Mine takes up less room than I expected, but I mostly leave it in the house and just carry it out to the car when I need it. Stashing it in the glove box permanently would eat into space I actually use for actual glove box stuff.
A stone isn’t some magic upgrade you only pull out when the chain is trashed. I keep a small puck in my pocket and hit the cutters with it every time I fuel up, even if the chain feels fine. Files cut fast but they leave a slightly ragged edge that fades quicker for me. The stone takes a few more swipes but the edge holds way longer through dirty bark and pine knots. I’ve done full days bucking firewood with just the puck and never touched the file. So no, it’s not file for touch ups and stone for emergencies. It’s the other way around in my experience. The file is what I grab when I’m in a hurry or the chain is really far gone.
Mine has basically been a home gadget since I got it. I used the roaming once on a weekend trip, but otherwise it just sits by the window and kicks in when my wifi drops. The global stuff being unused doesn’t bug me at all.
I actually get decent use out of mine on my traps, like right where the shoulder meets the neck. Not so much directly on the shoulder cap though, that part never did much for me either. I usually run it while I’m still at my desk instead of after, and that seems to help more for some reason.
I mostly use mine on the front porch and car mats, never really thought about the keyboard angle. If I did try it I’d probably just aim it from the side so stuff flies off the keys instead of down between them. Dust has to go somewhere either way.
Mine actually stays red the whole time and never switches colors. I just pull it after about 90 minutes and it’s been flying fine for weeks, so relying on the light changing is kind of a waste of time.
I’ve got the version with the screen and I barely look at it while I’m actually moving, it’s more of a setup thing for me. The real difference is I stopped pulling my phone out every five minutes, which got old fast on my old cam. Bulk isn’t really the issue, it’s just one more thing to think about.
Moving it around is definitely not a waste of time, but I get why it feels that way when you’re standing there holding an antenna against a wall like an idiot. I’ve had my WaveMax for about six months and I’ve rescanned probably a dozen times in different spots. What I figured out is that it’s not really about finding some magic location that gets everything. It’s more like different spots pull in different groups of channels. Like one corner gets me the major networks but drops a couple of the smaller ones, and another spot flips that around. So you’re kind of trading one set for another instead of adding them all up. I ended up just picking the spot with the channels I actually watch and calling it done. Rescanning after every little move probably isn’t worth the hassle unless you’re really chasing something specific.
I had mine on a cheap strip for a while and honestly nothing seemed different, but I moved it to the wall just because the strip kept getting bumped. Not sure it actually matters either way.
I used mine pretty consistently every day for the first month, mostly on my shoulders and upper back after work, and nothing bad happened. Sessions were short though, like 15 minutes max, sometimes just one program and done. What I noticed is that using it daily didn’t really give me better results than using it every other day. The relief felt about the same either way. So now I just do it when I feel like I need it, which ends up being maybe 3 or 4 times a week. The daily thing isn’t overkill in terms of safety or anything, at least from my experience, but it also isn’t some magic boost. If your back is tight every single day then sure, go for it. But if you’re just doing it out of habit at some point, you’re probably not getting extra out of it.
I’ve had mine since spring and it does this little squeak when I turn the dial too slowly, like halfway between settings. If I just turn it straight to the pressure I want it doesn’t really do it. I think it’s just the way the dial moves inside, not a sign anything’s broken. Mine’s been doing it for months and still works the same as day one, so I stopped paying attention to it. The one thing I did notice is it gets louder if I haven’t used it in a while, kind of like it needs a few squeezes to settle back in. After that it’s fine. I use mine mostly for the car and some pots on the deck, nothing heavy, and it’s held up okay. So I’d say if it’s just a squeak when you adjust it, that seems pretty typical for these.
You can fly it with just the remote for basic stuff, that part is fine. But I’d argue the phone isn’t just for camera settings, since without the live view you’re basically guessing where you’re pointing, and that gets old fast. So I wouldn’t count on skipping it completely if you actually want to enjoy flying it.
I switched mostly because of how much time it saves me. I’ve got three kids and detailing my car on a Saturday is not happening anymore, so the spray and buff thing is a lifesaver for me. What I noticed is it handles the annoying stuff like scuffs from shopping carts or when someone brushes against your car in a parking lot. Those little marks that just sit on top of the clear coat pretty much wipe away. Where I got confused at first was expecting it to fix a scratch I could feel with my fingernail, and it didn’t do anything for that. But for what it is, I’m happy with it. I still keep the compound for the really bad stuff but I barely touch it now.
I’ve used mine on and off for maybe three months and mine doesn’t really clump much at all, so I’m not totally convinced this is just something the powder does no matter what. I keep mine in the laundry room on a shelf and it’s stayed pretty loose the whole time. Maybe a few tiny chunks here and there but nothing that makes measuring annoying.
The one thing I’ll say is I always press the bag closed really well and kind of squeeze the air out before I seal it. Not sure if that actually matters or if I just got lucky with my bag, but it’s the only thing I do differently from what people are describing. My sister used the same stuff and hers got clumpy fast, so who knows. Could be a batch thing too.
I don’t think clumping means it’s ruined though. If it still foams up then it’s doing its job. I’d probably just poke at it with a spoon before scooping if it gets bad. The only real downside for me is that once it starts clumping, the scoop doesn’t get an even amount and I end up using more than I meant to. That’s more of an annoyance than a real problem. Mine has never turned into a full brick so maybe I just haven’t hit that point yet.
If you’re thinking of it as something you’ll carry from room to room while it’s actually running, the cable is going to bug you. I borrowed one from a friend for a few days and that was the part that stuck with me. It cools fine at a desk where the cord just lives there, but the second I tried to move it somewhere without an outlet nearby it was basically dead weight. A power bank would sort that out but then you’re carrying two things, which kind of defeats the point of it being compact. So I’d say if most of your use is one spot, it’s fine. If you genuinely roam around a lot, that cable is the thing to think about before buying.
My mom actually does better with hers when she rests her hand on the table instead of holding it up in the air. Sounds obvious but it made a big difference for her. She still asks me to double check the thumbs though, those seem to give her more trouble than the rest.
I actually find the neck part more annoying than the shoulder bulk. Typing is fine but looking down at my keyboard gets awkward with it on.
I tried a pair during a two week trip in October and there was no subscription prompt at all, but I also never got live conversation mode to work right so maybe that’s where people are running into it. Mine just did the basic push to talk thing and that was fine for menus and taxis. I sent them back for other reasons though, the fit bugged my ears after an hour or so.
I got mine and the tips were already on it, but I ended up switching to a different one for leather anyway since the default felt a bit rough on it. Wood was fine though, no complaints there.
I ended up just going by feel after reading all this, and weirdly the one spot where I let it sit a bit longer came out better than the quick one. Not sure if that was the product or just me buffing harder the second time. Anyway, I’m calling it good enough for a driveway job.
Warm plugs aren’t automatically a red flag, they’re pretty common with anything drawing that kind of power from a wall outlet. Mine has run for hours in my craft room and the plug body stays cool, only the metal bits feel slightly warm if I actually poke at them. If the whole block ever gets hot to where you can’t hold it, that’s a different story.
I mostly sleep on my side and that shape actually fits me better than a normal pillow, so I get why the all positions thing gets said. But my own preference is a really soft pillow, and this one is a bit too firm for me some nights. I keep going back to it though, so I guess that says something.
I’m actually going to disagree a little. I don’t think it’s as gentle as they make it sound. I used mine a bunch when I first got it because it was so satisfying to watch scratches vanish, and I did notice the paint looking a bit less glossy in that one spot after a while. Nothing terrible, but enough that I switched back to just using polish and a microfiber towel for the most part.
The size honestly depends on how you’re planning to use it more than the actual weight. I’ve carried mine around the garden while moving between different spots and it’s manageable, but I wouldn’t want to hold it up at shoulder height for ages. It balances fine when you’re just walking with it though.
