I’ve got a cockapoo and I keep hearing different things about how often they need a trim. Some say every 6 weeks, others say 8. My guy’s fur is getting a bit long around his eyes but otherwise seems fine. Just wondering what other people do in real life, not what the groomer says.
I usually just go by feel more than a set schedule. If his eyes are getting covered or he starts looking shaggy, that’s my cue.
I’ve got a cockapoo too. I usually just book him in when his fur starts bugging me, which ends up being around 7 or 8 weeks. The eye area is usually what makes me cave.
Every 6 weeks sounds like a grooming upsell to me. I push it to 10 or 12 weeks unless his eyes are a mess. He looks like a mop for a while, but he doesn’t care.
I think 8 weeks is a decent middle ground. I don’t stick to a strict schedule either, just whenever his face starts looking like a mop. It’s probably fine to push it a bit if the fur isn’t bothering him.
Honestly, I think people overthink it a bit. If his eyes are fine and he’s not matting, just let it go another couple weeks.
I just take mine when he starts looking like he’s growing a beard. Usually works out to every couple months or so.
I push it closer to 10 or 11 weeks usually. As long as he’s not matting and can see fine, I don’t stress about it. Works for us.
I just take mine when the fur gets noticeably messy, usually around 8 weeks or so. The eye thing is the main trigger for me too, once it starts poking them I book it in. Other than that I don’t sweat the exact timeline, it’s not that precise in practice.
I don’t really keep track of the exact weeks, I just go by how he looks and feels. If his face fur is getting in his eyes or he starts feeling a bit too fluffy, that’s my cue. Usually ends up being around 8-10 weeks for me.
I’ve heard the 6 week thing too but mine’s always fine going longer. I think people worry too much about the exact number. If he can see and isn’t getting knots, a few extra weeks isn’t hurting anything.
My wife is the one who usually books it, but I think ours ends up being around 9 weeks most of the time. The fur around the eyes is really the only thing that makes me notice, so I get it.
I usually just watch for when his fur starts getting in his way, like when he’s eating and it drags through his food bowl. That’s my sign. Ends up being around 7 or 8 weeks for us but I’m not strict about it.
6 weeks seems like a money grab to me. I let mine go until the fur actually bugs me or him, which is usually closer to 10 or 11 weeks too.
I trim the eye fur myself in between grooms, saves having to go in early just for that. Usually push it to 10 weeks or so before I bother booking.
I think I’m in the 8-10 week camp usually. My guy’s fur doesn’t seem to get too crazy unless I slack off, then it’s more like 12 weeks. The eye trim thing is real though, I just snip that myself when it looks shaggy.

I’ve been wondering the same thing with my cockapoo. I usually just go by how the fur feels around his face and paws, if it’s poking him in the eye or getting matted behind his ears I book it in. For me that tends to be around every 9 weeks or so, sometimes longer if I keep up with brushing at home.
