Mine came with a spare cartridge so I just marked the date on my phone to swap it. Two weeks isn’t much time to judge, but the cartridge itself is the part doing the work, so keeping up with that probably matters more than the head.

I look at whether the brand still sells bare batteries on their own, not just in kits with a tool. My dad’s old brand stopped selling the loose packs first, and the kits dried up not long after. That’s been my simple test since.

I wouldn’t bother if the loose cable is the only issue. A hardwire kit can still draw a little power even in parking mode, and that was enough of a reason for me to leave mine on the lighter plug. Not worth the extra fuss unless you really want the parked recording.

I mostly ignore the daily totals and just look at the weekly trend. A single weird day doesn’t tell me much, but if the activity stays low for several days in a row I’ll pay attention. The specific number matters less than the pattern.
