LiamWParticipantThinking about picking one up for travel. Most bottles I only fill halfway anyway. Does the Hewelth UVClean still sterilize properly if it’s not full? Not sure if the UV light reaches everything or if it needs a certain water level. Any info would help.

MemberMine works fine when I don’t fill it all the way. I usually keep it around half since I refill more often that way, and it still does its thing.

MemberHalf full is fine in my experience. I take mine on day hikes and never top it off, and the water still tastes clean after a few hours. The light bounces around the inside pretty well as far as I can tell.

MemberMine definitely seemed weaker when I did that.

no_sleepParticipantHalf full is the only way I’ve ever used mine and it still does its thing. The light bounces around in there enough that I never noticed a difference. Battery drains a bit faster on the auto cycles though, that’s my only gripe.

MemberHalf full actually seemed to make mine worse. I tried it that way on a road trip and the water started smelling off way faster than when I fill it up. So I don’t buy that it works just as well when it’s not full.

LunaMemberI’ve only ever filled mine maybe two thirds at most and it still seems to do its thing. No idea if the light hits every corner perfectly, but I haven’t noticed any weird taste or film building up, and that’s usually my sign something’s off. For travel I’d just use it like normal.

MemberUV-C needs direct line of sight to actually do anything. That’s the part most people gloss over. If the light can’t hit the surface of the water or the walls of the bottle directly, it’s not sterilizing that spot. So a half full bottle means the upper portion of the interior is still exposed to the LED, which is fine, and the water surface gets hit too. The lower half of the water volume is where it gets murky. UV-C penetrates clear water to some depth, but the effectiveness drops off fast the deeper it goes. Half a bottle isn’t that deep so it’s probably okay for the water itself. The bigger issue is the cap and the threads around the mouth. Those get direct exposure regardless of water level, which is honestly where most of the funk builds up anyway.
I’ve had mine for about seven months and I mostly keep it around half because I drink it and refill throughout the day. Haven’t gotten sick or noticed anything weird. But I also don’t treat it like a purification device. It’s more of a “this keeps the bottle from getting gross” thing in my head. If I was filling up from a sketchy tap somewhere I’d want it full so the light has less empty space to bounce around in and more water to pass through. Half full is fine for maintenance. It’s not fine if you’re expecting it to turn bad water into good water.

MemberI’d keep it at least three quarters full if you want the light to actually hit the water surface properly. Half full might still run the cycle but it won’t do much for the empty space above. For travel I’d just fill it closer to the top and not fight it.

MemberThe whole “light needs to hit the water surface” thing is overblown for this thread. I’ve been using mine with maybe a third in it after the gym and it’s been fine for weeks. The bigger issue nobody brings up is the seal on the cap. Mine started weeping a little after a couple months and that’s going to matter way more than your fill level. As for sterilization, the light sits in the cap and fires down, so as long as there’s some water in there it’s doing something. Whether it’s actually killing everything is a different question, but the smell test has held up for me. Half full is not the problem people are making it out to be.

pixelnomadParticipantI’d say the self-cleaning cycle is really just maintaining whatever water is in there, so a partial fill is fine for that. My main issue with half fills is the bottle itself gets way less exposure on the empty upper walls, and that’s where I noticed a stale smell after a couple of days. Doesn’t mean the cycle fails, just that it’s doing less than people assume.

MemberI don’t buy the “needs to be full” thing. Mine’s been half full plenty of times and the water stayed fine for a day or two. The UV isn’t filtering anything anyway, so the level matters less than people think. If it smells clean, it is clean enough for me.

MemberHalf full still works fine for me.

MemberHalf full is fine in my experience, but I noticed the cycle seems to do more for the bottle itself than the water when there’s not much in there. Mine sat with maybe a quarter of water overnight once and the inside still smelled clean the next morning. So for travel where you’re mostly worried about the bottle getting funky, that’s plenty.

MemberI’ve been using mine for about four months now and I almost never fill it more than halfway. It still runs the cycle fine and the water tastes clean the next morning. I actually got it mostly for hotel taps and airport fountains when I travel, and a half fill is usually all I want anyway since I’m not lugging around a full bottle. The light doesn’t seem to care how much is in there. What I did notice is that if I leave it sitting with barely any water for like two days, the inside starts smelling a bit off even with the auto cycles going. So for me half full works great for a day of use, but if it’s going to sit longer than that I just dump it and refill. Maybe that’s just how these things are though.

LiamWParticipantMine stopped cycling reliably at half, so it’s not a given.

MemberThats wild mine refuses to run if its less than half.
