I’m thinking about getting PolorVision for driving, mostly for daytime. Does it actually cut down on glare from the sun and bright roads? I don’t want to spend money if it’s not worth it. Anyone use it just for day driving?

I actually don’t think daytime is where these shine. I’ve had a pair for a few months and the sun glare reduction is pretty mild compared to just wearing regular sunglasses. Where they really made a difference for me was evening driving when the sun is low and bouncing off the windshield. For bright midday roads I’d probably just grab normal polarized sunglasses instead.

The sun glare thing is real but it’s more of a comfort thing than a safety thing for me. I borrowed my husband’s pair on a road trip and my eyes felt way less tired by the end. Still, don’t expect them to work like actual sunglasses.

Daytime glare is exactly what I bought mine for and I’m not impressed. They dim things a bit but calling it glare reduction is generous. A cheap pair of tinted sunglasses did basically the same thing for a third of the price, so I’d save your money unless you also drive at night.

The thing I can’t get past is that the “buy it or don’t” answer seems to depend on something nobody can really tell you in advance, which is how sensitive your eyes actually are to that flat, washed out brightness you get on a highway at noon. Some people genuinely don’t notice it and would be fine with nothing, other people get a headache after an hour and would pay almost anything.

My plan is to just borrow a pair for one long drive before spending anything. If I don’t feel a difference on a bright afternoon, that tells me more than ten reviews will. What I’d want to know from people here is whether the effect is obvious the first time or whether it’s one of those things you only notice after you stop using it. That’s the part that makes me hesitant, because if it’s subtle I’ll probably convince myself it’s working just because I paid for it.

Also curious whether anyone wears them over regular glasses, since that’s my situation and the fit seems like it could be annoying.

I picked up a pair mainly because my commute home faces the sun for about twenty minutes and it was starting to give me a headache by the time I got home. Not the blinding kind of glare where you can’t see, more just that constant low sun bouncing off the hood and the car in front of me. I wore them for a couple weeks and honestly the biggest difference wasn’t the sun itself, it was the dashboard reflection on the windshield. That annoying pale glow across the glass mostly went away, which I didn’t expect.

I still use the visor when it’s really bad, so it’s not some magic fix. But on normal bright days I notice my eyes feel less tired when I get out of the car, and I stopped squinting as much. That’s about the whole benefit for me. It’s a comfort thing more than anything.

As for whether it’s worth the money, I’d say it depends on how much time you spend driving into the sun. If it’s just the occasional errand, you probably won’t notice much. My drive is basically the same direction every evening so it added up for me. I don’t think it does anything crazy, it just takes the edge off.

My dad actually keeps a pair in his truck and I borrowed them for a week of errands last summer. What surprised me was how much they helped with that hot shimmer coming off the asphalt on the highway. I never really thought about that kind of glare until I drove with them, and then took them off at a light and went oh, that’s what was bugging my eyes. It wasn’t like everything got darker in a bad way either, it just felt calmer. I ended up getting my own after that, mostly for the drive to my sister’s place since it’s a straight shot into the sun for a good stretch. They live in my glovebox now. I actually had the opposite reaction to what a lot of people here seem to be saying. I borrowed a pair from my brother last fall for a two week stretch where I was driving my kid to early swim practice, so I was on the road around 7:15 every morning with the sun coming up right in front of me. I expected the glare thing to be the big deal but what actually got me was how much the contrast helped. Road markings and the edge of the lane just popped more, especially on that stretch of highway where the asphalt is really light colored and everything kind of washes out.

The sun in my eyes part was decent but not some dramatic fix. Like it took the edge off, sure, but I still squinted on the worst mornings. My brother swears by them though, he does a lot of highway driving for work and he won’t leave the house without them in the car. So I think a lot of it comes down to how sensitive you are and what your normal route looks like.

For me personally I’m still on the fence about buying my own pair. The contrast thing was the part I missed most after I gave them back, which I did not expect going in. If your main issue is just raw sun in your face at certain times of day, I’d say try a friend’s pair first if you can. Spending the money without knowing how your eyes handle it feels like a gamble.

I’ve had a pair in my car for about eight months now, and they’ve mostly become part of my normal routine. I don’t wear them every single time I drive, but I grab them whenever I know I’ll be out during the middle of the day, especially on the highway. What I noticed pretty early on was that they don’t make the sun less bright in some dramatic way. It’s more that the harsh washout you get on a long stretch of road is easier to deal with. My eyes don’t feel as worn out after an hour or two behind the wheel.

The thing that really sold me was a weekend trip last spring. I was driving back home around 3 in the afternoon, sun was sitting right in that spot where the visor doesn’t quite cover it, and the road had that bright sheen. I put them on and it was still sunny, still glaring in places, but I wasn’t squinting constantly or getting that dull headache behind my eyes. That was enough for me. I didn’t expect them to fix everything, and they don’t, but they take the edge off enough that I notice when I forget them.

So for daytime driving, I’d say they’re worth it if you deal with a lot of open road or a commute that lines up with the sun. If you mostly do short trips around town, you might not get as much out of them. That’s just my take from using them a few times a week.

They cut the sun glare for me, that part is real. I’ve been using mine on my morning drive for a few months and the difference on bright pavement is obvious. Worth the money if sun in your eyes is the actual problem.
