MarkD87MemberI’ve had my WineCork Pro for a bit now and it works fine on regular corks, no complaints there. But last weekend I opened a bottle with a synthetic cork and it felt like it struggled a little, kind of slow and I had to hold it steady more than usual. Anyone else notice that or was it just me?

MemberMine handles synthetic corks fine, but I can see what you mean about it feeling different. The synthetic ones always seem to grip tighter in my experience, so the motor has to work a bit harder. As long as it’s pulling straight, I don’t worry about it.

MemberI think the synthetic corks just have more grip, so the motor has to work a little harder. Mine does the same thing, especially with the firmer ones that feel almost plasticky. It has never gotten stuck or left chunks behind though, just sounds more strained for a second. I would not call it a real problem unless yours is actually stopping mid-pull.

MemberI’ve only used mine on a couple of synthetics so far, and honestly I didn’t notice it struggling, but those were the softer kind. The firmer ones do feel like they grab more, so I can see how it might slow down a bit. I just made sure to hold the base tight and it got through fine.

Matt__MemberI think it just depends on the cork. I’ve opened plenty of synthetics with mine and it’s been fine, but every once in a while you get one that’s a bit denser and you can tell it’s working harder. As long as it gets through it, I don’t sweat it.

Paul847ParticipantMine actually seemed to handle the synthetics better than the real corks, if anything. The firmer ones do take a second longer but I never felt like I had to hold it down harder or anything. Maybe yours just needs a bit more charge? I’ve noticed mine slows down when the battery is getting low.

MemberI’ve put mine through quite a few synthetics and never had it slow down once. Maybe yours is just getting tired?

MemberSynthetic corks have always been a bit of a mixed bag for me. The softer ones go through without any drama, but I’ve had a couple of those denser ones where the opener definitely sounded like it was working harder than usual. I just held it steady and it got through, but it wasn’t the same smooth pull you get with natural cork.

MemberHonestly I never paid much attention to it until you mentioned it. Mine does seem to take a touch longer on the firmer synthetic ones but it still gets through them without me having to push down or anything. Maybe just a bit more patience is all it needs.

MemberI had one synthetic cork a few months back that gave mine a rough time too. It wasn’t the slow part that bothered me, it was the noise. The motor sounded like it was working harder than usual, kind of a higher pitch than normal. I almost stopped it halfway because I thought something was off, but it did make it through.
What I noticed was that particular bottle had a pretty firm synthetic. The softer rubbery ones seem to go through without any drama. That firm one though, I had to keep a good grip on both the opener and the bottle. It didn’t feel like it was going to break anything, but it definitely wasn’t as smooth as a natural cork.
I’ve used mine on maybe a dozen or so synthetics since then and most were fine. That one firm cork stands out because it was the only time I actually paused and wondered if I should just use a manual opener instead. I didn’t, and it worked out, but I get why you’d feel like it was struggling.
I think these openers just prefer the give that natural cork has. Synthetics don’t compress the same way, so the motor has to push through more. As long as it’s still pulling the cork out cleanly, I wouldn’t worry too much. Just hold it steady and let it do its thing.

MemberIf it were me, I’d just keep an eye on it. Synthetic corks aren’t all made the same. The softer ones are basically foam and can grab the screw differently than the firmer composite ones. Mine has always pushed through both types, but I’ve noticed the firmer synthetics make the motor work a bit harder. It’s not a stall, but you can hear the difference in pitch. That’s normal for a lot of these electric openers, not just this one.
What I’d actually watch for is whether it starts struggling on regular corks too. That’s the sign the motor is losing torque. If it’s only the synthetics giving it a hard time, I wouldn’t bother replacing it yet. Just hold it steady like you did and let it do its thing. If it gets worse or starts chewing up the cork, then you’ve got a real problem on your hands.

MemberSynthetics are the only corks mine has ever torn up, so I actually avoid them now.

MemberMine handles them fine, but I’ve noticed the firmer synthetic ones make it work a bit harder too. Nothing that worries me, just one of those things I deal with when the bottle calls for it.

MemberMine actually pulls synthetic corks out faster than the real ones, so that’s interesting.

MemberI’ve pulled a handful of synthetic corks with mine and never really had an issue. The firmer ones do feel a bit more sluggish, but I just chalked it up to the material being denser than natural cork. As long as it gets the job done without shredding the cork, I’m not too bothered by it.

MemberI think a lot of it comes down to which brand of synthetic cork you end up with. I’ve opened maybe a dozen synthetic corks since getting mine, and most were totally fine. But there was one bottle, I think it was a cheaper New Zealand sauvignon blanc, where the cork felt almost spongy and it did that same thing you’re describing. It was like the worm couldn’t get a good grip, so the whole opener vibrated a bit and I had to hold it steadier than I normally would. It did eventually come out in one piece, just not as smooth as a natural cork. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now I wonder if those softer ones are just more likely to squish instead of slide out.

Laura CheckMemberThe synthetic cork thing is kind of hit or miss for me too. I had one that was super dense and it seemed like the motor was really having to work for it. But I also had a cheaper synthetic one that came out so fast it almost surprised me. I think it really depends on the density of the cork itself. The firmer ones just don’t compress the same way real cork does, so the spiral has to grip harder. I didn’t feel like it was damaging anything or going to break, but I definitely noticed the difference in how long I had to hold the button down. It’s not something that would make me avoid synthetic corks altogether, but I get what you mean about having to keep it steadier.

MarkD87MemberGood to know it’s not just me. Sounds like the synthetic cork brand makes a big difference, which tracks with what I’ve seen. I’ll probably just keep using mine and see how it goes. Appreciate the input everyone.
