I’m a side sleeper with fairly broad shoulders and keep waking up with a sore neck. Would the Melara Air actually help with that or is it just another overhyped pillow? Not looking for medical claims, just wondering if the cutouts make a real difference for shoulder pressure.

I have the same shoulder situation and the cutout area is the one part that actually feels thought out, since my arm isn’t jammed up into the pillow all night. It didn’t magically fix my neck the first week, but the sore spot I used to get behind my shoulder eased off. For me it earned its spot on the bed.

Mine took a good two weeks before my neck stopped complaining, so don’t judge it after one night. The cutouts do help, but I still had to fiddle with how far my shoulder sat into them.

The cutouts are the only part of that design I’d actually trust.

Cutouts didn’t do much for my shoulder.

I wouldn’t count on the cutouts for broad shoulders. Mine didn’t feel any different from a regular contour pillow, and the sore neck stayed. Returned it after a week.

The cutouts get a lot of attention but the height of the pillow is what actually matters for broad shoulders. If the pillow is too low, your shoulder pushes your head up and your neck bends. If it’s too high, your neck cranes. The cutout just gives your bottom arm somewhere to go, which is nice, but it won’t fix the angle if the loft is wrong for your frame.

I’ve tried a few ergonomic pillows and the ones with a fixed shape only work if your body happens to match what the designer had in mind. Broad shoulders usually need a taller pillow, and most standard-size ones aren’t tall enough. The Melara Air looks like it sits somewhere in the middle, so it might be fine or it might not, depending on how wide you actually are and how you position your arm.

The cutout does something, but it’s not magic. It’s more about stopping your arm from getting pinned under your head all night. That alone can reduce some pressure, but it won’t change the fact that your neck still has to line up with your spine. If the height is off, no cutout is going to save you.

I tried a similar cutout pillow and it didn’t change much for my shoulders. If your neck is already sore every morning, swapping pillows is kind of a gamble. Some people love it, some just wasted money.

The cutouts were the first thing I noticed helping, since my shoulder usually pushes regular pillows up into my neck. Took a few nights to get used to the shape though. Worth a shot if you’re waking up sore.

I only tried the Melara Air for a few nights at a friend’s place, and the cutouts did feel different from a normal pillow. My shoulder wasn’t pushed up as much, so less pressure there. But the neck support felt a bit too firm for me, so I’d probably look at the height first.

I’ve had mine about three months and the cutouts are the whole reason I kept it. My shoulder used to shove regular pillows right up under my ear, and this one just kind of sits around it instead. Neck soreness faded after the first week or so.

I don’t think the cutouts are what you should focus on. I’ve got wide shoulders too and what actually helped me was just a taller pillow, not any special shape. The Melara Air might work but I’d check the loft height first before buying into the butterfly design.

The cutouts are what sold me on it too. I’ve been using mine for about a month now and the difference is mostly in how my shoulder sits. With a regular pillow, my shoulder would push everything up and my neck ended up at a weird angle by morning. With this one, that little dip gives my shoulder somewhere to go so the pillow stays put. I still get the occasional stiff morning if I sleep weird, but it’s way less often than before. I don’t think it’s some miracle fix, it’s just a pillow that’s shaped better for how I actually sleep. For the price I’m happy with it.

If I were you I’d figure out what your actual shoulder height is when you’re lying down before buying anything. I’ve got broad shoulders too and spent way too long assuming the cutout thing was the answer. Turns out my problem was the pillow being too flat, so my shoulder kept rolling forward and dragging my neck with it. The shape of the pillow barely mattered once I got something taller.

The Melara Air might work, but I’d be careful treating those cutouts like a magic fix. They’re more of a small comfort thing than something that changes how your shoulder sits. If your neck is already sore every morning, a pillow swap alone probably isn’t going to sort it. I’d try folding a towel under your current pillow first just to test if extra height helps. If it does, then you know what you’re actually shopping for.

Thanks, gave me enough to go on.
