I’m thinking about getting the ChirpyCharm but my backyard is pretty shaded most of the day. Will the solar panel still keep the battery charged enough, or would I need to use the USB charging a lot? Just curious if anyone has it in a partly shady spot.

I have mine hanging on a covered porch that only gets morning sun and the battery has been fine so far. I do plug it in occasionally when I notice the camera acting sluggish, but it’s not like a weekly thing. If your spot gets even a couple hours of direct light you’re probably okay.

If the panel gets any decent sun at all during the day, it’ll usually keep up fine. Mine sits under a tree line that blocks most of the afternoon light and it’s still been holding charge for weeks. You’ll end up using the USB port in the winter more than anything else.

I wouldn’t stress too much about perfect sun. Mine is tucked beside a fence that gets dappled light at best, and it still holds a charge for a couple of days before I even think about the USB cable. It’s not like it dies overnight if a cloud rolls by.

USB charging will be part of your routine if the spot is truly shaded. I tried mine in a spot that got maybe an hour of direct sun and the battery drained noticeably faster than I expected. Not a dealbreaker, but I wouldn’t count on the panel doing much heavy lifting.

I think people overestimate how much direct sun these things really need. Mine is in a spot that gets maybe two or three hours of direct light and the rest is just bright shade, and I’ve only plugged it in a handful of times since I got it. The battery seems to hold onto a charge pretty well on its own.

The solar panel on this thing is more of a helper than a full power source. If your yard is genuinely shaded for most of the day, you’re going to be plugging it in more often than you’d like. I’ve seen people assume these things just run forever on a bit of ambient light, but that’s not how it plays out in practice.

Mine is in a spot that gets a small window of direct sun in the late afternoon, and the battery drains noticeably by the end of the week. It’s not dead, but it’s low enough that I’m keeping the USB cable handy. I wouldn’t call it a dealbreaker, but I also wouldn’t buy it expecting to never touch the charger again. If you’re not willing to deal with that routine, you’re probably better off looking at a model with a bigger battery or a separate panel you can mount somewhere sunnier.

I’d push back a little on the idea that it needs direct sun all day. Mine’s mounted on a porch that gets maybe two hours of actual sunlight and it still catches enough to keep the camera going through the day. The battery drains faster on cloudy stretches, sure, but I rarely touch the USB cable. If your spot is truly dark all day, that’s different, but “shaded” doesn’t automatically mean dead.

I got mine set up on a patio that’s pretty much in the shadow of the house until late afternoon. It’s not what I’d call direct sun for more than a couple hours, maybe less in the winter. I honestly haven’t had to plug it in much since I got it, but I also don’t have the camera on live view constantly. It just sits there and does the motion detection thing, and that seems to be pretty easy on the battery.

If you’re the type who wants to watch the live feed for long stretches every day, that’ll drain things faster no matter what. But for the regular bird visiting and recording stuff, the solar panel keeps up fine in my spot. I think I’ve used the USB cable maybe twice since I set it up months ago. I do check the battery level in the app when I think about it, and it’s been sitting around the same range most of the time.

Mine’s in a shady corner too and the solar barely keeps up, so I just top it off with USB every few days.

If the yard is truly shaded most of the day, plan on grabbing the USB cable regularly. The solar panel tops it off on sunny days but it is not some magic battery that never dies. I treat it like a phone, just charge it when it gets low and move on.
