I’m thinking about getting a MixMate mainly for matcha and protein shakes. Does the stirring actually handle powders that tend to clump, or is it better for thinner drinks? I don’t want to deal with a gritty texture every morning.

Matcha is actually the one thing I use mine for and it does fine as long as you add the powder after the water. Toss it in first and you get a little ring of green paste stuck to the bottom. Protein shakes clump less than I expected too.

Mine does ok with protein powder but I still get a few clumps if I dump it all in at once. Matcha came out smoother for me than the shakes did.

I use mine for both and protein shakes come out way smoother than I expected. Matcha is fine too, no gritty texture for me at least. It’s not a blender though, so don’t expect it to fix big clumps if you dump everything in at once.

I mostly use mine for greens powder and it handles that without much fuss. Matcha isn’t something I’d expect a stirrer to fully fix though, since the clumping usually comes down to how you whisk it.

Matcha always ends up gritty for me with stirrers.

Matcha still clumps for me, coffee only.

I actually think matcha comes out better than coffee in mine, no gritty bits at all. The trick is not overfilling it, I fill to about the line and let it run one cycle before I take a sip. Coffee is the one that leaves a little sludge at the bottom for me sometimes.

Matcha is one of those things where a stirrer just isn’t going to beat a proper whisk or shaker, no matter what the cup claims. I’ve watched people try every gadget out there and the powder still finds a way to sit in little pockets. The problem isn’t really the stirring part, it’s that matcha needs that fast side to side agitation to break the surface tension on the clumps. A magnetic stir bar spinning in the middle of the cup just kind of pushes the powder around in a circle. If you’re mainly doing matcha every morning, I’d probably keep a small whisk around and use the mug for keeping it hot instead. For protein shakes it’s a different story since those powders dissolve way easier. So it kinda depends which one you care about more.

I actually had the opposite issue with mine when I first got it. I grabbed it mainly for iced matcha in the mornings because I was tired of standing there whisking before work, and the first couple of days I was ready to give up on it. I was dumping the powder in first and then pouring milk over the top, hitting the button, and walking away. Came back to a layer of dry green powder stuck to the bottom every single time, which is exactly the gritty thing you’re trying to avoid.

What actually fixed it for me was just changing the order I do things. I pour the liquid in first now, then sprinkle the matcha on top instead of dumping it in a clump, and I give it one quick press, let it sit for a second, then press again. Sounds fussy but it takes maybe ten extra seconds. Since I started doing that I haven’t had a single gritty cup, and I’ve been using it this way for a few months now, probably four or five times a week.

I know people say a stirrer can’t match a proper whisk, and I get where that comes from, but for a quick weekday drink it’s been totally fine for me. I still use my actual whisk on weekends when I’m not rushing, but on a work morning this thing does the job well enough that I stopped bothering.

Matcha in a stirrer mug is decent if you add the powder after the water and give it a few pulses. Dump it in first and you get a green puck at the bottom every time. Mine handles protein fine, so it’s not the powder itself, it’s the order.

Matcha still clumps unless you shake it first.

I use mine mostly for protein powder and it handles that way better than I expected. The clumps were my main worry too since I usually mix shakes in a shaker bottle and hate when you get those dry pockets stuck to the sides. With the MixMate I just hit the button a couple times while I’m getting my stuff together and it comes out pretty smooth. Not totally perfect every single time but close enough that I stopped dragging the shaker bottle around on trips. That’s really why I keep using it, it’s one less thing to pack and rinse out. For matcha I can’t really say since I don’t drink it, but if it’s anything like protein powder I’d guess it does fine as long as you don’t dump everything in at once.

Mine handles protein powder fine but matcha still needs a quick shake first. The stirrer alone left small clumps at the bottom for me. So it depends which powder you care about more.

Matcha in a stirrer is always going to be a losing battle if you expect it to fully break up the powder. I’ve had better luck just putting a little water in first, making a paste, then topping it off and letting it stir. The clumps you’re worried about come from dumping dry powder into a full cup, not the device itself.

I only care about hot coffee in mine, so I’m not the target for matcha. But I’ve watched my wife fight with a whisk for years and no little magnetic stirrer is replacing that. If clumping is your main gripe, a cheap shaker bottle beats waiting on this thing.

Matcha always clumps, that’s just how it is.

Powders that clump are honestly a texture problem before they’re a stirring problem. You can run the mixer twice as long and the little dry pockets still sit there because the water never got inside them in the first place. What’s worked for me is putting the liquid in first, then the powder on top, then letting it sit for a minute before hitting the button. The powder sinks and softens on its own and the stirrer just finishes the job. Same deal with protein, scoop it in after the liquid, not before. Chasing clumps with more spinning just moves them around the cup.
