Do I really need to upgrade my current setup for camping with pet tech?

I already have a basic power bank and a long cable for my pet’s GPS collar when we go camping. It works okay but I’m wondering if a dedicated travel charger setup would actually make packing easier or just add more stuff to carry. I’m not looking to overcomplicate things, just curious if it’s worth swapping out what I have. Has anyone stuck with their old gear and been fine?

I’ve been using the same basic power bank and cable for my dog’s tracker for a couple seasons now. It still works fine and I know where everything is in my bag. A fancy new setup would just be more stuff to keep track of.

Old gear works. Packing less beats packing fancy.

I’d look at how much you actually need to charge on a trip before swapping anything. If your current bank already gets your collar through a weekend, a separate travel charger is just more to keep track of. I only changed my setup once I started doing longer trips where one charge wasn’t enough.

I actually prefer keeping my charging stuff separate from the rest of my gear. Having one small pouch just for the collar charger and cable means I’m not digging through my pack at night, and I’ve been doing it that way for a while now. It’s less about upgrading and more about not mixing it in with everything else.

I stuck with my old power bank and cable for about two years before I changed anything, and it was fine. What finally pushed me to get a small dedicated setup was losing the cable in the tent one morning and spending way too long digging for it. That was the actual problem, not the charging itself.

So now I keep a little pouch with just the collar charger and a short cable, and it does make packing easier because I grab one thing instead of hunting around. It’s not some big upgrade, more like a small convenience thing. If your current stuff works and you always know where it is, there’s no real reason to swap. The dedicated setup only pays off if you’re constantly misplacing cables or juggling one bank between several devices. Mine is small enough that it doesn’t really add to the load, but I wouldn’t have bothered if I hadn’t kept losing the cable.

I’ve gone back and forth on this too and usually end up just keeping the old setup. A dedicated charger means another thing to remember to pack, and the basic bank still gets the job done for me. If packing lighter matters more than having a tidy little kit, swapping isn’t really gaining you much.

I’d just keep the basic setup you have. My experience has been that “dedicated” travel gear sounds nice in theory but usually just becomes one more pouch to keep track of, and I’m saying that as someone who likes gadgets.

What happened with me was I bought one of those all in one travel charger things for a trip with my dog’s collar and my phone, thinking it would tidy everything up. First couple of trips it was great, everything in one spot. Then I started leaving the little adapter piece at home because it lived on a different shelf, and eventually I was back to using the old power bank anyway because it was already in my bag. The dedicated thing ended up sitting in a drawer for most of last summer.

The old gear just works because it’s already in the routine. You know the cable is in the side pocket, you know the bank holds enough for a weekend, and there’s nothing new to forget. A swap only really makes sense if your current bank is dying mid trip or the cable is frayed. Otherwise you’re basically paying to reorganize something that already fits.

I’d stick with what’s working and maybe just get a slightly better cable if yours is getting worn. That’s the only upgrade I’ve actually noticed a difference from.

If your current bank already gets the collar through a trip, a dedicated charger is just more junk in the bag. Mine has been riding in the same pouch for three seasons and I have zero reason to swap it.

I wouldn’t bother swapping anything. My old bank and cable have been fine for two seasons now, and I only started looking at other options when the cable itself got chewed up. If your setup still works, adding a “dedicated” charger just means more stuff in the bag.

The swapping part is where I’d hesitate. But one thing I noticed with my own setup is that a shorter cable made way more difference than any fancy charger. Less tangling in the bag, less fuss at the tent. If your long cable is annoying to pack, that’s the cheap fix.

The stuff you already own is probably fine. Where I’d actually spend a little thought is the connector end, since camping grime and a worn plug seem to cause more trouble than the bank itself. I’ve had a cable act up just from bouncing around in a bag, not from anything fancy.

I lean toward keeping stuff simple since I’m the type who ends up with three chargers and none of them in the right bag. My old power bank lives in my camping bin permanently, so it’s one less thing to think about. If your current one’s already living in your pack, that’s kind of the dream setup.

I’ve been going back and forth on the same thing, so I get the appeal of a dedicated setup. What changed my mind was a trip last summer where I had my dog’s collar charger mixed in with all my own stuff and spent way too long digging through my bag at night. It wasn’t a gear failure, just a packing annoyance. After that I started keeping the collar stuff in one small pouch with the cable and bank, and honestly that little bit of separation made packing feel easier without buying anything new. So my opinion is that a dedicated charger might help if your current stuff is always tangled up with everything else, but it’s not automatically simpler just because it’s labeled for travel. For me the bigger win was just having one spot for pet tech so I wasn’t hunting for it. I’m still curious whether a shorter cable would be worth it though, since the long one is always the thing that turns into a knot in my bag. Did you end up trying a smaller cable or just sticking with the long one you already had?

I tried a separate travel charger pouch once and it just became another bag to keep track of. My old bank still lives in the tent pocket and does the job. Packing fewer loose bits has been the better trade for me.

Appreciate the input, sticking with the old gear for now.
