Hey, quick question before I decide on the Black Falcon Drone. I keep seeing mixed stuff about whether you have to use your phone with the controller to get the live view or if the camera works on its own. I don’t mind using an app, but I’m just curious if it’s required or more of an option. Anyone know?

I’d just plan on using the phone with it, that’s how I’d fly it anyway.

I think you pretty much need the phone for the live view. Without it you can still fly around and probably record to the drone, but you won’t see what the camera sees until you pull the footage. I’d just get used to having the app open every time.

I’d say just assume you need the phone from day one. It’s basically the screen for the camera and the only way you’ll know what you’re actually filming. Without it, you’re flying blind and hoping for the best. Not my idea of fun, but maybe that’s just me.

It’s basically required if you want to see what you’re filming. I flew mine once without the phone just to see, and you’re completely blind. You can still record, but it’s a guessing game. Just plan on bringing your phone every time.

I’ve had mine for a few months and honestly the phone is more of a convenience than a strict requirement for me. I’ve flown it a couple times without connecting just to grab quick footage around the yard, and it still records fine to the memory card. You just have to point it roughly where you think you want it and check the footage later.

That said, I only do that for casual flights where I’m not chasing a specific shot. If I’m trying to frame something properly, I’ll connect the phone because guessing gets old fast. It’s not a big hassle for me since I’m usually carrying my phone anyway, but I can see why someone would want to skip the app sometimes. I’d say treat the phone like a tool you pull out when you actually care about the shot, not a strict leash.

The phone is basically the display for this thing, so I wouldnt skip it. Without it, you’re just pointing the camera somewhere and hoping it looks right. I fly with mine connected every time just because it feels pointless otherwise.

I’ve been flying mine without the phone attached most of the time. The camera still records fine, you just don’t get the live feed. If you’re okay with pointing it blind and checking the footage after, it works. I never really felt like I was missing much.

I think people make the phone thing sound like a bigger deal than it is. If you grab the drone just to mess around and check the footage later, you can skip the app entirely. The camera still records to the card, so you’re not losing anything except the live view. Only reason I’d say the phone is a must is if you actually want to frame shots properly or see where you’re flying in tight spots.

Phone’s not mandatory but I honestly can’t imagine using mine without it. I fly from my car a lot between jobs and the live view is the whole reason I grabbed this thing. Without the app you’re just recording and hoping for the best. I would say plan on using it.
