Hey all, I keep seeing StopWatt mentioned and I’m curious about getting one, but I’m not sure where I’d plug it in. My breaker box is in the garage and the outlets in my living room are far from it. Does it actually need to be close to the box, or is it fine to just put it in a regular room? I’m just wondering if placement makes a big difference before I buy one.

I wouldn’t stress too much about it. I just plugged mine into an outlet in the hallway and left it alone. It’s not like you’re going to move it around every day anyway, so just find a spot that’s out of the way and call it done.

The manual says near the breaker box, but honestly I think it matters less than people make it out to be. I have mine plugged in on the second floor and it still shows the green light and does its thing. The way I see it, the unit works on the whole circuit anyway, not just the outlet it’s sitting in.

I just put mine in whatever outlet was easiest to reach and didn’t overthink the distance. I figure the wiring in the walls connects everything anyway, so the exact room probably doesn’t change much. If it actually works, it works from anywhere you plug it in.

Placement probably matters less than the marketing suggests, but I would still lean toward plugging it in somewhere on a main floor outlet rather than a bedroom. The distance from the box is one thing, but the circuit it lands on seems more relevant to me. If you only have one unit, I would just put it where it is convenient and not lose sleep over it.

If it were me, I’d just go ahead and plug it in wherever is convenient. I know the box is in the garage, but honestly, I don’t think most people are going to want to run an extension cord out there or sit in the garage just to have a little green light on. The whole point is that it’s a set it and forget it kind of thing, so having it in a spot you can actually see and forget about makes more sense to me.

I have mine plugged in near my entertainment center just because that’s where I spend most of my time and where most of my stuff is plugged in. I figure if it’s helping with the flow of electricity, it’s probably doing its thing wherever it’s at. I didn’t measure anything or compare before and after, but I also didn’t stress about the distance. For the price and the ease of use, I’d say just find a normal outlet and call it a day.

The whole “plug it near the breaker box” thing sounds like the manual covering its ass more than a real requirement. I’d just put it wherever you actually remember it exists and won’t trip over it. If it’s going to do anything, it’s going to do it through the wiring anyway, so I wouldn’t rearrange my garage for it.

When I first got mine, I was in the same boat. The panel is in the basement laundry room and I didn’t want to run an extension cord just for this thing, so I plugged it into the hallway upstairs. Honestly, for the first couple of weeks I figured it was a dud because I didn’t notice anything different.

But I left it alone. After maybe a month or so, I did feel like the lights in the kitchen weren’t flickering as much when the fridge kicked on. That could just be me paying more attention, though.

I happened to move it down to the laundry room last month when I was reorganizing, and I’m not sure it changed anything major. The place still runs the same as far as I can tell. So I guess my opinion shifted from “this is useless” to “this might be doing something small” and then back to “I have no idea if location matters.”

I figure the wiring in the walls connects everything anyway, so the distance shouldn’t be that big of a deal. I wouldn’t stress about getting it right next to the box. Put it somewhere you won’t trip over it and forget about it for a while. That’s what I did.

I think people get a little too hung up on the placement thing. I had mine in a bedroom outlet for a couple of months and honestly couldn’t tell if it was doing anything at all. Then I moved it to a hallway outlet that’s on the same side of the house as the panel, not even that close, and I noticed the lights stopped flickering when the fridge kicked on. That was the big change for me. The distance from the actual box didn’t seem to matter as much as being on the right circuit or whatever.

My panel is in a utility closet in the back and I wasn’t about to run an extension cord out there just to satisfy the manual. That seemed like a fire hazard waiting to happen, or at least an eyesore. The way I see it, the thing is just a filter. It’s going to catch some of the junk on the line no matter where you plug it in. It’s not like it needs to be physically next to the breakers to do its job.

I also have a couple of older appliances that draw a lot of power and I think that’s where it helped most. If your house has newer wiring and everything is pretty stable, I doubt you’d notice much of a difference regardless of where you put it. So I would say don’t stress over the garage. Just find a convenient outlet on a main floor and give it a few weeks. If your place has the kind of electrical quirks that this thing is supposed to help with, you’ll probably notice it no matter which room it’s in.

Plug it in the living room and it’s only doing anything for whatever is downstream of that outlet. Not saying it won’t do anything at all, but you’re paying for a fraction of the effect.

I think people way overthink the placement thing. The unit plugs into whatever outlet is convenient and that’s about it. Electricity doesn’t care that your panel is in the garage, it travels through the wires either way. The whole “near the breaker box” thing is probably just their way of saying it works better when it’s closer to where the power enters the house, but I doubt the difference is huge in a normal sized home.

I had mine in a hallway outlet for months and the power bill did what it did. Moved it closer to the panel later when I rearranged some stuff and didn’t notice any dramatic change. Maybe it helped marginally, maybe not. Hard to say without actually tracking it properly over a long time.

If you’re buying it, just plug it in somewhere out of the way and give it a few weeks. If it does anything, it’ll do it regardless of which room you’re in.

I never bothered with the garage. I just plugged mine into an outlet in the hallway near the middle of the house and left it there. No idea if it’s doing more or less than it would near the box, but it was the easiest spot for me. I figured one outlet is as good as another for something like this.

I got one a few months back and I just plugged it into an outlet in my home office because that’s where I spend the most time. My panel is outside, so getting it near the breaker box wasn’t even an option without running a cord across the whole house. Honestly, the way I see it, the thing just needs to be plugged in somewhere that’s on the main circuit and it does its thing.

I can’t tell you if it’s doing more or less because of where it sits, but my electric bill did drop a little after the first month. I doubt the distance matters as much as people think, but if you’re worried, maybe just put it in a room that gets used a lot. That’s what I did and I’m happy with it.

If you already have a smart meter or a newer panel, I don’t think the distance matters as much. My house is older, so I didn’t want to mess around with the garage setup either. I ended up putting mine in the laundry room, just because that outlet was closest to the kitchen and all the big appliances run off that side of the house. I figured that was a decent middle ground. I’m not about to run an extension cord from the garage into my living room just to make it look right. As long as the green light is on, I leave it be. I mainly got it to smooth out the power dips when the fridge kicks on, and it seems to handle that fine from where it sits. Placement probably matters, but not enough to make me rearrange my whole house.
