Thinking about using my SpyFocus for a few hours of continuous recording while I’m away. Anyone tried that? Does it get hot or shut down?

A few hours should be fine. These little cams get warm if you push them, but they’re not going to melt unless you leave it baking in direct sun or something. I would not overthink it.

I’ve run mine for a couple hours at a time and it just gets a little warm, nothing crazy. It never shut down on me or anything. I think unless you’re in a super hot room it’s not really something to stress about.

I’d probably keep it to shorter stretches if you can, just to be safe. I’ve left mine running while I popped out for an hour or so and it was fine, but I never pushed it much past that.

If you’re planning to leave it running for hours, just make sure it’s not in a stuffy spot. I’ve seen these things get warm but they usually keep going. Overheating shutdowns seem more like a random thing than a guarantee.

I think the overheating thing gets blown out of proportion sometimes. I’ve had mine going for a good chunk of the afternoon before and it just felt slightly warm to the touch when I grabbed it. Not hot, not alarming. I didn’t notice any lag or weird behavior while it was recording either. I just made sure it was sitting on a shelf with some space around it, not shoved behind a pile of stuff. I’ve also had it running in a room that gets a lot of sun and it still did fine. The battery is honestly the bigger thing to think about if you’re doing a multi-hour stretch. I found that out the hard way. As long as it’s not crammed into a tight spot, I wouldn’t stress too much about it shutting down on you.

Mine gets warm after a while too but I’ve never had it just die on me. I figure as long as it’s got some airflow it’ll keep going until the battery gives out first.

I think the battery dying is probably the bigger issue than heat if you’re going for a few hours straight. Mine has gotten noticeably warm to the touch but never enough to worry me, it just drains pretty fast when it’s recording nonstop.

Continuous recording is really what the battery is for, not the heat. I wouldn’t stress about overheating unless you’re baking it in a closed drawer. Mine has been fine for a few hours in a normal room, so I’d just set it up and check the app once in a while.

I keep seeing people worry about this, but honestly mine has been fine. I’ve had it running for maybe three hours straight once when I forgot I even had it going, and it was warm when I finally grabbed it, but not scary hot or anything. Just normal warm, like a phone after a long video call. It never shut down or gave me any trouble.

I think a lot of these mini cams are built with continuous recording in mind since that’s kind of the whole point. If it was going to die from heat after an hour, nobody would buy it. I’m not saying you should bake it on top of a radiator or anything, but I wouldn’t overthink it. The battery is probably what’s going to stop you before the heat does. I’d just charge it fully and maybe test it once at home while you’re still around to see how it feels.

I wouldn’t overthink it. These little cameras run warm during normal use and that’s pretty much it. If you’re not tucking it somewhere completely sealed off, a few hours of recording isn’t going to hurt anything. Battery life is what you’ll actually run into first.

From what I’ve seen, the heat is not really the thing that’ll stop you. It’s more that the battery runs out before the camera ever gets hot enough to be a problem. I’ve left mine recording while I went out to grab food and it was still going when I got back, just a bit warm.

So long as it’s not stuffed somewhere with zero airflow, it’ll probably be fine. I’ve seen way more complaints about the battery dying early than the unit actually cooking itself.

I think if you’re really worried about it, maybe just set it up somewhere you can check on it occasionally if you’re home. But for leaving it running while you’re out, I’d probably just try it once and see what happens. If it’s still recording when you get back, then great, problem solved. If not, you know for next time.

People get way too worked up about these things. It’s a small camera, it’s gonna get warm if you run it for hours, that’s just how it goes. Unless it’s actually shutting off on you or the video is messing up, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. Just set it somewhere sensible and check the footage when you get back.

Alright, thanks for the input everyone. Sounds like it handles a few hours fine as long as it’s not trapped somewhere with no air. I’ll just set it up and not overthink it.
