SpyFocus app on older Android phones?

Quick question. I’m thinking about getting a SpyFocus but my daily phone is a pretty old Android. Does the app still run okay on older versions? I don’t want to buy it and then find out I can’t even set it up. Anyone using it on a phone that’s a few years old? Just wondering if it’s worth trying or if I should expect issues.

Old Android is a coin flip with these cheap cam apps. I had one that worked fine on a 3 year old phone and another brand that just refused to install because the app store said it wasn’t compatible. If I were you I’d check the app listing first before buying anything. If it doesn’t show up for your device then you already have your answer. Some of these companies also drop support for older versions pretty fast so even if it installs today it might stop working after an update. I’d look for something with a basic browser option or at least confirm the minimum Android version in writing. Otherwise you’re gambling on it.

The app itself ran fine on my old Android, but the setup is where things got annoying. If your phone is really old, check the OS version against the app store listing before buying.

You might actually be fine. My spare phone is a Moto G6 from 2018 and the SpyFocus app installed and connected without any trouble. Live view was a little choppy on Wi-Fi but it worked.

Older Androids are hit or miss with these camera apps in my experience. I tried running a similar mini cam app on a 2017 Samsung and it flat out refused to install. Check the required Android version before you buy anything.

My old Pixel 3 still runs it no problem and that thing is ancient at this point. Setup was quick too, didn’t have to mess with anything weird. Only thing is the video gets a little choppy sometimes but that’s probably just my wifi.

Old Android is the exact reason I gave up on mine. App installed fine but would randomly drop the connection every day or two, and reconnecting meant digging through menus. Not worth the hassle if your phone’s your only control device.

I’d just look up the Android version the app needs and compare it to what your phone is running before buying anything. That’s the one thing that’ll actually tell you if it’s a no-go. If your phone’s too far behind, no amount of hoping will make it install.

Depends what “older” means. I tried a similar app on a hand-me-down that was stuck on Android 8 and it just refused to install at all, no error, nothing. If your phone is newer than that you’re probably fine, but I wouldn’t buy anything before checking the store listing on the actual phone first.

My hand-me-down LG from around 2019 handled it fine, app opened and the feed came through without me having to fiddle with settings. Took a couple minutes to pair but that was it. I’ve only been using it a few weeks though, so no clue how it holds up long term.

Older phones are actually the sweet spot for this app. My backup Moto from 2016 runs SpyFocus smoother than my new phone does, no lag on the feed at all. Newer Android versions cause more issues from what I’ve seen.

No clue about specific versions, but I had it on a phone from like 2018 and setup went through without any fuss. Streamed fine too, only thing was the battery drain, though that’s probably the same on any phone.

If the app store listing says it needs a newer Android than what you’re running, that’s pretty much the end of it. Older phones can be hit or miss depending on the exact version. I’d check that before buying anything.

Ran fine on my old phone, just needed wifi.

Age of the phone matters less than what version of Android it’s stuck on. I had a cheap tablet from 2020 sitting on Android 9 and the app installed fine but the live feed was a slideshow. Same app on a 2017 phone running Android 11 actually worked better, so it’s not really about how old the hardware is. It’s about whether the OS is current enough for the app store to even hand it to you. Check what version you’re running first, that tells you more than the year on the box. Mine technically opened but I wouldn’t call it usable for anything beyond a quick peek.
