenient, but don’t expect it to survive more than a couple of summers.

I’m in a rental too and honestly the no-installation thing is the biggest win for me. I move mine between my bedroom and living room depending on where I’m hanging out, and it does fine for one room at a time. Just don’t expect it to cool the whole place down if you leave the door open all day.

The “is it a spot cooler or a room cooler” thing is the right question to be asking. I had one in a guest room that’s maybe the size of a walk-in closet, and it handled it fine. But that room is tiny, and the door stays shut most of the time. When I moved it to my main bedroom to try it out, it was a totally different story. It just couldn’t keep up, especially on the warmer nights.

For heating though, it felt stronger to me. I used it more in the shoulder seasons than in deep summer, honestly.

If your bedroom is actually small and you’re not expecting arctic air, it’s probably fine for what you’re describing. Just don’t expect it to do much if the room gets any real sun during the day. That’s where I noticed it struggling the most.
