I’m looking at the Logitech MX 3S for a portable laptop setup, but I run Linux on it. I know the full customization needs Logitech software. Does the mouse still work well for basic office stuff on Linux, or am I missing too much without setting up custom profiles?

It works fine for basic office stuff out of the box. I use mine on Fedora and the scroll wheel and basic buttons all work without any extra software. You really only miss the custom profiles if you need specific button remapping.

It’s fine for basic stuff. The scroll wheel and main buttons work out of the box on my setup, so clicking around in documents and web browsing is no issue. I was annoyed that the extra buttons are dead without the software, but for just moving a cursor around it does the job.

I just leave mine on the default settings and it works fine for browsing and typing. Never really felt the need to mess with profiles.

I’m mostly curious if Bluetooth is solid on Linux without the software. I’ve seen some mice drop connection randomly, but not sure if that’s a worry here.

I think it depends on what you need from it. I don’t miss the software at all since I just use the default settings.

I suppose it depends on how much you actually need to change from the factory settings. I use mine mostly for document work and browsing, and I haven’t felt the urge to tweak anything yet. The battery life has been decent so far, which is what I care about most for a portable mouse.

I’ve got one with my Linux laptop and honestly it’s been fine for normal use. I didn’t even bother trying to set up the software, just paired it and it worked. The scroll wheel is nice straight out of the box. Only thing I kinda miss is maybe remapping one button, but it’s not a big deal.

Bluetooth has been solid in my experience, no drops or weird behavior. You can’t tweak the side buttons or scroll speed without the software, but out of the box it does the job for office stuff.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Default settings cover basic office work just fine, and bluetooth pairing is straightforward. Only thing you really lose is the side button shortcuts, but if you don’t need those it’s basically plug and play.

I think you’ll be fine. The hardware works great out of the box no matter what OS you’re on.

You’re overthinking it. It’s a mouse, it moves the cursor and clicks. The default scroll speed works fine for spreadsheets and docs. The only thing that bugs me is the middle click feels a bit stiff out of the box, but you get used to it.

I’d probably just use it as is and see how much the defaults actually bug you. Most people don’t tweak every button anyway.

I’ve seen this question a few times. The mouse works fine for basic stuff out of the box, bluetooth pairs without drama. You’re really only losing the extra button mapping, which most people don’t touch anyway. Not a big deal unless you’re dead set on remapping the side buttons.

Alright, I think I’ve got enough to go on. Sounds like the defaults are fine for most people. I’ll probably just pick one up and not bother with the software.
