MozzDefense magnetic base strong enough for tent pole?

So I’ve been using the MozzDefense for a few weeks now and the light part is fine. But I’m still not sure about that magnetic base. I want to stick it to the metal frame inside my tent so it’s not just hanging there. Does it actually hold or does it slide down? I haven’t tried it yet because I don’t want it falling on my head in the middle of the night.

Mine held on a horizontal bar fine but slid down the slanted pole in my tent. If your frame is vertical you’re probably okay, otherwise the carabiner is the safer bet.

Mine actually stuck fine to the metal crossbar in my SUV when I was using it as a work light, no sliding at all. Tent frames might be a different story depending on the coating. The magnet is decent though, way stronger than I expected for something this size.

I picked one up for my dad last month since he’s always messing with his little camping setup, and he’s the type who’ll try sticking everything to metal just to see if it holds. He told me the magnet grabbed onto the frame of his canopy tent alright, but when he bumped it while getting up in the night, it swung a bit and he ended up just clipping it to the loop instead. So it stuck, but it wasn’t rock solid once anything touched it.

That said, he still uses the thing, just not as a magnet mount anymore. He hangs it now and it’s been fine for the couple of trips he’s taken it on. I don’t think the magnet is garbage, it’s just one of those features that sounds better on the box than it works in real life.

If I were you I’d test it at home first before trusting it over your head. Stick it on something metal, give it a nudge, see how it behaves. Ten seconds of that beats waking up to a light on your face at 2am.

Mine’s been stuck to the same spot on my tent frame for about two weeks now and it hasn’t budged once. I did wipe the frame down first though, it was pretty dusty from storage. Just check your pole isn’t the really thin slick kind.

Mine slid down a painted pole but held on bare metal.

I tend to baby my gear a bit, so I actually prefer the carabiner over the magnet for tent use. The magnet is handy for quick stuff like sticking it to a cooler lid or the tailgate while I dig around, but anything hanging over my head overnight I want a physical connection. I did try the base once on the dome of my tent and it held fine while I was sitting there, but I kept second guessing it every time I rolled over. Took it down and clipped it to the loop instead. Not saying the magnet is weak, just that I sleep better when gravity isnt the only thing keeping a light off my face. If you do go the magnet route, at least hang it somewhere you wouldnt mind it landing.

Magnet held mine fine on a flat steel plate in my garage for a couple months. But the rounded bars on my old tent, no chance. If your frame is flat, you’re good.

I’d trust the carabiner over the magnet for a tent pole. Magnets are fine for a quick stick on something flat, but I never rely on them for anything hanging over my head while I sleep.

Mine holds fine on the flat part of my tent frame.

Probably fine if your tent frame is flat steel.

Mine actually stayed put on the angled bar near the top of my tent, which surprised me since I figured it would creep down overnight. I knocked it once while getting up in the dark and it just tilted a bit and held. That said, I did notice it sticks way better to the frame than to the little metal plate on my cooler, so surface matters more than I expected. I still clip the carabiner as a backup when I remember, mostly out of habit. If your frame is thin or coated it might be a different story, but on the bare section of mine it’s been solid for maybe three weekend trips so far.

Mine slid down a smooth pole pretty quick.

I mostly use the carabiner myself, just feels more secure to me. The magnet is handy for quick stuff but I’d rather not have the light drop in the middle of the night.

I prefer the carabiner myself, magnets on camping gear always make me nervous. I like knowing the light is actually clipped on, not just stuck to something. Magnet is a nice extra but I wouldn’t trust it overnight.

Mine definitely won’t hold on a vertical pole, so no.
