I keep seeing PestVault mentioned around here and I’m curious how it compares to the peppermint oil spray I used to get. Does the pouch smell last longer or is it pretty much the same idea? I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth switching before I grab some.

I switched from the spray to PestVault a while back, mostly because I got tired of having to reapply the peppermint stuff every couple of days. The pouches are way more set-and-forget for me. I just tuck one behind the fridge and another under the sink and I don’t really think about them until I get the reminder to swap them out.

The scent is a bit different though, I think. The spray was pretty sharp and minty, but the pouch smells softer, almost like a sachet. Doesn’t hit you in the face when you walk in, which I actually prefer.

I still use the spray occasionally for a quick blast around a crack or gap I notice, but for the regular day-to-day thing, I’d rather just drop a pouch and move on with my life.

I will say the spray has a more immediate kick when you first put it on. With the pouch it is more like a constant background thing. What surprised me is the scent difference. The spray smells like straight up peppermint oil when you put it on, which is fine, but the pouch smells a bit more… herbal? I guess? It’s still pleasant, not overpowering. I put one in my pantry and I could smell it faintly when I opened the door, but it wasn’t annoying. My wife noticed it too and she usually hates any kind of scent stuff.

I can’t really say if rodents are repelled more or less by one vs the other. I just know I see less signs of mice since I switched. Whether that’s the pouch or just that I’m actually keeping up with it because I don’t have to remember to spray, I don’t know. Probably a bit of both.

The only thing I’d say is the pouch does lose its scent quicker than I expected in the summer. I guess the heat just makes it fade faster. But I just swapped it out and it was fine. I’d rather do that than keep buying spray bottles anyway.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a huge deal either way. The spray works, but I got tired of the smell hanging around right after I applied it. The pouch is more low key. I just toss one in the back of the pantry and don’t think about it again until I happen to remember to swap it out a month later.

That being said, if you’re used to the spray and it’s doing the job, switching isn’t some massive upgrade. It’s the same idea, just in a different package. I grabbed a pack mostly because I was tired of buying refill bottles all the time. If you don’t mind the spraying routine, stick with what you know.

I’m not going to pretend one is dramatically better than the other. They both keep the mice out of my shed, and that’s all I really care about.

I never got why people are so hung up on the spray vs pouch thing. One’s a chore, the other isn’t. If you’re the type who actually remembers to reapply stuff, stick with what you got. If not, pouch wins by default.

I think the pouch just makes more sense if you’re not into keeping up with a spray routine. That said, if you already have a system and you’re happy with it, I wouldn’t rush to change. The pouch is a convenience thing, not a miracle product. I use them in the garage and under the sink, places where I don’t want to think about it. They’re fine for that. I still keep a bottle of spray around for when I see actual signs of activity, because the pouch is more of a background thing.

Good to know, sounds like the pouch is the lazy route and the spray is more of a hands-on thing. I’ll probably just stick with what I got for now, but I might grab one if I see it on sale.
