Is it worth upgrading from a plug-in dash cam to a hardwired one?

I currently have a basic dash cam that plugs into the cigarette lighter, but I’m tired of the cable hanging around. I’ve read a bit about hardwiring and battery packs, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the upgrade. My main worry is the battery drain when parked. Has anyone made the switch and found it made a difference? I don’t want to overcomplicate things if it’s not necessary.

The dangling cable never bothered me much, so that alone wouldn’t sell me on it. I did go hardwired mainly so it just turns on with the car and I stop forgetting to plug it in. Battery drain hasn’t been a thing for me in normal daily driving.

Parking mode is what makes hardwiring actually useful, not just hiding the cable. Mine records when someone gets close to the car and I’ve caught a couple of door ding attempts that way. The drain concern is fair though, I just set a cutoff so it shuts off after a day or so.

The battery drain thing gets overstated if you ask me. Mine’s been wired in for about eight months and the car still starts fine every morning, even after sitting for a week while I was away. I never bothered with a battery pack and haven’t needed one.

Hardwiring is worth it for the clean install alone in my opinion. I had the same dangling cable annoyance and it drove me nuts. The parking stuff is a bonus, but the tidy setup was the real win for me.

I did the swap mainly because I wanted the camera to just come on and off with the car, and that part has been nice. But I get the battery drain question. What convinced me to try it was talking to a shop that installs these, and they said the way they wire it, it cuts off at a set voltage so the car still starts. That was the part I cared about, not the cable. A few months in and it’s been fine, starts every time. I can’t say it’s been a huge upgrade beyond the tidy install though. If the dangling cable is your only real gripe, hardwiring fixes that but it’s not some night and day change otherwise. The parking recording is a bonus but I haven’t leaned on it much.

I wouldn’t bother if the loose cable is the only issue. A hardwire kit can still draw a little power even in parking mode, and that was enough of a reason for me to leave mine on the lighter plug. Not worth the extra fuss unless you really want the parked recording.

I went the battery pack route instead of hardwiring and have zero regrets. It charges while I drive and keeps recording when I’m parked, but there’s no permanent connection to the car at all. After a year of this I’ve never had a dead battery, and I’d make the same choice again.

Not worth it just to hide a cable. I hardwired mine for the clean look and ended up yanking the kit out after a few months because the camera kept running when it shouldn’t. Unless you actually need parked recording, the plug is fine.

Still just a cable with extra steps.

I switched mine for the same reason, mostly the cable, and the parking mode was a bonus I barely use. I wouldn’t upgrade just for battery drain worry since you can turn parking off if it acts up. If the dangling cord really bothers you, it’s a small change.

Mine drained the battery twice, so no.

I went from a plug-in to a hardwired setup and for me the difference was bigger than just tidying up the cable. The main thing was that the camera actually stayed put during the day instead of flopping around, and I ended up recording way more because I wasn’t messing with it every time I got in. The parking stuff barely registers for me though, I don’t leave it running overnight much so I haven’t seen any obvious battery trouble. It’s been a few months and the car starts fine every morning. I get that people worry about drain but in my case it just hasn’t shown up. If you’re mainly annoyed by the cable and want the thing to feel like part of the car, it’s a decent little upgrade. If you’re only doing it for parking recording I’d probably skip it.

I’ve had mine hardwired for about a year and honestly the cable thing bugged me way less than I expected once it was gone. But if hiding the cord is your only reason, a decent cable clip does the same job for basically nothing. The parking stuff is where it actually gets worth thinking about.

I’m not really into parking mode stuff, so the hardwire thing only appeals to me for the tidy install. Having the cable tucked into the trim instead of dangling by the shifter is what would seal it for me.

The tidier look alone made it feel worth it to me. I had a cable flopping near the gear stick for ages and it drove me nuts, so having nothing visible was a small daily win. I can’t really comment on the parked drain side since I didn’t set that up.

I kept my plug-in setup and just ran the cable along the headliner and down the pillar, took maybe ten minutes and cost nothing. The parking drain thing is the reason I never bothered with hardwiring, since I don’t need it recording while I’m parked anyway.

I swapped mine mainly because I kept knocking the plug loose with my knee getting in and out. The hardwire solved that and the parking drain hasn’t been an issue for me so far. It’s a bit more work up front, but nothing crazy.

Battery drain depends on the car, but the tidy install is nice.

Hardwiring didn’t really change my parked battery situation at all, since the cam still cuts off with the ignition. So if that’s your main worry, the drain thing mostly comes down to how the parking mode is set up, not the wiring itself. The cable cleanup was nice but I wouldn’t call it a big upgrade.

Swapped mine last year and it’s been a solid upgrade for me. The install takes a bit of patience but once it’s in you basically forget it’s there. Battery’s been fine, my setup only runs while the car’s on anyway.

I’d rather deal with a loose cable than fuss with wiring for a view I rarely check.

Mine’s been hardwired for about a year and I’d do it again.
