I’ve been using the MozzDefense for a few weeks now, mainly as a camping light, and I’m happy with it for that. But I’m still not sure about the mosquito repellent part. It seems to keep some bugs away from the area, but I’ve still gotten bites when I’m sitting a bit further off. Anyone else notice the same thing, or is it just me expecting too much from the “invisible barrier” claim?

The “invisible barrier” claim is way too optimistic. I think a lot of these ultrasonic gadgets work on the bugs dumb enough to fly right into the light zone, but they don’t actually repel anything across a distance. Expecting it to protect you 10 meters away is just not realistic.

I would just treat it as a light and bring backup repellent. I use mine on the patio and it keeps the space around the lamp pretty calm, but I wouldn’t trust it to guard the whole yard. If I’m sitting a few meters off, I’m still spraying myself. It’s a great lamp, but I don’t think it’s meant to be your only line of defense.

I found that the repellent part works best when you stay within a few meters of the light. It is not some bubble that covers the whole campsite, that’s for sure. I had mine hanging near my chair and that area was fine, but walk past the cooler and it was like the thing did not exist. It does the job for the immediate zone, nothing more.

I think the distance thing is the part that trips people up. I would say expecting it to handle the whole area is asking too much, it seems more like a local thing. I have had the same experience where the zone right around the light is fine but I still get bothered if I wander off to the edge of the camp. It is a decent light, but I would not rely on it as my only protection.

I kind of like mine for what it is. The light is nice and warm, and I noticed the bugs do seem to stay away from the immediate area where I set it up. But I would never rely on it alone if I was sitting far away. It feels more like a bonus feature than the main reason to buy it.

It is kind of funny reading this because my experience has been the opposite. I hang mine near where I sit on the deck and I honestly have not had a single bite since I started using it, even when I am a few chairs away from the light. Maybe I just got lucky with the placement, but I really do think the barrier claim holds up better than people give it credit for.

The 10 to 50 meter claim is a bit ambitious from what I can tell. I had mine on a picnic table and the bugs backed off maybe a few feet around it, but anything past that was fair game. Seems like a decent light with a small zone of effect rather than an actual barrier.

I just use mine as a lantern honestly. The bug thing is a bonus if I happen to stay close to it, but I wouldnt buy it as a primary repellent. I think people get too hung up on that feature when the light itself is pretty solid for the price.

The way I see it, if you need to stay glued to the light for it to work, then it is not a barrier, it is just a bubble. I would rather just use a solid repellent on my skin and let the light do the lighting. Less mental math about whether I am standing in the magic zone.

I think the word “barrier” is doing a lot of heavy lifting with these things. Mine does a decent job of clearing out the space right around it, but I treat it like a campfire in that sense. You sit close enough, you benefit. You wander off to grab a drink or stand by the cooler, all bets are off.

I would not rely on it as your only protection if you are moving around at all. It is more of a “keep the immediate area comfortable” kind of tool. I use mine on the porch when I am just sitting in one spot reading, and it does seem to cut down on the buzzing near my ears. But if I get up to water the plants or something, I notice the difference pretty fast.

The 10 to 50 meter thing is probably based on some perfect open field with no wind and a stationary target. Real world use is a different story.

I think it depends on what you count as “working”. For me, it clears the immediate area around the light really well, but once I move a few steps away to grab my drink or sit on the other side of the fire, I’m fair game again. I just treat it as a light that happens to help a bit, not as actual full protection.

I think a lot of people expect the barrier to work like those old bug zappers where you hang it up and the whole yard is clear. That was my first mistake too. I brought mine to a cookout and set it on the cooler, expecting everyone within ten feet to be safe. Didn’t happen. The people right next to it were fine, but anyone standing by the grill was still swatting.

The thing is, I bought it mostly for the light and the battery life, so I was never too bothered by the bug claims. For tent use it does exactly what I need. I hang it near the entrance and it keeps the space inside calm enough that I can read before bed without something buzzing my ear. That alone was worth bringing it along.

What I noticed is that it works better when there is no competing light source. If I am using it on the deck with the porch light on, it seems to do nothing. When it is the only light around, the bugs seem to keep their distance a bit more. I have no idea why that is, but it has been consistent for me over several trips.

I would say if you are treating it as a secondary layer of protection while staying close to the light, you will probably be fine. If you expect it to clear out a whole campsite while you wander around the edges, that is not what it does. I stopped checking for bites and just started keeping it near my chair when I sit out.

I think the biggest clue is that you’re using it as a camping light and it works fine for that. The bug stuff is more of a “stay close to the glow” kind of deal in my experience. Once you’re past the light pool, you’re basically on your own against the mosquitoes.
