I’m looking at the TP-Link RE700X as a way to add a couple of wired ports in my home office, but I’m not using a TP-Link router. If I plug it into my current router via Ethernet and use access point mode, will it work normally, or does it need a TP-Link router for that mode to function? Just want to make sure before I pick one up.

I think you’re overthinking it. Access point mode works with any router, not just TP-Link.

Should work fine. Access point mode is pretty standard, it just turns the RE700X into a wired access point so any router will hand off internet to it without issue.

Pretty sure it works fine. I used one with a Netgear router and it just showed up as an access point after plugging it in. No weird setup issues.

Access point mode doesn’t care what brand your router is, so you’re fine there. The only catch is you lose the mesh features unless everything is TP-Link.

It’s not that deep really. Plug it in, switch it to access point mode, and it’ll work with whatever router you have. I’d just grab it.

Oh I actually looked into this exact thing before buying mine. Access point mode works totally fine with any router, you just plug it in via Ethernet and it handles everything on its own. I’ve got mine hooked up to an old Netgear and it’s been running for months without a hiccup.

Access point mode works fine with any router, I’ve had mine hooked up to an old Asus for months now. Only thing I’d mention is the app setup can be a bit annoying if you don’t have a TP-Link router, but once it’s running it just works. I mainly use it for the extra ethernet ports too and it’s been solid.

Honestly, I had a totally different experience with mine. It kept dropping the connection in access point mode with my old router, and I could never get it to stay stable. Ended up just returning it.

Huh, I’ve seen a couple people saying it just works, but I had the opposite experience with mine. Could never get the access point mode to stay stable when I plugged it into my non-TP-Link setup. Might just be my luck though, seems to work fine for most people.

I mean, access point mode is pretty standard across most brands, so you should be fine. I’ve used extenders from other companies with non-matching routers before and never had a problem. The only thing is the app might nag you a bit during setup if it detects a different brand, but it still works. You could always just return it if it gives you trouble.

I’ve wondered about that too actually. The access point mode should be universal, so I’d be surprised if it needed a specific router brand to work. I’d probably still check the manual just to be safe.
