I’m thinking about getting the ChirpyCharm but I noticed the AI bird identification feature requires an optional subscription. Does that mean without it I just get the live camera and motion alerts but no automatic species ID? I’m not against paying a bit extra but I’d like to know what I actually lose if I skip it. Anyone using it without the subscription?

I get why they split it, but for me the subscription is the part I’d actually skip. I don’t need a name popping up on the screen every time something lands on the feeder. Half the fun is grabbing a coffee and trying to figure out what it is myself, then flipping through a guide later. If it were included, sure, I’d use it. Paying monthly just to have an app tell me a house finch is a house finch doesn’t do much for me.

Without it you still get the camera, alerts, and clips, which is honestly the main draw. The ID is a nice-to-have, not the reason I’d buy the thing. Some people probably love having everything auto-labeled, and that’s fine, but I’d rather keep it simple and not add another subscription to the pile. If you’re on the fence, I’d try it without first. You can always add it later if you find yourself really missing it.

Without it you still get the clips and notifications, just no name popping up, which is honestly fine if you don’t mind looking them up yourself. I let the sub lapse for a couple months and the feeder still worked the same.

I use mine without it and the species ID is the only thing missing. You still get alerts and can watch live whenever. I just look up whatever shows up if I’m curious enough.

The way I see it, the subscription is mostly for convenience more than anything. If you’re the type who wants to glance at your phone and immediately know what just landed on the feeder, it’s worth something. But if you’re okay with a bit of extra effort, you can absolutely get by without it. I’ve seen setups where people just screenshot the bird and use a free ID app after the fact, and honestly that works fine for most common species. The camera and alerts are the core of the product, and those keep working either way. So it kind of depends on whether you value the instant name pop-up enough to pay monthly for it. For me that would get old fast, but I know some people really enjoy that little moment of seeing the species show up automatically. Different strokes I guess.

The subscription is basically paying for the name tag. I ran mine without it for about three months and got plenty of clips, notifications, the whole thing. What I noticed is you end up with a camera roll full of “unknown bird” and then you’re googling stuff anyway. If you’re already the type to look things up, skipping it saves you money. If you want the app to just tell you what showed up, you’re stuck paying. There’s no middle ground where you get partial ID or anything. I cancelled after the trial and nothing else changed, so it’s really just that one feature. Whether that’s worth a monthly fee depends on how lazy you want to be about it.

The main thing you lose is just not having the app tell you what bird it is. Everything else still works. I went back and forth on it myself and eventually just skipped it. I figure if I really want to know what something is, I can look it up after.

I’d push back a little on the idea that the ID is just a bonus. If you actually want to know what’s visiting, that’s kind of the whole point of the feeder, otherwise you’re just collecting clips and guessing.

I get why people frame it as a bonus, but for me the ID is what makes the whole thing feel useful. Watching a clip and going “huh, neat bird” gets old after a while. You lose the thing that makes the footage make sense. That said, if you genuinely just want to see birds coming and going and don’t care about names, then skipping it is fine and the feeder still does its job. I let the subscription lapse for about two months and barely missed it. The clips still came through fine, I just had to figure out the birds myself. If naming them isn’t a big deal to you, skip it.

I use mine without the sub and I still get clips and motion alerts just fine. You lose the auto naming, so you’re eyeballing it yourself. I’m decent at ID so that trade works for me. If naming every bird matters more than saving a few bucks, that’s the call.

Appreciate all the replies, that clears it up more than the product page did. Sounds like I’d still get the camera and alerts, just no auto ID, which is fine for now. I’ll probably grab one and see how much I actually care about the naming part before adding anything.
