I’m thinking about getting a CoolJet for my balcony but there’s no outlet out there. The listing says USB-C powered, so can I just plug it into a regular power bank or does it need a wall adapter? Not trying to buy a paperweight.

Mine runs fine off a power bank.

I picked one up mostly for the same reason, wanted something on the balcony without running an extension cord through the door. First week I kept babying it, unplugging the bank every time I walked away, checking if it got warm, all that. After a while I stopped thinking about it because it just kept working the same way. Mine pulls enough that a cheap little 5k bank I had lying around died in maybe an hour and a half on the middle setting. The bigger 20k one I take on trips lasted most of an afternoon, though I never actually timed it to empty. That part surprised me a bit since I figured it would sip power.

The thing I didn’t expect is that the water side matters way more than whatever you plug it into. I ran it dry one hot afternoon and it basically turned into a weak fan. Filled the tank back up and it felt noticeably cooler again within a minute or two. So if you’re out there for long stretches, you’ll be refilling more often than you’ll be swapping banks.

As for whether it’s a paperweight without a wall plug, no. Mine has never touched a wall adapter at home. It just lives off whatever bank is charged. I’d say grab a decent capacity one and you’re fine. It’s not going to cool a whole balcony, but for sitting right in front of it, it does the job.

USB-C doesn’t automatically mean it plays nice with any power bank. Some of these pull more than the cheap ones can push, so you get a slow fan or it just cuts out. I’d check the wattage before assuming anything.

I grabbed a cheap 10k brick from the drawer and it kept mine going through most of an afternoon on the low setting. Anything bigger than that and you’re basically carrying a second device around, which got old for me pretty fast.

USB-C doesn’t mean it’s meant to run off a battery all day. I’d check the listing for a wattage number before buying, because a weak power bank can leave you with a fan that barely spins.

Probably fine with a decent one.

The whole “needs a wall adapter” thing is overblown. Mine’s been running off nothing but a power bank since I got it and it’s been fine. As long as your bank isn’t ancient it’ll work.

I’ve had mine on a power bank since basically day one and it’s never needed a wall adapter. Not sure where the idea comes from that it does. Mine just runs off the USB-C cable like anything else and I’ve never had it cut out.

If it were me, I’d just grab a decent power bank and try it before assuming anything. Mine runs off a small one I already had, no wall plug involved. If it doesn’t power on with what you’ve got, then you know.

USB-C powered just means it takes a USB-C plug, not that any power bank will run it well. I’d look for the wattage in the listing and match it, otherwise you might get weak airflow or it cutting out.

Mine cuts out if the power bank can’t push enough juice. Ran it off a cheap one and the fan kept stalling, so I just use the bigger one I already had for my phone. Works fine now.

Balcony is actually a good use for it since you’re not stuck near an outlet. I ran mine off a power bank for a few hours last weekend and it did fine, though I didn’t push it past that.

I got a cheap inline USB meter just to see what mine pulls and it was drawing way less than I expected, so a basic power bank handled it no problem. Mine runs about six or seven hours on a 10k bank with the fan on low.

I went into it assuming USB-C meant I could just grab any cable and any brick and be fine. That lasted about two weeks. I ended up switching to a different setup entirely once I realized the whole thing is basically at the mercy of whatever you plug it into, and for me that turned out to be a bigger deal than I expected.

My take now is that the listing saying USB-C powered is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It tells you the shape of the plug, not what the thing actually needs to run properly. I don’t think you’d end up with a paperweight exactly, but I also don’t think it’s as simple as grabbing the oldest power bank in your drawer and heading out to the balcony.

What changed my mind was just how differently it behaved depending on what it was hooked up to. Same cooler, same setting, totally different result. So when people say USB-C like it’s one universal thing, that hasn’t matched what I’ve seen at all.

If I were buying again I’d treat the power source as part of the purchase instead of an afterthought. Not saying you need anything fancy, but the plug shape alone isn’t the whole answer.

I think you’re fine with a power bank as long as it actually puts out enough. Mine runs off a random one I had in a drawer, no wall plug needed. Just don’t grab the tiniest one you own, those can be hit or miss 😅

Ended up just trying it with the one I already had and it ran fine for a couple hours before I got bored of sitting out there. So that’s that. Not gonna pretend it was some big test.
