MemberI still have my old pocket phrasebook from years ago. The Qinux Talkbuds seem like they’d replace it, but I’m not convinced they’re faster. Does the translation actually keep up in a normal back and forth, or do you end up waiting for it to catch up? I don’t need it for anything critical, just basic travel stuff. Not expecting miracles, but if it’s slower than flipping pages then what’s the point.

MemberI used a pocket phrasebook for years and switched to earbuds last spring. For me the real difference is my hands stay free. I can hold a menu or point at something while the translation plays, which you obviously can’t do while flipping pages. Speed is fine for short back and forth, maybe a beat behind, but not painful. Where it gets old is longer sentences, since the app sometimes rephrases things in a way that loses the tone. My preference is still paper for anything with numbers or directions, because I can just show the page and be done. The earbuds win for quick greetings and ordering. If you mostly do basic travel stuff they’ll probably do the job, just don’t expect a clean flow in every chat.

MemberI actually find the phrasebook faster in some situations, no joke. If I already know roughly what I want to say, flipping to a page beats fiddling with an app and waiting on a connection. The earbuds win for hearing replies back, but for quick stuff I still grab the book sometimes.

MemberThe delay thing gets blown out of proportion. I used mine on a trip in February, four days of moving between cities, and it kept up fine for basic stuff. Ordering food, asking where the bathroom is, directions to a train platform. That kind of thing worked without me standing there like an idiot waiting for a robot to finish thinking.
Where people get tripped up is expecting it to handle a fast conversation between three people at once. That is not what this is. But for the actual back and forth you do as a tourist, short question, short answer, it moves quicker than I expected. Definitely quicker than me trying to find the right page in a phrasebook while someone waits on me.
The bigger difference I noticed is that it handles the stuff you did not plan for. A phrasebook only has what somebody decided to print. When a waiter asked me something that was not in any of my old books, I would have been stuck pointing at random words. With the earbuds I just got a translation and moved on.
Battery lasted me a full day out, though I charged it every night out of habit. Setup was a bit fiddly the first time, but after that I just opened the app and picked languages. Not saying it replaces actually learning anything, but for basic travel it does the job.

techguy22ParticipantBiggest difference for me was not needing to guess the spelling just to look something up. You speak, it spits out the other language, done. The pause is there, half a second maybe, but I stopped noticing after the first day.

LunaMemberI still keep a tiny notebook with phrases in it because I like writing things down when I’m somewhere loud and can’t hear myself think. The earbuds are quicker for me when I actually need a back and forth, but I don’t think they’re replacing that habit anytime soon. Different tools, different moods I guess.

MemberA phrasebook never runs out of battery or needs an app. That alone keeps mine in the bag. The buds might keep up in a slow chat, but once the phone dies or the connection drops you’re standing there with nothing.

Tom BriggsMemberI kept my phrasebook in the bag even after getting the buds. For quick stuff like asking where the bathroom is, I still reach for the book. But for anything where I need to actually say a sentence, the buds win because I don’t have to point at a page.

LauTopMemberMine handled a slow back and forth fine, but the moment two people talk over each other it gets messy. For basic travel stuff I still think it’s quicker than flipping pages once you’re used to it. Just don’t expect it to keep up with fast chatter.

MemberI actually found the opposite of what most people here are saying, at least for my own habits. Borrowed a set from a friend for a two week trip through Portugal and Spain earlier this year, and the translation itself was fine. Where it fell apart was me. I kept pulling the phone out to check the app, second guessing the language selection, making sure it was actually listening. That’s three or four small steps before anyone says anything, and it added up in a way flipping to a marked page never did.
A phrasebook has a huge advantage nobody mentions. You can glance at it while someone is still talking. I’d have the page open before the other person even finished their sentence, so there was zero dead air. With the buds I was always one beat behind, waiting for the little pause to end, then waiting for my own brain to trust the output.
My preference is simple. I want something that doesn’t need my hands or my attention between turns. The buds want both. Maybe that’s a me problem, but it’s the reason I never bought my own pair after that trip.
The one thing I’d genuinely miss from the buds is not having to spell anything. I’m terrible at guessing how words are written in languages I don’t speak, so half my phrasebook lookups were dead ends anyway. So it’s a trade. Speed of access versus speed of use, and I still lean toward paper for short exchanges.

MemberFor basic travel stuff I think the buds do fine. My wife and I passed one earbud back and forth in a taxi and it kept up with a normal chat, no awkward pauses. The phrasebook only beats it when there’s zero signal, but I haven’t run into that yet.

MemberA friend showed me his set on a trip and the lag was noticeable but not painful. Maybe a second behind on simple stuff, which is still quicker than me butchering a phrase and watching a waiter squint at me. For basic travel I’d say it edges out the book, just don’t expect a real conversation.

MemberA phrasebook still wins on one thing nobody mentions: you can hand it to the other person and they can point at a reply. The buds can’t do that. You’re stuck holding a phone screen between two faces and hoping the other person doesn’t feel weird about it. I watched a couple try that in a train station and it looked more awkward than just showing a book. Speed isn’t the whole argument. If the back and forth is a normal chat, the buds are fine, but the second it turns into a three person thing or someone wants to write something down, the book is less hassle. You don’t need a subscription or a charged case to open a page either. That’s not nostalgia, it’s just fewer moving parts.

MemberAlright, I’ll stick with the book for now then.
