MemberThinking about picking up a SpyFocus for monitoring the living room at night. Is the IR good enough to cover a medium-sized room clearly, or does it get blurry past a few feet? Don’t need pro quality, just want to see if the dog is on the couch.

Paul847ParticipantI just put mine on a shelf across the room and it’s fine for seeing if the dog moved. Not super sharp at the edges but good enough to tell what’s going on.

Ben KerrMemberIt should be fine for that. I use mine to check on my living room from bed and can make out the couch and table clearly enough. The edges get a little soft but the center is sharp. Probably good enough for what you need.

MemberNot really sure what everyone else is seeing. I tried one and the night vision was pretty weak past like 6 feet.

MemberI just have mine aimed at the couch from about 10 feet away and the IR picks up the outline of my cat just fine. It’s not going to be crisp enough to read a book cover or anything, but you’ll definitely see if the dog is up there or not.

Noah KentMemberIt’s fine for a medium room. I’ve got mine pointed at a chair from maybe 12 feet away and it’s clear enough to tell if someone is sitting there. People expecting cinema quality from a tiny camera are missing the point. Just set it up and see if it works for your couch, it probably will.

MemberI’ve got mine in a similar size room and honestly it’s been fine for that. The IR isn’t going to blow you away but I can definitely tell if my dog is on the sofa or not.

MemberI’d say it’s probably fine for that. The IR isn’t super crisp across the whole room but it’s clear enough to spot movement or see if something’s on the couch.
29 de June de 2026 at 22:00 #4161
KhanMemberHonestly, I think it’ll work for what you’re describing. The IR isn’t amazing but it’s not useless either. I can see enough to tell if there’s movement on my sofa from across the room. Probably not gonna give you crystal clear detail but for spotting a dog it should be fine.

MemberPretty sure it’ll show you if the dog is on the couch. Mine picks up shapes and movement fine across a normal living room, but don’t expect to see what color the dog is.

MemberProbably fine for that. I wouldn’t expect crystal clear detail across the whole room but it should show you if something is on the couch.

MemberI’d say you’re probably overthinking it. It’ll show you if the dog is on the couch fine.
30 de June de 2026 at 07:37 #4176
JSmithParticipantProbably fine for that. The IR range isn’t huge but it should pick up stuff on a couch no problem.
30 de June de 2026 at 08:33 #4179
Owen21MemberNot really sure why everyone’s saying it’s fine. Mine struggled to show anything clearly past like six feet in a dim room. Maybe your couch is closer than mine.

MemberI skimmed through the replies and honestly you’ll probably be fine if the couch isn’t way across the room. The IR isn’t amazing but for spotting a dog on furniture it should do the job. I’d just try it and see, worst case you move it closer.
30 de June de 2026 at 10:23 #4185
Luis_A91MemberI mean, you’re basically just trying to see if a dog is on a couch, not reading license plates. It’ll do that.
30 de June de 2026 at 11:16 #4188
Laura CheckMemberI set mine up facing the couch from about 8 feet away and it’s been fine for seeing if my cat is up there. Not super crisp but definitely visible.
30 de June de 2026 at 11:46 #4190Kuzela
MemberMine’s been okay. I just have it pointed at the couch from across the room and I can tell if the dog’s up there. Not the clearest image, but it’s good enough for that.

MemberI set mine up in a medium sized living room and it’s totally fine for that. I can clearly see my cat jump on the couch from about 10 feet away, it’s not super crisp but you can definitely tell if something is there. I wouldn’t stress about it.

Mike ReynoldsMemberNot totally sure what everyone’s complaining about, honestly. I’ve got mine pointed at the couch from maybe 10 feet away and it’s clear enough to see if my dog is up there or not. Not exactly cinema quality but for that, it’s fine.
30 de June de 2026 at 13:06 #4196Jamie Kell
MemberGood to know. Seems like the general take is that it’ll work for couch checks, which is basically all I need. Preciate the input, I’ll grab one.
31 de July de 2026 at 12:52 #6191
Susan KennetMemberHonestly, I think it depends on what you mean by “clearly.” If you’re expecting to see the dog’s face and read its mood, you might be disappointed. But if you just need to see a shape on the couch and tell if it’s moving, it’s fine.
I’ve had mine for a few weeks now and the IR does okay in my living room. It’s not a huge space, maybe average sized, and I’ve got it on a shelf pointing toward the general seating area. From across the room, I can tell if someone’s there and whether they’re moving around. It gets a bit soft if you zoom in too much, but for a quick check on the app, it’s totally serviceable.
I wouldn’t rely on it to identify who’s on the couch, but for a dog? You’ll see a lump and maybe a tail wag if they’re awake. That’s probably enough for what you’re asking.
