I’ve been using an old pull-down screen for years and it’s fine but a pain to set up. Looking at the Qinux ScryneX since it’s portable, but I’m wondering how it handles a bright living room during the day. My old screen has a bit of a gray tint that helps with contrast. Is the ScryneX material any good for that, or is it basically just a white sheet?

I swapped my old pull-down for a ScryneX a few months back and daylight performance is honestly the one area where I was a little let down. It’s not a gray-tinted screen, so you do lose some of that contrast in a bright room. With the curtains closed and a decent projector it’s fine, but if you’re used to that gray screen look, this will feel closer to a bright white surface.

I swapped mine in for a cheap pull-down that I kept in the garage for movie nights and honestly, the ScryneX handles daylight better than I thought it would. Not because it’s some magic gray material or anything, but it’s not just a plain white sheet either. The surface has a bit more structure to it, if that makes sense. It doesn’t wash out as fast as my old screen did when the sun hit the side of the room.

I was worried about the same thing since my living room has big windows and I don’t have curtains that fully block light. I’d say as long as you’re not pointing the projector straight at a window, you get a decent picture. The gray tint on my old screen gave it a slight edge with contrast, but the ScryneX makes up for it with how evenly the light spreads. I don’t get those hot spots or dim corners like I used to.

It’s not going to look like a TV in the middle of the afternoon, but if you’re comparing it to a pull-down that’s been through a few years of use, it’s a clear step up. Plus not having to deal with the hooks and the rolling mechanism every time I want to watch something is a win on its own. I just hang it up and go.

It really depends what you’re comparing it to. My old pull-down had that grayish backing too, and the ScryneX is definitely brighter/whiter in comparison. I wouldn’t call it a plain white sheet, but it doesn’t have that same contrast-boosting tint, so daytime viewing in a bright room will wash out a bit more. For a living room with windows, I’d keep expectations realistic.

I get the gray tint thing. My pull-down in the basement has it and it does help when the lights are on. The ScryneX isn’t that kind of material, it’s much more of a straight white surface. In a bright living room you will see the difference, especially if your projector isn’t super bright. It’s fine for darker rooms though.

It’s a tradeoff, but I’d take the easy setup over the gray tint any day.

Grey backing only does so much once sunlight hits the room. You might lose contrast either way unless you block the windows. The ScryneX is fine for what it is, but don’t expect some magic fabric that beats physics. Portable and convenient, sure, but I wouldnt dump the old screen yet.

I wouldn’t overthink the gray tint thing. Those screens do help a bit with ambient light, but once you actually start using the ScryneX you realize the material is doing more work than a plain white sheet would. It’s got some structure to it, not just flimsy fabric.

I run mine in a room with a big sliding door that gets direct afternoon sun. I close the curtains halfway and it’s perfectly watchable. Not pitch black cinema level, but you’re not squinting or losing the whole image either. Colors stay decent and I don’t get that washed out look I expected.

The portability is the bigger win for me though. I hung mine on a couple of hooks and take it down when I don’t need it. No more dragging a heavy case out of storage. For the daytime question, I’d say it holds up fine unless you’ve got sunlight beaming straight onto the screen. Curtains or blinds will do the rest.

I keep coming back to the same thought whenever this screen comes up: people expect it to be a magic fix for daylight, but it is still a screen, not a blackout curtain. The material is fine for what it is, but if your room is bright, you are going to be fighting that no matter what you hang up. My old pull-down was a pain too, so I get the appeal.

Portable screens are handy until you actually hang them somewhere and see the fabric wrinkle or shift on you. My pull-down is a pain to mount too, but at least it stays flat once it’s up. The ScryneX might be convenient, but I would not expect it to beat a proper screen in a sunny room. Bright ambient light is still your real enemy.

I got one to use in my garage where there’s a window that gets blasted with afternoon sun, and honestly my old screen was worse in that spot. The ScryneX holds up better than I expected for how thin it feels. It’s still not magic, but I don’t miss wrestling with the pull-down setup.
