I’ve been using an old battery lantern for years and it’s fine, but I keep seeing these combo light and repellent things. The MozzDefense looks like it could replace both my lantern and the citronella candle I usually bring. I’m not expecting it to keep every mosquito away, but does the light part work well enough for reading in a tent? Just trying to figure out if it’s worth switching from my current setup.

The light is fine for reading in a tent. I’ve used mine on the low warm setting and it’s plenty. The repellent part is the gimmick, don’t buy it expecting that to do much. If you just want a lantern that’s easier to pack, sure.

I’ve been going back and forth on this exact thing since spring. My current lantern is one of those big D-cell ones that weighs a ton, so the idea of something pocket sized that also handles the bug side is tempting. But I keep tripping on the repellent part. From what I can tell, the light is the solid half of the package, and the mosquito thing is more of a bonus that people either swear by or shrug at. So if you mainly need tent light for reading and the repellent is just a nice extra, it could still be a decent swap, especially with the rechargeable battery. If you are counting on it to actually replace your citronella setup, that is where I would slow down. I’m leaning toward trying one for the light and keeping my old candle around as backup, since that way I’m not betting the whole trip on the gimmick side.

I picked one up mostly for the light and it’s been handy on weekend trips. The battery easily lasts a couple nights on the lower setting, which is more than I can say for my old one that ate D cells. I still bring a separate repellent though, since I don’t fully trust that part.

I went the opposite direction last summer and swapped my combo gadget back to a plain old lantern plus a separate little fan, mostly because of how the light actually felt in the tent. The combo one I had sounded great on paper, light and repellent in one thing, but reading by it got old fast. It threw this narrow beam that was fine pointed at a book but the rest of the tent stayed dim, so I was constantly tilting the thing to get the page lit right. My cheap lantern just fills the whole space evenly and I never think about it.

The repellent side, I honestly stopped counting on it after the second trip. First night it seemed okay, second night the bugs came right back in through the door anyway, which kind of told me what I needed to know. I still brought a candle after that. Not saying the MozzDefense is bad, I never tried that exact one, but the whole two in one idea lost its shine for me once I noticed I was babysitting the light more than enjoying the trip.

So I’d say if reading comfortably is the main thing, your old lantern is probably still doing more for you than you realize. The switching cost might not be worth it unless you really hate carrying two items.

Old school lantern still wins for me. The light on these combo things is okay but I never found it great for reading, kinda dim once it’s hanging up in a tent. I’d keep the lantern and grab a cheap mosquito coil separately.

I grabbed one mostly because my old lantern kept dying on the second night, and this thing actually holds up. The light is decent for hanging in the tent, I can read without squinting. The mosquito side I can’t really confirm either way, but as a lantern it’s been solid for me.

The light part is fine for reading if you hang it close, but mine dims quicker than I’d like on the bright setting. I still bring a real repellent because the mosquito mode did basically nothing for me.

For reading in a tent I’d still grab a proper lantern. Mine lives in my carry on and the light is fine for finding stuff in a hotel room, but curled up with a book it felt like too much work. The repellent side never really did anything for me either.

Reading in a tent is mostly about having a light you can point down at the pages, and combo lights usually hang and glare right in your eyes. My old lantern has a reflector that pushes light where I need it, which matters more than the extra features. If you mostly read before bed, I’d keep the lantern and use the combo purely for the mosquito side.

I keep mine clipped to the gear loft and it’s fine for reading a few pages before bed. Not as bright as a real lantern but it’s one less thing to pack, which matters more to me. The repellent part I can’t really vouch for, but the light alone made it worth keeping in my bag.

For reading in a tent I’d honestly just keep the old lantern. The combo thing is handy but it’s more of a mood light than a proper reading light in my experience.

Switching from a lantern to a combo light sounds smart until you actually try it. I brought one of those last summer and went back to my old battery lantern after two trips. The light is fine for hanging around the campsite, but inside a tent it’s got this weird spread where it lights up the walls more than anything else. I ended up holding it right above my book half the time, which kinda defeats the point. My old lantern sits on the floor and throws light up where I need it. The repellent part is a nice bonus but I still got bit a few times, so I wouldn’t count on it replacing your citronella candle either. If you want one gadget for everything it’ll do the job, but if reading is your main thing at night, your current setup probably isn’t broken enough to fix.

I’d probably keep the old lantern and grab a separate repellent if bugs are really the concern. The combo light thing sounds neat in theory, but I’ve watched a couple friends mess with those all-in-one gizmos and they always end up fiddling with settings instead of just chilling. For actual tent reading you want something dead simple that just turns on and stays on, not a device with five modes you’re cycling through in the dark. The repellent side of these things is the part I’d trust least anyway. I’ve never had great luck with those chemical-free claims. Give me a Thermacell or some spray and call it done. The light itself might be fine, sure, but you’re paying extra for a feature that may not even do much. If your current lantern already works and you like it, swapping to a combo unit just adds moving parts to your setup. That’s my take anyway.
