I used to run a cheap UV bulb on a plug-in timer, and it worked okay but the ClairLite is way easier to just set and leave. Anyone else switch from a dumb timer setup and notice the auto shutoff makes a difference, or is it just me? Not a big deal, just curious if the extra money is worth it for anyone else.

I was the opposite actually. I had a smart plug and thought I was being clever with scheduling, but the ClairLite made me realize I was overcomplicating it. The dumb timer worked fine, but it was always a guessing game with how long to run it and I’d just leave it on the same setting forever.

The auto shutoff on the ClairLite changed my mind about spending extra. I used to think it was just a safety gimmick, but having the lamp cut itself off means I actually move it around more. With the old timer I’d leave it in one spot because resetting it was annoying. Now I just set it and walk away, no thinking involved.

That said, I don’t think the money difference is huge for everyone. If you’re the type who only uses it in one room and never changes things up, a dumb timer gets you 90% there. The convenience is real but it’s not night and day. It’s more about whether you value not having to think about it.

I’ve had mine for a few months now and I’d still pick it over going back, but I wouldn’t tell someone their plug-in timer setup is wrong. Different strokes.

I think the auto shutoff is one of those things that sounds nice on paper but actually matters way more than you expect. That said, I do wonder if I’d feel differently if I only used it in one spot. I move mine around a lot, so having it shut off on its own saves me from my own forgetfulness. If you’re the type who never forgets to unplug things, the cheap route probably works fine.

It’s funny you mention that because I actually almost didn’t buy the ClairLite for that exact reason. I figured my old timer was fine and I didn’t need another gadget. But the auto shutoff is genuinely the thing that sold me once I started using it. I’m the type of person who will set something and then completely forget about it until I smell something weird or hear the click. With the plug-in timer, I’d accidentally leave it on for way longer than I meant to, mostly because I’d set it and then leave the house. Now I just set it and walk away and don’t have to do the mental math of whether I remembered to turn it off. Is it worth the extra money? For me, yeah, mostly because I’m scatterbrained and it removes that whole worry. I still think the dumb timer works for people who are more disciplined than me though.

The price difference is pretty easy to justify for me. I ran mine in the living room after my dog had an accident on the rug, and just being able to set it and walk away without worrying about when to turn it off was the whole selling point. I don’t think I’d go back to the old setup.

I don’t know if the extra money is worth it for everyone, but for me it stopped me from constantly wondering if I left a UV lamp running in an empty room. That alone sold me on it.

The remote is what sold me. I can start it from the hallway and shut the door without stepping back into the room, which is way better than my old plug-in timer that I’d always have to reach around furniture to switch on. The auto shutoff is nice too, but I mainly just like not having to fiddle with it every single time.

The auto shutoff is the main reason I’d pay extra, but not for the safety angle. My dumb timer just clicked on and off at set times, no way to change it without walking over. Being able to run it for 15 minutes and have it kill itself is the only reason I remember to use it at all.

The timer on mine is the part I actually trust less than the dumb plug in. The auto shutoff is nice in theory, but I have had it stop early a couple times, like way before the set time, and I have no idea why. The room still smelled fine after, so maybe it did its job, but it makes me wonder if it was actually running the full cycle or just giving up. My old timer at least clicked on and off exactly when I told it to. I still use the ClairLite, but I do not treat the timer as a guarantee. If I leave the house with it running, I assume it might cut out early and that is probably fine for my use, but it is not some big upgrade over a simple schedule. Different problem, same amount of babysitting.

I actually went the opposite way and got rid of my timer. I just use the remote and turn it off myself when I remember. The auto shutoff is nice but I never really trusted it enough to leave the room for long anyway. I ended up using it way less than I thought I would.
