MemberWe had a brief outage yesterday evening and I realized my smart plugs just stopped responding to the app. I could still use the physical button on the lamp itself, but it got me thinking about what else works offline. Do most of these devices have local control options I’m missing, or is it just kind of expected that they go dumb without wifi? I’m not looking to overhaul everything, just curious if there’s a simple fallback I should set up.

MemberI get why people want local control, but in my place the router is the one that drops, not the internet. So even the “local” stuff gets flaky unless I’m on the same network. My smart bulbs just stay on whatever color they were and I use the wall switch like a caveman. Not worth setting up anything extra for me.

MemberI’m not sure the app problem is really about the internet at all. When ours cut out last month, the plugs came back fine once the router rebooted, so the wifi was the weak link, not the connection. A physical switch still being there is the only thing I actually count on.

MemberMine just fall back to the physical switch, which is fine.

MemberThe app usually needs the cloud, that’s why it goes unresponsive. The physical button is the fallback for most of my stuff too, and I’ve noticed the timers I set on the plug itself still fire even when the wifi is down.

MemberI don’t think most of these things really have a hidden local mode. In my experience they’re just cloud-dependent by default and the switch is the real fallback, which is kind of annoying but not much you can do unless you go out of your way to buy different gear.

MemberThe whole “just use the app” thing falls apart the second the internet hiccups, and I don’t buy that most of these gadgets have some secret local mode sitting there unused. I set up a couple of smart bulbs a while back and they were useless in an outage until I dug out the switch on the wall. Once I flipped that, the light came on fine, but the app stayed dead until the connection came back. The plugs were the same story, nothing in the settings that looked like offline control. So I stopped expecting them to be clever and just treat the physical switch as the real backup. If you’re not trying to replace everything, that’s the simplest fallback. Don’t count on the app doing anything useful when the wifi is out.

Maria_BakesMemberI have to push back on the idea that these things are all just cloud-dependent by default. In my experience a lot of them do keep working locally, it’s just that the app is useless during an outage so it feels like everything died. My setup is nothing fancy and when our internet went out for a few hours last month, my lights still responded to the wall switch and the routines I’d set up on a hub kept running fine. The plugs were the only thing that felt dumb because I was trying to control them from my phone. So I don’t think there’s a secret mode you’re missing, more that the fallback is usually something physical or a hub doing the thinking instead of the cloud. The app going unresponsive isn’t the same as the device being dead. It’s just that most people only ever touch things through the app so that’s the only way they notice.

HanSoloParticipantI’ve gone through a couple of power cuts where the wifi came back but the devices didn’t sort themselves out, and that’s the part that actually annoys me. The plugs were still on at the wall, the lamps were still lit, but nothing in the app would talk to them until I unplugged each one and plugged it back in. Took maybe ten minutes to walk around doing that, which isn’t the end of the world but it’s not exactly “smart” either. So my takeaway is that the offline behavior matters less than the recovery behavior. I don’t really care that the app is dead during an outage since I can reach the switches anyway. What I care about is whether everything comes back on its own afterward. In my case it didn’t, and I’ve just accepted that as the routine now. Not a dealbreaker, just something to expect.

MemberPhysical switches are the only thing I actually trust in an outage. I set up one lamp on a plain old timer plug a while back just so something in the house still clicks on and off without needing wifi at all. It’s dumb but it works, which is kind of the point.

Lisa HydrowMemberI mostly just accept that some things go quiet and use the old fashioned switch or button when it happens. That part doesn’t really bother me since the lights still turn on and off fine. The bit I do appreciate is when stuff picks right back up once the wifi returns instead of needing a reset.

Nina_gadgetMemberI actually like that some of this stuff falls back to basic behavior instead of trying to be clever. My kitchen plugs just stay in whatever state they were in, which is honestly fine for me. It feels less fragile than a bunch of automation trying to sort itself out mid outage.

MemberI keep a cheap battery-powered lamp on the side table for exactly this. When the wifi drops the plugs go quiet but at least I’m not fumbling around in the dark looking for a switch.

MemberI mostly just check whether the app still shows the device as online when the internet is out. Sometimes the router is fine but the internet is down and local stuff still works, other times everything drops. It’s inconsistent enough that I don’t really count on it.
18 de October de 2026 at 04:52 #16413
Lisa BassMemberI wouldn’t count on most of them having some hidden local mode. A few do, but plenty are just wired to the cloud and turn useless when the wifi goes. That’s been my experience anyway.

MemberMy stuff mostly just goes dumb too and I’ve made peace with that. The app being dead is annoying but at least the lamps still click on like normal lamps. I’m not really trying to chase down local modes for a handful of plugs.
18 de October de 2026 at 07:43 #16435Jackson_H
MemberA lot of this stuff is just cloud dependent and that’s the tradeoff for how cheap and easy it is to set up. I wouldn’t expect a simple fallback beyond the physical buttons already on the devices.
18 de October de 2026 at 09:00 #16446Alex Morgan
MemberA lot of the cheap stuff is cloud only, but some plugs have a local mode hiding in the settings that still works over wifi without the internet. Worth poking around the app before assuming it’s all dead. My outdoor plug actually kept its schedule through an outage, which surprised me since I figured it was the dumbest one in the house.

MemberFor me the one that actually works offline is the plain wall switch. Not fancy, but it never cares what the router is doing. My smart bulbs are the ones that annoy me because if the internet is down, the switch on the wall can cut power but I can’t dim anything or change the color until it’s back. Like the bulbs go on strike and just glare at me in whatever shade they were left in. Everything else I just leave alone until things reconnect. I did notice the app sometimes takes a minute to catch up even after the internet comes back, so I usually flip a switch the old way first and check the app later. Not a big setup, just how it’s been for me.

TommyWiresMemberThe thing that clicked for me was realizing the wall switch and the physical button aren’t a fallback, they’re the whole point. I picked up a couple of smart plugs mostly for scheduling a few lamps and the coffee maker, and during the last outage I just walked over and clicked them like a caveman. Worked fine. What surprised me was how little I actually missed the app for that short window. The part that bugged me was the stuff I’d set to run on a timer, like the porch light, which just sat there doing nothing until the wifi came back. So now I think of it less as “keeping the smart stuff running” and more as making sure the dumb parts still work on their own. If a gadget needs the cloud just to turn on, that’s the one that annoys me, but for everyday clicking around the house the manual option covers most of it.

Matt__MemberI travel a lot so I’ve gotten used to things going dumb the second hotel wifi flakes out. What helped me was just checking which plugs still respond on the same network without internet, some of mine do and some don’t. It’s not a full fix but at least I know which ones to actually rely on before a trip.
18 de October de 2026 at 13:51 #16484Olivia_park
MemberI went the other direction and actually added a couple of things that need the cloud less, since relying on the physical switch every time got old fast. Not a full overhaul, just swapped the worst offenders over time. Anyway, good to know I’m not the only one who noticed the app just dies.
