Does the Qinux ScryneX really hold a 179° viewing angle?

I keep seeing that 179° wide viewing angle claim and I’m a bit skeptical. When I sit off to the side on my couch, will the picture still look decent or does it wash out? I’m thinking of getting the Qinux ScryneX for movie nights but I don’t want to fight over the middle seat. Anyone actually test this from the side? Just wondering if it’s close to what they advertise.

179 is marketing math. I’ve used a couple screens that claimed similar and anything past roughly 45 degrees off center starts looking washed out to me. Unless this thing has some special coating, the number on the box isn’t what you’ll see from the edge of the couch.

I actually sat way off to the side during an outdoor movie night with mine and the picture still looked fine to me. Wasn’t washed out like I expected. Maybe not perfectly bright at the extreme edge but totally watchable.

That 179 number is doing a lot of work for a piece of fabric. I’ve got a cheap fixed screen in the basement and the viewing angle claim is really about the screen material, not the frame or the mounting, and gain is the thing nobody mentions in these listings. A screen with any real gain to it is going to hotspot and fall off at the sides no matter what the box says. If the ScryneX material is matte and low gain, side seats will hold up better but the whole picture gets dimmer for everyone. So you’re trading brightness for angle either way. That’s just how projection works. You can’t have both from a $60 sheet of material. Sit where you want, but don’t expect the side seats to match the center.

Angles that steep never look great in real rooms.

My setup is in a narrow room so I’m usually watching from an angle anyway. I’d rather have a screen that holds up a bit off center than one that only looks right dead on. No idea if 179 is real but that’s what matters to me.

179 is just the angle where the image technically exists, not where it still looks good. I’ve never seen one of these hold up past maybe 50 or 60 degrees before it fades. If three people are on a wide couch, someone’s getting the dim end.

If I were setting up movie nights and cared about people sitting off to the side, I would not buy a screen based on a 179 number. I would buy it from somewhere with easy returns and just test it in my actual room with my actual projector. That tells you more than any spec sheet.

I went through this with a different pull-up screen last year. On paper it had some huge viewing angle too. In practice the middle looked fine and the edges got dim and slightly gray once I moved a few feet over. Not unwatchable, just noticeably worse. Nobody complained, but people definitely drifted toward the center.

So my move would be order it, hang it, and make somebody sit in the worst seat on purpose. If that looks acceptable to you, keep it. If not, send it back. Cheaper than guessing.

We’ve been using ours for backyard movie nights since spring and the side seats honestly surprised me. I usually end up on the far left corner because the kids claim the middle, and the picture still holds up fine from there. Colors don’t go all weird and it doesn’t fade into a washed out mess like our old pull down screen did. Now I’m not sitting at some crazy extreme angle, but it’s definitely more than straight on. The one thing I’d say is that a lot of it comes down to your projector too. Ours isn’t anything fancy but it throws a bright enough image that the sides stay watchable. If you’re working with a dim projector the angle thing matters way less anyway. For movie nights where people spread out, it’s been totally fine for us.

I don’t have the ScryneX, but I’ve been down this road with a couple of fabric screens and I’ll say the angle number matters way less than people think for movie nights. The real issue for me was wrinkles more than side viewing. I store mine rolled up and if I don’t let it hang long enough before people come over, you get these little shadows across the middle that look way worse than any edge dimming. Once it’s stretched out for an hour or so it’s fine. So if you’re worried about people fighting over the middle seat, the side seats usually look okay in a dim room, but plan to set the screen up early. That mattered more in my case than the viewing angle claim. Also if your projector is weak, that affects the sides more than the screen does.

I bought one of these for a spare room mostly because it was cheap and I wanted something I could take down easily. Set it up on the wall with the adhesive hooks, nothing fancy, and used it for about two months with a basic 1080p projector. Here is the thing though. I actually found the side viewing got worse the further back people sat. Up close and off to the side it was honestly fine, colors held up, faces were watchable. But once you move toward the back corner of the room, the image got noticeably dimmer and flatter. My brother sat in that back corner for a game one night and kept asking if the projector was dying. It wasn’t. That was just the screen at that angle from that distance.

So for movie nights where people are scattered around, my experience was the opposite of what some folks here seem to be saying. The angle itself wasn’t the killer, it was the combination of angle and distance. Nobody was fighting over the middle seat at my place, they were just squinting from the edges. If your couch is close to the screen you’ll probably be fine. If it’s a long room, don’t count on it looking great from the far corners no matter what the box says. That 179 number is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

179 is just a number I’d ignore. What actually matters for side seats is the projector, not the screen. A cheap projector will wash out at an angle no matter what surface you hang. For movie nights, the screen is the last thing I’d base the decision on.

That number is marketing fluff. I have a similar screen and past maybe 40 degrees off center it starts looking dim and washed out. You will still avoid fighting over the middle seat since the picture is watchable from the sides, just not great.

I don’t have the ScryneX but I’ve messed around with a few of these foldable screens at a friend’s place and the angle thing comes down to the material more than the number. His screen had that grayish backside and it held up okay from the side, but you could definitely tell when you were past a certain point. The bigger thing I noticed was wrinkles. If you don’t get it stretched tight, those creases show up way more from an angle than they do straight on, so the side seats get a double whammy. If the screen is pulled flat though it’s honestly fine for the most part. I’d say set it up once and walk around it before movie night so you know where the decent spots are. That’s how we figured out which end of the couch to claim.

I’ve seen that 179 number thrown around on a bunch of these screens and it always feels like a spec sheet flex more than anything. For movie nights I’d honestly just grab the middle-ish seat and not stress, the vibe matters more than a tiny bit of dimming at the edges.

I’ve had mine a few months and the side view is genuinely fine. My kid sits almost parallel to the screen on the floor and still watches without complaining. What gets you is a bright room, not the angle.

I’ve had mine since spring and the side view honestly holds up better than I expected for a foldable screen. My partner sits way off to the left near the wall and has never once complained about it looking washed out. I really do think the angle claim is exaggerated, but for normal couch spread it’s fine.

Mine looks fine from the far corner.

The number is whatever, but what got me was the wrinkles. Fold lines show up way more from the side than head on, so the angle thing was the least of my problems.

179 is just a number they slap on the box. Mine looked fine from the side until you got past maybe 45 degrees, then it dims out noticeably. Still watchable, but I wouldn’t plan a whole room around that claim.

I still haven’t pulled the trigger on this one but the replies helped. I keep going back and forth but the mixed answers are probably realistic for a screen like this. Might just grab one and see for myself.
