I wouldn’t count on it fully. I tried the offline mode once when I was in a dead zone and it worked for basic phrases but the app itself kept trying to connect anyway. For a hiking trip I’d probably download what you can and maybe have a backup translation app on your phone just in case.

I think the offline thing gets way more attention than it deserves, honestly. I’ve had these for a few months now and the only time I even bothered testing offline mode was out of curiosity in my basement. It handled a few basic phrases fine, but that’s not why I bought them. My main use is traveling through airports and city stuff where I always have signal anyway.

For a hiking trip specifically, I’d probably still bring them but I wouldn’t make them my only translation tool. The app needs your phone to do the heavy lifting, so even if the earbuds work offline, you’re still tied to whatever the phone has cached. And that’s the part people don’t always say out loud. It’s not like the earbuds themselves are some standalone device. They’re basically a microphone and speaker for your phone.

I guess my take is this: if you’re going somewhere with zero signal for days, maybe download a couple of phrasebook apps or screenshot some common sentences before you go. Translattia is great for real-time back and forth when you’re connected. When you’re not, it’s just another gadget taking up space in your pack. I wouldn’t rely on it for survival, but if you’re mostly on trails with occasional signal, you’ll probably be fine.
